Morning all.

David Vance finally booted off Twitter and slunk off to Parler with all the rest of the nasty little racists.

Good way to start the day...how on earth he, who'd never been anything of any note whatsoever, managed to get a blue tick is beyond all comprehension

Isn't a blue tick just a confirmation that you are who you say you are? IIRC it started to distinguish "real" people in the public eye from (often convincing) parody accounts.

Agree on the more general point, it goes without saying :)

Conservative minister Jacob Rees-Mogg is self-isolating at home after one of his children showed symptoms of coronavirus.
He said the child had been tested for the virus and the family was isolating while they waited for the test result.

Nice to see you in the hours of daylight PF.

The old 'alternative arrangements' for the Irish Border, you're thinking?
We need some real technology for the borders with the EU on 1 Jan and they've barely started on it.

It made me think about how, every time the existing testing system fails to meet its target, they come up with an even bigger and more unlikely one.
Taking time to ensure it works is apparently unthinkable.

Statement by Michel Barnier following Round 8 of negotiations for a new partnership between the European Union and the United Kingdom
https://ec.europa.eu/commission/pressco ... nt_20_1612" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The EU remains committed to an ambitious future partnership with the UK. This would clearly be to the benefit of both sides. Nobody should underestimate the practical, economic and social consequences of a “no deal” scenario.
---
To conclude a future partnership, mutual trust and confidence are and will be necessary. The Chief Negotiators and their teams will remain in contact over the coming days. At the same time, the EU is intensifying its preparedness work to be ready for all scenarios on 1 January 2021.
I recommend reading the whole thing. It's sensible and rational, unlike Johnson's government.

The contention appears to be that because the UK’s internal constitutional arrangements allow Parliament, as a matter of *domestic* law, validly to enact any *domestic* law, this somehow makes it acceptable for the UK to breach *international* law. That is a non sequitur. /4
---
The Government’s argument is that Parliament’s legal capacity in domestic law to make any law it wants somehow makes it acceptable, as a matter of international law, for the UK to renege on its treaty obligations. But the latter does not follow from the former. /7

Contrary to the Government’s position, the UK, like every other State, is required in international law to abide by its treaty obligations. Neither parliamentary sovereignty nor the notion of dualism is any answer to that point. /8

The UK may have left the EU, but it has not left the community of nations or the rules-based international order. Treaty obligations are binding upon the UK, and to suggest that they are not ‘because Parliament is sovereign’ is as embarrassing as it is dangerous. /ends

I'm stunned.
I understand there's a percentage of the population who'll like this, the Tory voters will like this, many of them.
That don't cut no wise with other sovereign nations.
I don't think government are concerned about the people who'll be at the sharp end of justifiable sanctions in response to government's illegal manoeuvres.

Hancock began by repeating all the stuff about the “rule of six” that he and Johnson had already told everyone several times already and, for the most part, he was heard with polite boredom. It was when he got on to Operation Moonshot that open laughter could be heard from both sides of the chamber.

The numbers are a bit dramatic. For example, with rapid tests that are available at the moment, you probably can do no more than about 100 a day. So if he’s aiming for 10m a day, that’s quite a target to aim for.
Allan Wilson, president of the Institute of Biomedical Science.
Mass screening always seems like a good idea. But the huge danger is false positives ... if you are going to have a test that would allow someone into a theatre, or allow them back to work, you have to be really sure they are not infectious. So you have to set a threshold that is not very sensitive, that would pick up anything that hints at being infectious. That means that such a test will always generate a very large number of false positives. if you only have 1% false positives among all the people who are not infectious, and you are testing the whole country, that’s 600,000 people unnecessarily labelled as positive ...
