As I was reading the contributions to this article about whether black history ought to be in the National Curriculum separately I had this dread feeling about who was coming up next...

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2 ... are_btn_tw

Calvin Robinson, education consultant, former teacher and campaigner for Don’t Divide Us

Ah yes, the former IT teacher turned activist....

David Olusoga makes, as you would expect, some excellent points about focusing on US history at the expense of our own - even though the events are largely within the same timeframe. I wonder whether, as it is within people's living memory, it's a bit too raw, too embarrassing to admit that life was like that for Black Britons?

When you've been in power for ten years- even if you believed the spurious excuse in the first place- it wears a bit thin.

IIRC the last sighting of "the previous Labour government" in Tory apologia post-1979 didn't come until circa 1995.

UK Covid testing cutoff quietly extended to eight days after first signs

Exclusive: confusion as helpline staff say tests not accurate after more than five days

Staff reacted with surprise and bemusement to the change on Friday. The reason behind the move was unclear, but there will be suggestions that it is intended to help manage stretched capacity. To control the spread of coronavirus, it is vital that potential carriers are identified as swiftly as possible after exhibiting symptoms. (Guardian)

A spokesperson for the UK’s Department of Health and Social Care has told the Guardian that the government currently does not know exactly how many new infections were recorded in the past 24 hours.

They said “some new data” would be published over the next couple of days, “but currently, we do not have a breakdown showing which cases are from today and which from a previous period”.

A technical issue resulting in conflated old and new test results was blamed, and the spokesperson said this would affect reported cases for a number of days.

We are drifting towards the possibility of the confirmation of Barrett by the Senate being very tight. If the two Republicans who say they won't vote to confirm - Collins and Murkowski - hold their ground, and if the vote gets pushed back beyond November 3rd (which seems quite possible at the moment) then it's currently very likely the Democrats will have one gain in the Senate - there is a 'Special' election in Arizona as well as the regular election to fill the seat from now till 'handover' in January. At the moment it's held by an appointed Republican but it looks like the democrat contender may well win. That would put things at 50/50, which is still enough for Barrett because Pence would have the casting vote. If Republican senators appear to be actually getting ill and staying ill for any time, look for a sudden backtrack on proxy voting.

It would indeed be ironic if the virus quite a few Trump supporters deny even exists, was to stymie his plans for the Supreme Court.

There's a great deal of not being able to tell what might be true through the fog of, at best, misinformation and contradiction (as Robet Harris has said about the UK, we are all being led by oxymorons).

But it would be a very big lie indeed to say that he'd tested positive if he hasn't, and if he has then the big issue is how he is later this week rather than how he is now. That's the point where, assuming he is infected, we'll get an idea whether it's likely to pass over him or be a big deal.

Fearless common sense? What if it's common sense to be fearful?

On the upside, my knowledge of Geography has been greatly enhanced thanks to Boris Johnson who took the trouble to explain, yesterday (in the context of "Brexit"), that Canada is a big country a long way away.

The real impact is on Test and Trace. None of these positive cases have been contact traced - they're now dealing with an epic backlog

And that's actually an impact for everyone. 15k people untraced (and by now it's probably too late)... not good for containing the outbreak

Not a fan of Freedland generally but yesterday's piece was more to the point than even he can have expected.

This government's incompetence is no accident. It was inevitable

Quote:
Out would go the elitist experts – who, as Cummings’ first patron, Michael Gove, memorably remarked, the country had had enough of – and in would come a gang of anarchistic tech-wizards armed with supercomputers and reams of data.

Yeah, and they're now proving that they can't even handle the data properly.

The locating of thousands more misplaced test results have pushed Liverpool’s infection rate to over 400 per 100,000 - a staggering and really scary number for a city with some of the worst historic health issues that make fighting this virus so much harder

The most charitable explanation for this is that they are utterly incompetent. The more plausible explanation is that they are utterly incompetent *and* they just don't care.

Trump going for a drive by to wave at his supporters outside the hospital means Trump ordering his driver and secret service agents to sit inside a hermitially sealed very close environment with him whilst he's infected. Let's hope he's lying about being ill.
