Afternoon all.

I note from the DT that Terry Dicks MP has died.

No great loss - the man was an utter shit.

Tony Banks was right when he said that Dicks was "living proof that a pig's bladder on a stick can get elected to Parliament."

Incidentally I do miss Tony Banks.

My parents who were life-long Conservatives were utterly charmed by him when he came to my dad's aunts' 100th birthday party. They came home raving about what a nice chap he was!

"Boris Johnson was incorrect" would have sufficed and could be used on practically every occasion you care to name.

Banks was not just a very funny man but quite a smart politician. And that quip about Dicks will resonate for all time 8-)

Dicks wiki page is quite something - 14 years in the Commons and all that can be said is the bile that he came out with.

Ah yes, that comment on Farzad Bazoft - what a nice man he was. I also remember fellow right-wing joker Anthony Beaumont-Dark "revealing" that FB had copped a shoplifting charge years earlier, as if that somehow justified him being tortured and "executed" by Saddam's regime.

If nothing else, a reminder that godawful Tory backbench MPs aren't anything new.

I'm a big fan of Tony Banks too.

As a complete by the way, I was reading Slaughterhouse Five again recently and came across something I'd never noticed before. Vonnegut has a lot to say about the severity of the raid on Dresden, very understandably and very properly, but when the point comes where characters talk about how they've put the history of what actually happened together, the book they quote from is 'The Destruction of Dresden' by David Irving. S5 was published in 1969 and Irving wasn't a 'household nazi name' by then but his views certainly weren't unknown. I have quite a few collections of Vonneguts odds and sods and I might have a hunt to see if ever said anything about this - I can't recall it.

Been out for a friend's birthday in the woods. A certain dickhead invited his recent ex-girlfriend who actually showed up and caused a considerable scene. But eventually they all fucked off and we lay in the grass watching bats while reminiscing.

Now I need food.

God, Nick Cohen's column on how the RCP/Spiked crew prove that the far left are just like the far right. You know you do have to consider the possibility that when this lot were the RCP they were fucking idiots, and now they're Spiked they're still fucking idiots. The big thing they've always had in common with what Johnson's tory party is now like is their fucking idiocy.

To be clear a 'friend' of ours invited my friend's ex just to be a dick and spoil the whole affair, she's smart and cool a script writer who wrote for Coronation Street and Emmerdale before it burned her out and she ended up medicated. This 'friend' kept plying her with vodka and eventually the shit hit the fan.

I have little to do with these people mostly, they're all script writers, last time I got involved a bloke who wrote for Doctors threw a slice of pizza in my face.

I'm not sure this band ever existed. There's a lot of 'lost tapes' when it comes to 70's electronica and I suspect this is a fake.

It's a good one though.

Morning all.

This is amazing. At points throughout the thread you have to remind yourself that he is actually a sitting MP of a government with an 80 seat majority.

It's a bit difficult understanding what he's so upset about. Six years fighting the second world war followed by decades of building greater European unity has brainwashed us all into being anti-Fascist? Or what, exactly? Too much education has made it harder to hide the abuse of power and corruption in the top echelons from the voting public? Or the fact that those who have read "1984" are a bit sceptical about what they're told by a billionaire owned, right-wing press and refuse to play along?

I do love that he completely misses the choice of using a left-wing government to illustrate universal truths about power that applies equally to both sides of the political spectrum. A clever ruse by Orwell which has enabled his political fables to dodge censorship over the years, with Animal Farm escaping the Govian axe that fell on Steinbeck and still teaching GCSE students that power corrupts to this day!

I'm quite taken with this. Being sniffed by a dog feels friendlier and less intrusive than having your temperature taken, and potentially far more accurate, too:

Including Emily Oldknow, I believe.

Edited to add a "?" . I think I read that but not sure where. Anyway, very much looks like a "by the book" investigation.

Missing HindleA
We'd routinely contact each other after a month or so, picking up after where we'd left off
It's like a physical blow remembering he's gone

Tory governments since May 2010, his party, he's part of that government now
What's his problem?
