I think that Ainsley Harriott always recommends using AAA batteries but, at a pinch, AA will be an acceptable substitute if that's all you have in the cupboard.

We get local farm eggs, various places sell them and they also take a van to the Friday market in Stokesley, this morning they'd sold out by 10.30.

I used to like licking 9 volt batteries to get that electric tongue tingle. Haven't had to use one in years. That's another tingle missing from my life. What they never tell you about getting older is you lose so many good tingles.

My last cat was Eric Catona, he was the stupidest cat I've ever owned or lived with, he would walk into things all the time, fall off things, be completely oblivious to the reactions of other cats resulting in multiple scraps where invariably he'd come off the worst, I genuinely think he was a bit slow...and yet he's the only cat I've had who learned to open doors by jumping up and pulling the handle and use a human toilet. And I didn't teach him either of those things.

Perhaps he was a feline savant?

Or maybe I just kept accidentally shutting him in rooms and forgetting to clean his tray.

One local council byelection actually held yesterday:

Coventry - Labour hold with slightly over half the vote, a few points up on last year; given the overall turnout was maybe unsurprisingly shockingly low - under 10% - they will likely be happy with that. This ward has been safe for them recently but back in the 2004 all-out elections the LibDems won all three seats, narrowly losing to Labour in 2006 and 2007 but holding on in 2008, before the coalition years saw them crater as in many other places - they finished last in 2018 and since then seem to have given up completely. UKIP polled respectably in their good years and still got a decent third a year ago, their absence now likely helped the Tories advance by over 8 points as runners-up. Greens on 10%, slightly down on last time but an improvement on previous showings, not far ahead of a Socialist Alternative candidate in last place.

Originally five contests were scheduled for next week (including two "double" vacancies) but some have already been called off and the rest will surely follow.

So that is it, until......?

I listened to an interview earlier this week with a professor of politics (I think from York university?) who was saying that the rise of populism since the 2008 crash has actually frightened even those who took advantage of it and if this time round help wasn't given to ordinary people they fear genuine civil unrest. They are in effect afraid of their own voters. So while it could be true that Tory Mps like Mr Ellwood (and admittedly he's one of the better ones) have taken a lurch to the left as a result of this crisis, it's also possible that they're simply shitting themselves which would be unfortunate given the lack of toilet paper.

I had Tobias Ellwood down as destined for big things a while back. He was everywhere. Then came Boris Johnson and TE disappeared. Or was made to disappear. He's back in view again, is he? Interesting . . .

It depends, because I have a decent landlord and live in a glorified bedsit my rent is currently below the housing allowance limit and he agreed to claim it was above it so I get to keep the difference. To take full advantage of this rise I'll have to persuade him to immediately tell the council he's raised my rent to above the new level which will make him look like a massive profiteering wanker. This may prove difficult.

But for most people if they were using some of their UC, JSA, ESA whatever, to top up the housing allowance to meet the rent then they'll either no longer have to do that or they'll have to contribute less.

So basically unless all landlords decide to be massive profiteering wankers a lot of people are going to be a little better off.

And a little can go a long way when you've got fuck all to begin with.
