Compare and contrast his approach to journalism after leaving Guido Fawkes with Alex Wickham...

We British are known for our common linguistic approaches to certain events. Like 'oh dear' when we we feel it start to rain, or 'oooo, lovely' when somebody gives us a cup of tea and a scone, or 'Goodness, it wasn't a bad dream' when we learn that Priti Patel is actually real.

British prime minister Boris Johnson has thanked NHS staff at St Thomas’ Hospital in central London for saving his life while he underwent treatment in intensive care for coronavirus
So now, immediately, you can say that the broadcast your official Vote Leave campaign put out just before the referendum was an ignorant, spiteful, lying fucking disgrace that you will forever be ashamed of. Those exact words, please.

20 days ago a poll was 55% 'favourable' on our government's management of the crisis, and today that is down to 28% . Just one source, but believable as the news seeps out on care staff medics and more occupations being without masks PPE and testing, then becoming sick and too many dying. And of course there has been much outright lying by the government, a bit of a competition to see which of the French or English has done more of that than the other . Difficult to beat the London mob on that tho.
Yesterday's 'figures' at last included care homes (EHPADs) and showed a decline ...

An excellent timeline of the UK government's special relationship with reality --

I notice the MoS has a full in depth exclusive on "precisely" how ill the PM was.

And halfway down the article it gives the PM's press spokesman's name as James Slack...ah...OK...

And it can only be a matter of time before Dan Hodges starts using Dear Leader to describe the PM.

Not only is this a hilarious and excellent endeavour in and of itself, it's also yet another demonstration of the witlessness of vast swathes of the denizens of twitter who seem more akin to insects immediately responding to basic stimuli than thinking rational beings. Good stuff.

Happy Easter.

Image

I know you're not supposed to roll eggs until Easter Monday but it's supposed to be a bit chilly tomorrow so I did it today. One exploded spectacularly upon impact to mild applause from an onlooking family nearby while the other two made it all the way to the bottom of the hill with only minor damage and were promptly scoffed.

I’ve just downloaded and started to read the whole report.

My initial conclusion. Labour did not deserve to be elected in 2017 or 2019. How could such a divided organisation govern? And Starmer has absolutely got his work cut out to get past this. As the report says there should be healthy disagreement within a party like Labour, but to have senior figures actively working for Labour to lose is beyond contempt IMHO.

PFY - one of (several) reasons why PR is so important for the UK. Labour as it was conceived doesn’t make so much sense now, and our society is such that it will always be divided; but a functional consortium of social democratic, green etc left of center parties could actually get us somewhere. Everyone says the Tories won’t allow it, but you don’t change critical things by accepting the status quo.

There was a referendum on changing the electoral system, albeit to a not very much more proportional one. Then Labour leader Ed Miliband campaigned for change.

Right so nobody is going to say anything nice about my eggs, you're just going to prattle on about boring stuff like self-sabotaging factionalism in the Labour Party like it's anything new.

In 2005 when I was working for the Lib-Dems in Leeds we were getting sent confidential emails on electoral strategy from within the Labour Party, now given this was obviously under Blair I'm willing to bet whoever was feeding us that information (and it was completely accurate) was on the left of the party, we also had quite a number of volunteers and activists defect to us, all from the left of the party. I can clearly remember a conversation I had with one of them, a woman in her thirties who had been a Labour activist since she was a teenager, asking her why she'd joined and what she knew about the party and her response was that she didn't care, all that was important was that Blair lost.

Until someone does something to sort this out it will go on and on ad infinitum, I've never been a member of the Labour Party but it seems to me as an outside observer that this 'broad church' that we hear mentioned so often is built on foundations of bullshit.

And you are right. I'm basically a loyalist. I campaigned for Blair, Brown, Miliband, Corbyn.

The one thing that could make me leave the party is the shocking level of disloyalty we are seeing.

Corbyn was elected leader in the first place because Burnham, Cooper and Kendall were so monumentally uninspiring. Instead of sorting themselves out and presenting some credible policies, the "moderates" turned on the leader who, whatever you think of it, had a proper manifesto. It's not a good look.

Anyhoo, anyone been bingeing on any good TV during this lockdown?

I just finished the first series of 'The Missing' from 2014 on the Iplayer after reading some inexplicably good reviews.

It was just a cheesy bog standard 'kid gone missing' crime drama with all the usual cliches and tropes, the cheese being the most important ingredient as it complimented the enormous slice of ham that is James Nesbitt. It will forever be a mystery to me why directors employ James Nesbitt, he has all the acting chops of a 5 year old trying to look innocent while holding a poo in their hand next to a wall with 'poo' written on it in poo.

So any suggestions for BBC drama's on the IPlayer that don't have James Nesbitt in them would be gratefully received.

Have you seen "The Long Firm" with Mark Strong (came out a long time ago in the 2000 and somethings)? I thought it was great.

BBC - Mother Father Son was good.
Things I’ve watched through various channels of late that were good include:
Shimmer Lake (film)
Uncorked (film)
Bordertown (Finnish TV)
Also Sniffer (Polish TV - or was it Ukrainian?) was good (at least first two series)
