Well, see, there you are. I told my story and left them to ponder further course of action. Freedom, they got it. I'm all about liberty. By "borrow" do you mean that you intend to use it and then return it?

I believe the balloon animal we have as a health secretary admitted last night he couldn't live on £95 a week and yet it seems millions of self employed and agency workers will be expected to do just that.citizenJA wrote: None of UC's problems have been resolved and money won't be forthcoming any faster. Statutory sick pay remains less than £95 a week. Housing benefit hasn't been increased, the chancellor is confused there. Self-employed people are still up a tree.
I'm also confused by his statement on Housing Benefit, the housing allowance was supposed to cover the cheapest 30% of the local rental market, but it's been frozen since 2016, so is he saying he's going to increase it to meet that 30% of the rental market that exists today? If so, given how much rents have risen since 2016 that would be quite an increase.

I'm off to scrape some kind of pitiful meal together from the scraps I fist fought an old woman for in Tesco car park.
They need to bring Ready Steady Cook back but instead of a price limit just have random ingredients that were left on supermarket shelves.
Let's see what Ainsley Harriott can make with some spring onions, a tin of dog food, a pack of AA batteries and a bottle of organic weedkiller.

I think that Ainsley Harriott always recommends using AAA batteries but, at a pinch, AA will be an acceptable substitute if that's all you have in the cupboard.

From the MoneySavingExpert site.
Local housing allowance has been frozen for several years, so today's announcement means that your local housing allowance will be brought up to whatever 30% of the market rent in your area is.
Re: Friday 20th March 2020
I see now, it was 30% in 2016 but frozen since. It should be quite an increase then, but still pathetic.
Sunak's lucky. Being hailed as a statesman by some on twitter who should know better, but looking like a statesman next to Johnson's not so hard.

Offered me no less than thirty if I wanted! Didn't have time to take them up on it but considering going back in the morning.

Re: Friday 20th March 2020
My last cat was Eric Catona, he was the stupidest cat I've ever owned or lived with, he would walk into things all the time, fall off things, be completely oblivious to the reactions of other cats resulting in multiple scraps where invariably he'd come off the worst, I genuinely think he was a bit slow...and yet he's the only cat I've had who learned to open doors by jumping up and pulling the handle and use a human toilet. And I didn't teach him either of those things.
Perhaps he was a feline savant?
Or maybe I just kept accidentally shutting him in rooms and forgetting to clean his tray.

Re: Friday 20th March 2020
One local council byelection actually held yesterday:
Coventry - Labour hold with slightly over half the vote, a few points up on last year; given the overall turnout was maybe unsurprisingly shockingly low - under 10% - they will likely be happy with that. This ward has been safe for them recently but back in the 2004 all-out elections the LibDems won all three seats, narrowly losing to Labour in 2006 and 2007 but holding on in 2008, before the coalition years saw them crater as in many other places - they finished last in 2018 and since then seem to have given up completely. UKIP polled respectably in their good years and still got a decent third a year ago, their absence now likely helped the Tories advance by over 8 points as runners-up. Greens on 10%, slightly down on last time but an improvement on previous showings, not far ahead of a Socialist Alternative candidate in last place.
Originally five contests were scheduled for next week (including two "double" vacancies) but some have already been called off and the rest will surely follow.
So that is it, until......?

Kirsty Wark on Newsnight pointing out that Tobias Ellwood sounded like a Labour politician.
I listened to an interview earlier this week with a professor of politics (I think from York university?) who was saying that the rise of populism since the 2008 crash has actually frightened even those who took advantage of it and if this time round help wasn't given to ordinary people they fear genuine civil unrest. They are in effect afraid of their own voters. So while it could be true that Tory Mps like Mr Ellwood (and admittedly he's one of the better ones) have taken a lurch to the left as a result of this crisis, it's also possible that they're simply shitting themselves which would be unfortunate given the lack of toilet paper.

Re: Friday 20th March 2020
It depends, because I have a decent landlord and live in a glorified bedsit my rent is currently below the housing allowance limit and he agreed to claim it was above it so I get to keep the difference. To take full advantage of this rise I'll have to persuade him to immediately tell the council he's raised my rent to above the new level which will make him look like a massive profiteering wanker. This may prove difficult.citizenJA wrote:the home someone lives in is the same, the landlord gets the increase is that correct or have I misunderstood?
But for most people if they were using some of their UC, JSA, ESA whatever, to top up the housing allowance to meet the rent then they'll either no longer have to do that or they'll have to contribute less.
So basically unless all landlords decide to be massive profiteering wankers a lot of people are going to be a little better off.
And a little can go a long way when you've got fuck all to begin with.
