I see the daily press conference lineup is very much like the England football team penalty shootout lineup. Both rapidly run out of quality players.

Given this afternoon's hysterical reaction to Lord Sumption, I would imagine people living in an *actual* police state must be thinking "What the bloody hell are you on about?"
There's a nice irony that he is not only a member of a body that libertarians want to abolish, he is also a former member of another body they want to abolish...

The point here is not to criticise the government’s horizon-gazing. It is a simpler point: you just cannot see everything coming. You cannot stockpile in anticipation of every disaster. You cannot hope for a fine-tuned response to everything. You can only plan so far – especially when, as in this case, our understanding of what the disease might do can change so rapidly.
But part of any disaster response planning needs to include some generic idea of resilience – a generalised ability to absorb the unforeseeable. A uniquely British problem is that the way the country has been run for three decades pushes in the opposite direction.
We started this crisis in a weak position.
We have built a fragile state.

from the US Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC)
Asymptomatic and Presymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 Infections in Residents of a Long-Term Care Skilled Nursing Facility — King County, Washington, March 2020
Early Release / March 27, 2020 / 69
What is already known about this topic?
Once SARS-CoV-2 is introduced in a long-term care skilled nursing facility (SNF), rapid transmission can occur.
What is added by this report?
Following identification of a case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a health care worker, 76 of 82 residents of an SNF were tested for SARS-CoV-2; 23 (30.3%) had positive test results, approximately half of whom were asymptomatic or presymptomatic on the day of testing.
What are the implications for public health practice?
Symptom-based screening of SNF residents might fail to identify all SARS-CoV-2 infections. Asymptomatic and presymptomatic SNF residents might contribute to SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Once a facility has confirmed a COVID-19 case, all residents should be cared for using CDC-recommended personal protective equipment (PPE), with considerations for extended use or reuse of PPE as needed.

Sun in an empty room is v nice - thank you. It is also, coincidentally, the exact opposite of my current working environment, which is essentially No sun in a really cluttered room.

Mil Millington.Angry Bed Position Number 2- Think of it as a ‘K’. One person is in the standard half-’X’ shape (facing away) and the other is a rigid ‘I’; lying supine, eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling. Here you lose points for style if the ‘I’ person doesn’t let out frequent sighs and snorts in an attempt to get the Half-’X'-er to ask, ‘Gfff… What is it?’

My work environment is wherever everyone else isn't in the house. That quite often means the living room, trying to work and not fall asleep with a laptop on my lap(top) sitting in an armchair. I have a Y7 class, about half of whom are amazingly keen and a bit needy and I hear from every day (the girl half, basically) and some Y13 groups who have read a headline somewhere saying 'no exams' and so have disappeared, which is a worry, frankly.tinyclanger2 wrote:Sun in an empty room is v nice - thank you.
