Morning all.

We appear to have some spam around...

And this...

As Jonathan Simons said "Good luck with that..."

English universities are in peril because of 10 years of calamitous reform

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... -education

Quote:
Then there is the rather less obvious contradiction between consumerism and education. Our higher education system is at present structurally consumerist. Even now, it is not widely understood how revolutionary were the changes introduced in 2010-12 by the coalition government in England and Wales (Scotland wisely followed another course). It wasn’t simply a “rise in fees”. It was a redefinition of universities in terms of a market model. The Office for Students is explicitly a “consumer watchdog”. Consumers are defined by their wants; in exchange for payment they are “entitled” to get what they ask for.

Yes, that bit is quite important I feel.

Johnson’s quest for a spokesperson goes on – but who'd want the job?

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... -wants-job

Quote:
Another former No 10 aide pointed out that whoever takes the job will be closing the door on a traditional journalistic career for good – and that unlike in the US, where lucrative pundit roles on CNN and Fox are on offer for former White House advisers, the next career steps for whoever does it are not obvious.

“You can become a pundit, but you don’t get that big-shot deal,” the former aide said. “Given the high turnover of staff in the current administration, you’re taking a risk. You potentially become more famous than a lot of cabinet ministers, but you leave yourself incredibly exposed. You only have to look at Sean Spicer” – Donald Trump’s notorious first press secretary, who found himself an object of ridicule for his misleading briefings and wound up on Dancing with the Stars in a neon green ruffled shirt.

Quite.

Incidentally, is anyone keeping count of the people at the so-called centre left broadcasters & newspapers who went to work for the Tories?

Hard to believe the BBC now doesn't have the worst of both worlds. Its generally "woke" culture continues to enrage right wingers, but its coverage of politics and current affairs has alienated many of the left leaning people who would normally stand up for it against such attacks.

Not sure - 100k isn't really that much these days in a high profile media job and, as it said, you'd never be able to go back again to a position where you're supposed to be politically neutral which is why I don't think any they'll come from a major broadcaster.

Something that Labour and the unions were calling for only earlier today.
