Good morefternoon, anyone about?

Just to add to the discussion in the early hours - I like swede, and even turnips are tolerable.

Turnips and swedes are two of my favourite root vegetables. I never tasted a US-grown parsnip worth the time and energy harvesting and cooking them. UK-grown parsnips are magnificent.

I'll have to reconcile the Sky and PorFavor disclosures on last night's thread with the love I have for them. I won't let differences of this sort come between us though I'm still reeling. It explains why some of the lentil stews I shared here weren't touched by either of them. They went straight for the rhubarb-raspberry crumble.

Morning all.

Wes Streeting seems to be going down well with edu people hat normally despair of Labour edu policies.

Labour ‘got it wrong’ on scrapping Ofsted, says shadow schools minister

https://schoolsweek.co.uk/labour-got-it ... ssion=true

Quote:
Although welcomed by teaching unions, Streeting, who has been in post for just over a month, said the policy went down badly with families.

“I think what Labour got wrong, if I can be frank, before the last election was that the public heard the scrap Ofsted bit. They didn’t hear the ‘we want to replace it with something better’ bit. And as a result, I can tell you that one cut through pretty quickly to parents and grandparents who were saying ‘why are you going soft on standards?'”

“That’s not where I’m prepared to be and where I think the Labour Party should be. But the fundamental point here is don’t tell us what you want to scrap, tell us what you want to build.”

Streeting said Ofsted was “there to assure us, whether Parliament or parents and the public, that standards in schools are as we’d expect them to be”, adding that theirs was a “really important role”.

And this bit is interesting too.

Quote:
He questioned whether safeguarding inspection should be “lumped in” with current “high-stakes” visits,

The first thing Ofsted check is the Single Central register which has details of everyone who works with children and that includes all staff, midday assistants, people who come in on a regular basis; with their DBS. If it isn't up to scratch they walk away immediately and give you a Fail.

Should they be able to simply walk in unannounced and without warning to do this? Probably.

Only sweet potatoes worth eating are grown in the US. I don't like eating food grown so far from where I live so I'll give them up. If anyone knows a good sweet potato or alternative root vegetable like it grown nearer the UK, let me know.

Let's do something other than stockpiling resources in advance of Tory government incompetence. I don't know what exactly but I'm thinking. Suggestions welcome.

V happy with the overall "root vegetable" discussion.
Which of course, technically, sweet "potatoes" are, and "actual" potatoes aren't.

So far my favourite is from Merriam-Webster which more or less defines a tuber as something which resembles a tuber.

Well, of course we're all shocked shocked!

Inquiry 'found Priti Patel broke behaviour rules'

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-55007122

Quote:
The report, carried out by the government's independent adviser on standards, Sir Alex Allan, has not been published.

But one source said it had concluded that the "home secretary had not met the requirements of the ministerial code to treat civil servants with consideration and respect".

They added that the investigation had found evidence of bullying, even if it had not been intentional.

Another source who saw the report called it "unambiguous in stating that Priti Patel broke the ministerial code and that the prime minister buried it".

Action that'd shake up government. They're so damned complaisant, ignorant of how much they rely upon other people. Not causing them physical harm, they're scoundrels, they'll likely have protection and I don't do violence anyway.

It's not all. I roasted some lumps of celeriac and of fennel around a piece of pork belly last weekend and they both came out lovely. (I'm not lumping fennel in as a root here, it's just what happened). Parsnip and celeriac mash is very nice too.

Sweet potato is one of the very few food things I really don't like. Not sure why. Tried it a few ways but never been keen and never persisted.

There's also this

Trump administration in 'staggering' isolation at UN on health issues

Quote:
The outgoing Trump administration’s final days at the United Nations have resulted in a deepening of US isolation on social and health issues, with only a handful of allies including Russia, Belarus and Syria.
In one vote this week, the US was entirely alone in backing its own amendment to a seemingly uncontroversial resolution about efforts to treat medical complications from childbirth. It called for the removal of references to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Population Fund.
No other nation agreed, with 153 voting against the amendment and 11 abstaining.
