I was thinking this morning that it's quite possible that Rishi Sunak didn't know what the benefit cap was.

Morning all.

Well, shopping was as expected - lots of empty shelves in Sainsburys, most things bought OK plus a few more in M&S which was far more civilised. Quite a few packets of toilet rolls in M&S but absolutely none in Sainsburys.

I see that Brendon O'Fuckwit has written his usual piece of edgy, libertarian, contrarian nonsense..which The Spectator obligingly published.

Veg meat cheese fish market sparsely attended, several with bandit scarves covering mouths.

"Security Distance" lines painted on the tarmac in the town square and also in the nearby cattle market, a meter apart , FAR TOO CLOSE !

Fortunately I had two fivers and a tenner in the house ( in small notes ), and the launderette in town was open, so I bought a €1 packet of soap powder and now have €19 in coins .

it hasn't quite sunk in that the fucking virus can lurk in ambush everywhere, so I adjusted my purchases close to a round figure, and then refused centimes of change .

The supermarket up the hill looked too full , so gave that a miss . Further on the expensive smokehouse shop was empty, so that was much less risky for very classy traditional ham.

I got some salad plants, spuds carrots onions, celeriac&apple for grating, now for some 'gardening' !

Oh, hotels being requisitioned for the homeless ....

That's probably because Trump isn't actually handling anything anymore. The contrast between what he's reading off the autocue and what he's saying off the cuff is growing by the day whereas Johnson's muddled announcements are still tallying depressingly closely to the UK's muddled response.

Good assessment. There are differences between the counties' emergency response infrastructure and political systems. Trump is more or less submitting. The US has more scope for legitimate and responsible leadership filling in. Like from US state governors, for example. US federal emergency response infrastructure is functional and may also provide enough effective leadership Trump can't give. The UK is more vulnerable. The UK is very centrally governed from Westminster.

I'm not saying the US isn't hampered by Trump's irrational presidency. US presidential authority is huge. I mean Trump seems to be signing the orders state governors submit to him. That releases resource reservoirs.

State governors have the authority to requisition necessary supplies during times of crisis.

I've learned a lot about how the EU functions. There are many similarities between the US and the EU as trade, social and political entities.

A lot of pet stores are out of cat litter, yet Amazon appear to have plenty, all at twice the price, of course. If shops can't keep stocks up because the spivs are cleaning them out to make a profit selling them on I think the government will have to intervene.
Or if it's lack of supply that's keeping the shelves bare then again the government has to step in. There are also people who usually eat out who are now also going to have to get stuff from the shops to make at home so it may well get worse before it gets better.
I have to go shopping tomorrow. My husband went last time so I haven't experienced it yet. I hope it's not too bad.

Many thank to you and GetYou for your reminders regarding safely securing and storing provisions and ourselves at home after excursions. When I came home, I left clothes & provisions on the ground in the hall and carefully washed my hands and put other garments on. Using clean rubber gloves, I washed all bags and washable provisions and placed them in quarantine area. Washed rubber gloves, washed hands, washed rubber gloves put them back on, everything worn outside into the washing machine. Washed rubber gloves, washed hands, washed rubber gloves put them back on, things unsuitable for washing were placed in quarantine out of the way for three days before being touched or used. The taps, door handles, cupboards, washing machine, containers of soap and anything else used for these procedures had no contact with potentially contaminated surfaces, were carefully washed, sterilised or placed into quarantine before human contact took place.

Doing my best is all I can do.

I worked for a woman with health difficulties and she had severe allergic reaction to fragrances, certain chemicals and products. The best thing was non-exposure to contamination in the first place. She taught me a lot. While I didn't suffer the reactions she had, she explained so well and I cared for her so much it helped me know how to protect her and myself. Other care workers couldn't work with her. That's not uncommon. Getting the right care worker for people is important.
