Despite the surprise increase in the deficit, a spokesman for the Treasury said the “government’s long-term economic plan is working”, with the UK economy growing faster than that of its G7 peers.

The denial machine is still working well. It's about the only thing produced by this government that does work reliably.

How can a task force, that looks into the concerns and benefits of shale extraction be truly independent when companies like Cuadrilla and Centrica fund it? Am I missing something, too cynical perhaps?

Tyne and Wear has voted to press ahead with reforms that will mean bus services outside London being taken back under public control for the first time since privatisation.

Interesting to note that Labour did legislate for this being able to happen in 2000, but apparently with "hoops".

Worth recalling that Labour did lose control of some cities where this would have been an obvious winner. eg Liverpool from 1998-2010.

I see the Telegraph is stripping out another 55 jobs according the update at the bottom. That might well explain why the blogs have seemed woefully sparse and samey for quite a while. Maybe people are scurrying around looking for alternative paid work. Can't see why Hodges should survive ... but you may well be right, he does seem to be teflon doom-proofed.

I think it might be a bit less cringey-scary than that (can you imagine the damage he might do as a writer anywhere near Ed's team?????) - the Zelo Street report seems to say he is out of the country so he might, just might, be enjoying himself a bit and the chip on his shoulder has temporarily softened. Ah - the question I've been dreading.

It's not good news. We took her away with us to Gloucestershire last week - still coming to terms with having been told she is on the brink of kidney failure .......... we don't know how long she has got - however long it is we are going to make the most of it with and for her. We are spoiling her rotten.

This is something that has come about because of the horrific treatment she endured before she was rescued. I could do unspeakable things to the people that abuse animals in that way.

Meanwhile she is an absolute cheeky delight and we hope to keep it that way for a while.

Their red line has been holding on to power at all costs.

The document captured on camera reveals that the Lib Dems will call for claimants for Jobseekers' Allowance to undergo English tests, and those assessed as "poor" would face benefit cuts unless they agree to take lessons. Under-21s would pay just a third of their bus fares to college or work and at least one GP in every area would open from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week.

There has already been a huge reduction in the availability of English Language classes .... where is the money going to come from? I shudder to think what kind of English Language lessons the private work fare providers might provide - given their record in job seeking and skills support.

And that under-21s only paying a third for their bus fares to college or work (how do you prove that?) is really going to make up for the £50,000+ debt they'll be in by the time they are 22.

Besides which I'm fairly sure anyone who is a student can already get a discounted bus fare. That's how it's worked for decades in my neck of the wood anyway.
