What is bringing measures in England and Spain close to collapse, is battles between central and regional government over control of public health measures that confuse the public, stoke ideological polarisation and build on pre-existing regional resentments.

Morning all.

In education news, I'm shocked, shocked that a publicity-hungry headteacher who had the full weight of the DfE behind her when she opened her school and who comes out with wide sweeping generalizations about those "other schools" which simply aren't good enough should be awarded an honour!

Incidentally, she was still recently claiming that the system was "broken" - she's never once to my knowledge said what she means by this.

Burnham sounding very impatient with the government now. People shouldn't forget health was his speciality when an MP.

I used to see Bill Esterson on the Edu Select Committee where he was excellent.

And this thread is basically a tale of corruption.

1) A thread

A tale of two PPE suppliers.

The company set up on 12 May 2020 by an associate of a Conservative Peer.

The family business in Knowsley, with over 50 years proven track record.

One was given a contract for £122 million.

The other was given the run around.
Public Accounts Committee and National Audit Office need to be all over this stuff.

The gov't's advice: "You should work from home."

The gov't London mayoral candidate's advice: "You should get back to the office."

This is why the UK manages to combine disastrous health
AND economic results; a totally amateurish, comically deadly, lack of message discipline.

Well I've broken the law again.

Andy Burnham used the football analogy of the government 'losing the dressing room' in the North.

Which doesn't even begin to describe it.

During the initial proper lockdown I'd never have visited my friend as I've done tonight, but now it doesn't even warrant a second thought, we're not idiots, we've certainly not been shaking hands with Covid 19 patients, and he even made me wash my cans in the kitchen sink.

Any notion of collective responsibility is gone, replaced by trust in your friends and family.

Which would be a Tory dream if they weren't the ones trying to enforce all this shit.

And I mean what's the point? Here in Leeds it's totally out of hand and yet on my way home I was passed by taxi after taxi full of people.

People who had been to pubs and restaurants and yet they don't want me to visit a friend?

Fuck off.

I understand exponential growth but what I don't understand is why they are doing neither one thing or the other.

Either lock us down completely or don't fucking bother.

Because this isn't the U.S.

You can try to deflect the blame with your culture war bullshit but our culture is completely different, we don't have militias supported by the local police chief, and we don't have a notion of manifest destiny.

We are a country where anyone fucking with Radio 4 would be in deep shit.

I have no idea what it means to be English, or indeed Scottish, but one thing's for sure if you want to piss people off messing with Radio 4 would be the way to go about it.

Hospital bosses urge NHS England to drop 'unfair' fines as Covid admissions rise

Exclusive: targets on returning patient care to pre-pandemic levels ‘impossible’ to meet, say trusts

Hospitals in England will be fined for failing to meet “impossible” targets on patient care within weeks in a scheme criticised by NHS trust bosses as “mad, wrong and unfair”.

NHS England is facing calls to urgently rethink plans to impose financial penalties on trusts that fail to return non-emergency operations to near-normal levels by the end of this month.

The directive, which has sparked alarm among regional public health directors and local councils, was issued to hospitals in August and is still going ahead despite a resurgence of coronavirus that threatens to seriously disrupt the NHS this winter (Guardian)

Reports that Trump wanted to leave hospital and pull his shirt open to reveal a Superman shirt underneath, but was talked out of it. I find this more believable than the one about him thinking about resigning. Although obviously if he loses then losing will be exactly what he wanted.

One of the other key ways to stem the growing tide of infections is to fix the centralised test, trace and isolate system, which is working by finding infected people and asking them to tell their contacts to quarantine, Mckee added.

“It’s increasingly clear that the centralised system is quite dysfunctional,” he said.

“Whereas in Germany, Korea and elsewhere, what they’re doing is backward tracing, which is you identify a case, and then you go back until you find the source, and then you act on that. If we were able to identify where the sources of infection were we can act against them. We need intelligent responses, which we don’t have.”

I'm more apprehensive now than I've been at any other time during the pandemic.
People aren't being given the information or the resources to get through this.
I don't want to die now.
I don't want to lose Mr citizen.
I don't want to lose my loves.
