Morning !
Yesterday on WATO Fintan O'Toole pointed out how the brexiteers' purported aim of reducing 'EU bureaucracy' has resulted in repatriating and recreating swathes of really boring stuff that the EU had been doing . New jobs for 50,000 as customs-related bureaucracy an example, plus of course we have the odd few £100mns of border infrastructure.
On their , or rather his, way to achieving control of er everything, Cummings' Mission Control is centralising all data , supposedly to provide better service to the people , but also a system of control worthy of the Stasi ---
An August Cabinet Office press release, largely disregarded by the media, suggested the department is trying to codify the sharing of data across Government. Currently, departments have little access to each other’s data, though that seems set to change.

“Data standards create a consistent way to record and share data within government. These standards will improve services for citizens by allowing departments access to high quality data quickly,” the press release claims.

The greater accessibility of data might be designed to improve Government services, but some worry it will be used for nefarious ends. Discussing the development of this system, a source with inside knowledge of the Cummings operation told Byline Times: “I still believe the civil servants I worked with were altruistic but also naïve to the potential abuse.”
https://bylinetimes.com/2020/09/04/they ... -cummings/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
There are obvious advantages to a more joined-up administration, if only it were for the people rather than against them ...

Thank you.

I see that 'algorithm' is the new buzz word for 'something we don't fully understand and which gives dodgy results'.

It’s great the government’s reforming planning laws.

But the reforms need to work for London.

As I told
@thetimes
, overcrowded suburbs aren’t the answer. Yet that’s what the algorithm would deliver.

Any reforms need to make family life in London easier.

A senior Tory MP is concerned about Johnson's performance against Starmer. No concern expressed about the ramifications of having an incompetent UK PM during a pandemic. Peoples' lives are on the line and Tories are more worried about their bad publicity.

Desperate times call for desperate measures...

Desperate Boris Johnson to step up personal attacks on Keir Starmer

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... ir-starmer" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Johnson attempted to turn the tables, suddenly suggesting the Labour leader had somehow been sympathetic to the IRA because he had worked under Jeremy Corbyn. “This is a leader of the opposition who supported an IRA-condoning politician,” said Johnson, to the bemusement of MPs on all sides of the house.

An angry Starmer pointed out he had in fact spent five years of his legal career prosecuting IRA terrorists and working with the intelligence services to bring terrorists to justice. Despite Hoyle’s request for Johnson to apologise he refused to do so.

A Labour source said: “If Boris Johnson wants to have a debate with Keir about past careers then bring it on. While Keir was a human rights lawyer or director of public prosecutions Johnson was being sacked for lying.
Quite - not sure he really wants to go down that road given one of the sackings was about his personal life...

Covid-19 ‘could be endemic in deprived parts of England’
“If we accept the premise that in some areas the infection is now endemic – how does this change our strategy? If these areas were not able to attain near zero-Covid status during full lockdown, how realistic is it that we can expect current restriction escalations to work?”
Gabriel Scally, visiting professor of public health at the University of Bristol and a member of the independent Sage committee, described the findings of the leaked report as “extremely alarming” after being shown them by the Observer.

“The only way forward is to build a system which provides much better, more locally tailored responses,” Scally said. “There is no integrated find, test, trace, isolate and support system at the moment. The data on housing is extraordinarily important. Overcrowded households are part of public health history. Housing conditions are so important and always have been, whether it was for cholera or tuberculosis or Covid-19.

“Doing something about housing conditions for someone who has an active infection is extremely important and it is not something that can be handled by a call centre run by a commercial company hundreds of miles away.”

Just reading some of that article I posted, it might be a huge irony that Johnson appointed a Conservative PM whose party chucked him after just two years...and the same fate might well be waiting for the PM himself.

I don't always agree with Extinction Rebellion or their methods. But peaceful direct action is a perfectly legitimate means of protest. Shutting down production of some newspapers for one day is not an assault on democracy or the British people on the scale of No Deal Brexit.
Quite.

And it;s interesting to see the usual suspects complaining about this assault on democracy from the comfort of the internet where, I am told, it is possible to get some news stories as well as from printed editions which, I thought, everyone had been saying were dying...

Well, thought this place had been shut down until that was posted :)

As with probably most others here, am old enough to recall when newspapers were prevented from appearing for weeks or even months at a time due to industrial action. Even so, I don't recall all this ridiculously disproportionate "ASSAULT ON OUR FREE PRESS!!!!!" caterwauling back then.

Leeds records almost 100 new coronavirus cases

https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/news/leeds ... w-18888743

That's more than Bradford. It seems inevitable this city is heading for some kind of lockdown, yet today once again half the people in Tesco weren't wearing masks. And once again the main culprits by a considerable margin were black and Asian women. I simply can't fathom it. For the second time recently I saw a group of black ladies standing in the middle of the shop having a chat all without masks. They were clearly all local, I could tell by the accents so no language difficulties or anything like that, just sheer stupidity. Asian women with kids with masks on but not wearing one themselves, what the fuck? It's baffling. And I didn't even go into my local 'Continental Superstore' where i get herbs and spices, took one look through the door and thought 'nope'.

Last weekend I was upset and angry when I witnessed the black community round here being harassed and terrorised by a massive police overreaction to the fear of house parties while a packed white middle class house party went on completely unmolested up the road.

And I think you all know me well enough to realise I'm no racist scumbag.

But I'm not going to shy away from the truth as I see it day in day out and that is that the BAME communities here are letting themselves down and if the council want to get on top of this ever increasing infection rate it's something that's going to have to be addressed.

Hmmm...who'd have thought dumping masses of excess energy into a system could cause it to behave erratically.

Just looking at that forecast it looks like the entire South West coast of the U.S is near uninhabitable without air conditioning and the air conditioning is making things worse as it eats so much power. So I can see that ending well.

Ok so we're going to head off into the big wide world by ourselves reliant on deals, treaties and obligations with other countries and trade blocs while ripping up the deals, treaties and obligations we've already signed?

Exactly how is making the UK a pariah state contemptuous of international law supposed to help?

Are we all to become pirates, replace the Union Jack with the Jolly Roger and sail the UK round the Indies in search of booty?

I don't remember 'you might die of scurvy' being on the side of a bus.
