I get the impression from this that Rory Stewart doesn't think much of our PM...or Tom Bower either.

Perhaps it is envy. Johnson is after all the most accomplished liar in public life – perhaps the best liar ever to serve as prime minister. Some of this may have been a natural talent – but a lifetime of practice and study has allowed him to uncover new possibilities which go well beyond all the classifications of dishonesty attempted by classical theorists like St Augustine. He has mastered the use of error, omission, exaggeration, diminution, equivocation and flat denial. He has perfected casuistry, circumlocution, false equivalence and false analogy. He is equally adept at the ironic jest, the fib and the grand lie; the weasel word and the half-truth; the hyperbolic lie, the obvious lie, and the bullshit lie – which may inadvertently be true. And because he has been so famous for this skill for so long, he can use his reputation to ascend to new levels of playful paradox. Thus he could say to me “Rory, don’t believe anything I am about to say, but I would like you to be in my cabinet” – and still have me laugh in admiration.

So according to several right wing pundits this morning, losing an election by 5% of the vote (or perhaps more) is a triumph. Who knew?

I'm wondering whether Farage could see that his meal ticket in the US was coming to an end and that's why he's decided to give his political "career" over here a restart.

I look forward to the Republican announcement that despite losing seats and vote share, with a majority in the Senate they have a mandate to govern and Biden had better fall in line with them or they'll stop him doing anything.

If there's one thing the election has taught me, it's that I can't deal with the level of zeal and insanity in American politics, and if the tangerine ballbag does win, I'm going to stay away from that cesspit permanently, for the sake of my own sanity.

Quite right to be worried until it's a done deal but worth saying that the outcome still appears to be Biden. Of course we've been here before when everything needed to go right for Trump to win and then it did, but this time everything needs to go right for him even though in Pennsylvania and Nevada and Georgia, at least, it really doesn't appear to be and it's still his team who are making the big noises about Arizona. It's scary there because he's still got a chance to win it, not because he's on course to win it.

Pennsylvania will be sufficient - Biden could ultimately win by close to 100k there. And most of the remaining votes to count in Arizona are very likely his.

Plus he already has - just - enough unless you think Nevada is going to flip (unlikely)

Another nice geeky election fact - from the states last time Clinton won 232 college votes but officially 'scored' 227 because five of her electors in the college chose to vote for somebody else. If Biden ends up on 270, expect to hear more from the Republicans about the opportunities for faithless electors.

I couldn't think why Gina Miller was trending but then it became clear - whataboutery from Brexiteers.

This one is a barrister...betcha can't guess for which online magazine he writes for...

Jon Holbrook
@JonHolb
• Trump is merely seeking to ensure there have been no irregularities in the voting process.

Yet he’s called “a liar & a cheat” for issuing law suits.

Gina Miller sought to neuter a democratic decision with law suits.

She was described as upholding the rule of law.

Pretty much all the American news channels are now saying they think Biden is going to win Pennsylvania, even Fox are saying it's looking grim for Trump.

Biden needs to win around 65% of the remaining votes, but they're practically all postal votes which are predominantly from Democrats and Biden's been getting around 75% of them all day so he's well ahead of what he needs as a percentage. If that continues (and remember Trump told his voters not to vote by mail) then it'll all be over tonight.

The coolest thing about Magnetars is that their magnetic field is so ludicrously powerful (a trillion times that of Earth) that if you were dumb enough to get too close to one your atoms would become so distorted that your molecules would come apart and you'd dissolve.

That magnetar was 30,000 light years away so you should be fine unless you get on the wrong bus.

In other news, 'er indoors was looking forward to going back to work next week.

However, she had an email from that nice Mr Hancock telling her that she had "previously been identified as someone thought to be clinically extremely vulnerable and at highest risk of becoming very unwell if you catch COVID-19."

And so...she's not going back to work. Not happy.

At the moment Occupational health are saying not before the end of December but if we come out of lockdown in early December this might alter.

Well done to Lisa Nandy on QT for pointing out that this narrative that Trump has somehow 'won' by increasing his number of votes is bollocks when Biden has already garnered more votes than any presidential challenger in history and they've not even finished counting yet.
