Morning all. I have to say this is pretty hilarious...

Joe Biden gains votes in Wisconsin county after Trump-ordered recount

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/202 ... ed-recount" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A recount in Wisconsin’s largest county demanded by President Donald Trump’s election campaign ended on Friday with the president-elect, Joe Biden, gaining votes.

After the recount in Milwaukee county, Biden made a net gain of 132 votes, out of nearly 460,000 cast. Overall, the Democrat gained 257 votes to Trump’s 125.

Trump’s campaign had demanded recounts in two of Wisconsin’s most populous and Democratic-leaning counties, after he lost Wisconsin to Biden by more than 20,000 votes. The two recounts will cost the Trump campaign $3m. Dane county is expected to finish its recount on Sunday.

This worth a read...

A peculiar definition of sovereignty is the root cause of a failed Brexit

https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/brexit/2020/11/ ... ed-brexit/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
What is sovereignty?

The Brexiteers’ definition of sovereignty has always been the core of the problem. It is the greatest failure of the Remain campaign that they scarcely engaged, let alone won, this battle. It left them unable to expose the reality that Brexit meant throwing away control, not taking it back.

Trading across borders means regulating across borders, and the more you want to trade, the more regulation you need. This goes for services and data as much as for goods. ‘Sovereignty’ in this context means having control not only of regulation in your domestic market but in the markets you sell to and buy from. In the 1960s, Britain vividly experienced the drawbacks of having no control over the European market and too small a domestic market for its manufacturers. EFTA did not provide what was needed, so only membership of the EEC would enable Britain to defend its national economic interests effectively. It was less a case of giving sovereignty away than, by sharing it, extending our sovereignty to mainland Europe.
Quite.

But the "less red tape!" line is the one which always gets made until something bad happens and then it will be "OK, so we need some red tape after all"...

But that doesn’t change the fact that there has long been a transatlantic exchange of ideas between the two nations’ centre-right parties and there are some disturbing parallels in the rise of Trump and his debasement of Grand Old Party and the rise of Johnson and the debasement of the Tories.

Why not open and staff all the Nightingale hospital capacity they need for CV 19 cases and get the rest of the NHS back to full capacity for everything else? No need to scare us with the idea the NHS will not cope.

Hopefully even republicans will be tired of it all by then.

Clearly we (society) need to deal with the global Crucible-type madness (fake news believers) but I don't think pandering (no pun intended) to it is the way.

If my calculator's working that means Trump has just spent $34,482 on each new vote that's gone to Biden in Wisconsin.

Not his money of course, it's all fundraised from slack jawed yokels, but at least now they won't be spending it on tacky bandanas and methamphetamine.
