Morning!

And yes, I am about and just noticed Nadine Dorries trending which is never a good sign.

About this apparently:

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Three Tory MPs retweet a doctored video from a far-right source.

Lucy Allen too.

I do like clever-clever judges, sometimes.
A US judge has signalled reluctance to allow the Department of Justice to drop its criminal prosecution of Michael Flynn, tasking a retired judge with advising on whether the former Trump administration official should face an additional criminal contempt charge for perjury.

Sullivan said he was seeking Gleeson’s recommendation on whether Flynn should face a criminal contempt charge for perjury because he testified under oath that he was guilty of lying to the FBI but then reversed course and said he had never lied.

Lucy Allan has deleted the offending tweet, but (unlike the others) is still trying to justify it.

The local press here have so far decided it's not news at all. Unlike yesterday, when they ran two different stories saying 'PM attacks Starmer for misquoting government advice' but no stories saying 'Starmer didn' misquote government advice, Johnson did, and has yet to apologise for lying to the house'.

hey ho.

You all know I didn't grow up in the UK and that I don't watch much television or listen to radio.
I just heard the voice of someone in the UK I know through their written work and I'm startled Keir Starmer doesn't sound like Gregory Peck.

Yeah, that's a good message from Starmer. My single recommendation is getting in touch with an inner Patrick Stewart, for example, for maximum verbal communication effectiveness.

hey ho.
There are some purported "local news" sites that have actually been set up by the Tories as overt propaganda outlets.

And others that just appear they were created that way.......

UK's privately run PPE stockpile was in chaos, sources say

The private firm contracted to run the government’s stockpile of personal protective equipment (PPE) was beset by “chaos” at its warehouse that may have resulted in delays in deploying vital supplies to healthcare workers, according to sources who have spoken to the Guardian and ITV News.

The allegations from delivery drivers and other well–placed sources raise questions about whether Movianto, the subsidiary of a US healthcare giant, was able to adequately manage and distribute the nation’s emergency stockpile of PPE for use in a pandemic. (Guardian)

Edited to add -

Subsidiary of which US healthcare giant? So far, I've been unable to find out.

Owens and Minor, a company based in Virginia, looks like the parent company of Movianto. They're referred to on Wiki as a healthcare logistics company so it's actually a bit puzzling why they would struggle with the logistics of pandemic stockpile distribution. It seems to be what they do.

Edited to add "was" the parent company. Movianto has since been sold to EHDH, a French company too small for a Wiki page. I'm only guessing but I'm wondering if the government may have been better off renewing the contract with DHL rather than giving it to a loss-making company in constant transfer between owners. Just a thought.

Coronavirus: A government under great strain

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-52670086" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And however the decisions are actually being made, the government is still scrambling, two months in, to fix problems that were there from the start: grappling with care homes, providing enough testing, and enough protective gear.

Some of that, the UK has in common with other governments around the world.

But insiders identify the patchwork of structures that govern health and social care too.

"It's a mess," says one minister. ''The system simply wasn't ready to deal with what we have got," says a senior official.

There's now an obvious urge in Number 10 to change in order to cope, bringing in more outside experts, with government documents this week arguing for a "rapid re-engineering of government's structures".
Two things.

1. Andrew Lansley
2.The White Paper on social care that got delayed. And delayed. And delayed.

Chickens coming home to roost...

It's so tough on a government. People getting sick during a pandemic requiring a responsible leadership response.

‘bringing in more outside experts’

God help us.

It’s their default solution to any problem and it’s been working really, really well. Not.
