“I don’t believe the polls,” Trump said. “I believe the people of this country are smart. And I don’t think that they will put a man in who’s incompetent.”

I'll leave it at that...

Good morfternoon.

Boris Johnson missed a trick. He could have been shown washing his hands whilst singing (twice) Happy Birthday.

Morning all.
From AS.
A cabinet minister has acknowledged that the government may not meet its target of 100,000 daily coronavirus tests by the end of the month.

After intense criticism, the health secretary, Matt Hancock, pledged the country would be conducting the tests by the end of April but, with only 52,429 carried out in the 24 hours to yesterday, the justice secretary, Robert Buckland, has now conceded it might not happen. He told BBC Breakfast:

Even if it [the target] isn’t met, we’re well on our way to ramping this up and 100,000 is an important milestone, but frankly we need more.

He added: “Yes, 52,000 isn’t 100,000, I know that ... but we are straining every sinew to get there... If he [Hancock] hadn’t set a target he would have been criticised for being unambitious. I think now is the time in respect of this to be bold ... being brave, I think, is something we should acknowledge even if the target isn’t met today.”
Yes, but the issue is that a week or so ago we were being told that the target was around capacity not actual tests.

I thought the last line of that piece needed some more explanation as well...
Just 52,429 tests were carried out in the UK in the 24 hours to yesterday, on 33,455 people.

I just found out yesterday that the Bank Holiday next week is Friday not Monday, for VE day, must have been asleep when they announced it.

Not that it makes much difference in current circumstances.

Doesn't the number of tests include all the re-tests that had to be done (not that they were at any pains to make that clear)?

Are they retesting within 24 hours? They might be. It just sounds odd. Are they doing antigen tests and antibody tests on some people?

Rumours, though they are very much only rumours, that the lockdown could be modestly eased next week.

so, my mum - 86, advanced bone cancer - blood condition. isolated at home, but out for blood transfusions every 2 to 3 weeks, had a fall - we think might have been 24 hrs before my sister gave up calling
and broke isolation found her collapsed.
Taken off by ambulance ( we can't see her ) was on a drip and sounding better after a day in hospital. had a text from her - at four in the morning a bunch of masked people burst into her room and in her words ' kidnapped her'. She's now in a covid ward. Her test was positive. They think she might have picked it up when she had her last blood transfusion...

Sister and family now in proper 'Lockdown'.

Best wishes for your mum, Lost Soul. Fingers crossed she only gets minor symptoms.

This has always been the problem with the "shielding the vulnerable" idea. It's just not feasible to put millions of vulnerable people into the equivalent of a plastic bubble so there will always be the possibility of infection and that possibility will always be greater where the outbreak is bigger and has spread further.

Yes if "shielding the vulnerable" was a magic bullet at least some countries would have managed it successfully.

Johnson's elements of medical speech today
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/prim ... april-2020" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
"We have come through the peak
Or rather we’ve come under what could have been a vast peak
as though we’ve been going through some huge alpine tunnel
And we can now see the sunlight and pasture ahead of us
And so it is vital that we do not now lose control and run slap into a second and even bigger mountain"
- Johnson

One of those things that is just so jaw-droppingly stupid, so ignorant and so wilfully almost spiteful, that we should remember.
The mounting criticism has been accompanied by an old quote from Mr Johnson from 2006, in which he said that the fictional Mayor Vaughn from the Stephen Spielberg movie Jaws was a 'hero'.

An MP at the time, Mr Johnson told an audience at Lloyd's in London that "The real hero of Jaws is the mayor".

"A gigantic fish is eating all your constituents and he decides to keep the beaches open.

"OK, in that instance he was actually wrong. But in principle, we need more politicians like the mayor-- we are often the only obstacle against all the nonsense which is really a massive conspiracy against the taxpayer".
Quoted in this story from The Irish Times in March this year.

Johnson today says “many people will be looking at our apparent success”.

It's obvious - nobody reading this here doesn't know this already (although if we let that stop us it would be even quieter) - but South Korea recorded its first cases and deaths at around the same time as us. It's a country with a smaller population - a bit over 50million- but in a more densely populated space. South Korea went straight to work testing, tracing and isolating, and threw the state and private sector into each other to work on medical tech for the outbreak.

South Korea as of now - no new cases today, which is a first, and from the figures I can see (and I know this are all not strictly comparable and all might change a little) in total 10,765 cases and 247 deaths.

Us - the UK - as of today, 4,076 new cases today, in total 171,253 cases and 26,711 deaths (using the same source as the SK numbers - http://www.worldomitors.info" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

We've tested about a tenth as many people as South Korea. We haven't done anything significant about contact tracing or isolation.

Many people will be looking at our apparent success.

(note to self- if you're going to call somebody 'stupid', don't misspell 'stupid') (At least I can spell 'misspell)
