Truck queues could be 7,000 long when Brexit transition ends, ministers warn
UK ministers have warned of 7,000-truck-long queues in Kent after the Brexit transition period ends as a worst-case scenario if hauliers fail to prepare for changes to customs rules. ... The Road Haulage Association (RHA), meanwhile, said its meeting on Thursday with Gove had fallen “far short of our expectations”.
Responding to the worst-case scenario document, the RHA chief executive, Richard Burnett, said: “We’ve been consistently warning the government there will be delays at ports but they’re just not engaging with industry on coming up with solutions.
Less than 100 days to go and the RHA advice on their website is still 'you are definitely going to have a lot more administration and costs but nobody knows what's actually going to be involved'. The worst case scenario, which we seem to be barrelling towards, involves losing rights for about 95% of our current commercial journeys into EU nations or others that we have deals with through EU membership (which means because of transition at the moment).

I think 7000 trucks would equal a queue about 140km long (if it's very efficiently organised). That would take it to Slough, Stevenage or Cambridge ish. And completely close the M25, obviously.

The idea that the pandemic will provide cover for no-deal Brexit was always stupid, how are people not going to notice that the roads have ground to a halt and there's no food on the shelves?

It's quite possible that they're using it for that purpose though, why say the restrictions would be likely to go on for 6 months and suggest that the army might be used otherwise? Making sure they can keep us off the streets in January.

I still think there is going to be some sort of deal at the year's end, though its almost certainly going to be sticking plaster stuff now.

Um......I'm not even sure where to start with this. Unbelievable.

Afternoon all.

It would appear that the National Trust have a new marketing angle - "Now even less chance that you'll bump into Anne Widdecombe"
Otto English
@Otto_English
Anne Widdecombe has cancelled her National Trust membership because they chose to tell the truth about slavery and British history and educate people - as is their remit. That Ms Widdecombe would rather she and we wallow in blind faith and ignorance says it all. Ludicrous person.

NEW Gove confirms a de facto internal border in Kent - rephrasing previous tweet (this is something transport industry been v worried about)

Truckers will have to have a "Kent Access Permit" to get into the county says Gove. It will use police and ANPR to enforce

This Kent Access Permit will be issued once trucker has completed their paperwork.

But sources in industry say it is impossible to implement unless police patrol the Kent border. They have asked govt to explain this. This is first time govt has said police will be used

It won't - as it should - be "Ah, it would appear that there are a fair number of issues to which we gave absolutely no thought whatsoever before telling everyone about the bright sunny uplands"

It'll be "This is the wrong kind of Brexit."

And guess what?

Gibraltar have decided they would rather like to stay in the single market...and have effectively erected a border with the UK.

The UK has recorded 6,178 new coronavirus cases, according to today’s daily update to the coronavirus dashboard. That is a big increase on yesterday’s figure (4,926) and close to the highest daily figure ever recorded (6,201 on 1 May).
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/li ... 22f19d2e33" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The daily dashboard shows the UK has also recorded 37 new coronavirus deaths. This is highest daily recorded total since mid July, and it takes the headline total to 41,862. But this figure only covers people who have died within 28 days of testing positive. The total number of people in the UK who have died from confirmed or suspected coronavirus is more than 57,600.
