Tee hee.

Well isn't this wonderful.

Dangle some bait, wait and watch as Cummings and the Tories take it, then reel them in.

How utterly delightful.

And the fact it's the Guardian and Mirror that have duped them so masterfully makes it all the sweeter.

This is really going to piss them off.

Cummings second trip to Durham and the tories making total arses of themselves is all over the Mail and Telegraph but as of now the BBC are studiously ignoring it.

Perhaps they're giving Laura Kuenssberg time to come up with something that will explain it all away.

Clones perhaps?

Or freak atmospheric conditions causing a Cummings mirage?

The longer they drag this out the worse it's going to get. Outside the cabinet and the hardcore brexiters what's been striking is how little support Cummings has had and the amount of fury and mockery those defending him have faced. If he stays in his post he'll be a gift that keeps on giving. Because it isn't just that he broke the rules, twice, it's his entire 'fuck you' attitude. That he's better than the rest of us. Sneering and disdainful in the face of a public which has sacrificed months of familial and social contact. He's taking the piss. Not playing fair. And at a time like this that's not going to go down at all well.

“” My husband did rush home to look after me, he’s an extremely kind man whatever people assume to the contrary.

Commenting on her husband, pictured, Ms Wakefield said: ‘My husband did rush home to look after me, he’s an extremely kind man whatever people assume to the contrary’

‘But 24 hours later he said “I feel weird” and collapsed. I felt breathless, sometimes achy, but Dom couldn’t get out of bed.

‘Day in day out for ten days he had a high fever, with spasms that made the muscles lump and twitch in his legs.

‘He could breathe but only in a limited shallow way. After a week we reached peak corona uncertainty, day six is a turning point I was told, when you either get better or head for ICU. Was Dom fighting off the bug or was he heading for a ventilator, who knew?

‘I sat on his bed staring at his chest trying to count his breaths per minute. The little oxygen reader we’d bought on Amazon indicated he should be in hospital, but his lips weren’t blue and he could talk in full sentences. “”

Steve Baker:

So it is hardly surprising when mums and dads were going without the childcare provided by their parents – perhaps while they were isolating for 7 and 14 days with COVID19 symptoms – that Dominic was suiting himself with a long drive, presumably with stops, to get help during his illness. After all, he said we should vote for the original Withdrawal Agreement without reading it, on the basis Michael Gove articulated: we could change it later. But now with him in power, we are putting in a modest border in the Irish Sea.
(whole thing worth a read, well bits of it)

Shapps reiterates that the guidance allowed for arrangements such as the one Cummings made, and that he does not think he needs to resign.
Says it is important to “remain locked down, particularly if you have the symptoms”.
So 'remain locked down' and 'you can't go and visit any of your family in their homes and can only meet one of them at a time in public if you maintain social distancing' actually means 'if you and your partner are infected you can travel hundreds of miles in a car with your child so your child can then be cared for by your vulnerable elderly relatives - the guidance allows for arrangements like this'.

I'm sorry, I know this is obvious. I would have accepted 'screw you, we have a majority of 80, we can do whatever we want to do, the rules are for you not for us'. This, though, is a whole different kind of contempt.

22 days of dither and delay on coronavirus that cost thousands of British lives

Scientists, politicians, academics and advisers reveal the inside story of ministers’ desperate battle with the virus before the country finally locked down
“” There is a simple mathematical truth that would have caused alarm about the coronavirus pandemic if it had been more fully appreciated when it was first flagged up in reports from China in late January. The number of people infected appeared to double in as little as three days. The maths was remorseless. It meant one case would become eight in nine days, and after 21 it would be 128. In less than nine weeks, one case could infect a million people.

So time was already running out for Britain when, amid the last of the late February storms, Boris Johnson returned from his working holiday at the state-owned Chevening residence to face opposition accusations that he was a “part-time” prime minister.

On Monday, March … “”

Ok. Here’s my prediction. Cummings will be ceremonially sacked.

But he will carry on working for Gove behind the scenes with even less transparency & less accountability.

There is far bigger more consequential play going on here & Cummings is at the heart of it:

Carole Cadwalladr
@carolecadwalla
Why does the Cummings story matter? And what does it obscure? The real story is the huge transfer of government assets to private companies that he is overseeing under cover of a pandemic while restructuring the Cabinet Office into his & @michaelgove's private fiefdom
