Covid-driven recession likely to push 2m UK families into poverty
Hidden behind this otherwise true and worrying headline is a damning indictment of Tory benefit changes way before we had to contend with coronavirus:
Around 1m households experienced destitution in 2019, up 35% since 2017, equivalent to 2.4 million people

Patriotism or national pride is the feeling of love, devotion, and sense of attachment to a homeland and alliance with other citizens who share the same sentiment. This attachment can be a combination of many different feelings relating to one's own homeland, including ethnic, cultural, political or historical aspects.

Patriotism - Wikipedia
My international travel documentation is a necessity; the only feeling of pride I felt producing my passport was in not having lost it. English is my first language. I've moved around a lot of different places in the world but never felt it imperative I learn another language. I've frequently met with people speaking English as a second, third, fourth language. I admire their greater knowledge. I feel the same when I hear someone play an instrument I've never learned to play. I've sometimes felt vicarious pride in the accomplishments of immediate family members but not extended. I don't have the same emotional attachment to relatives I don't know. I don't recall ever feeling pride or shame over actions of people I share nothing more than citizenships with. I'm attached to Labour. I didn't like my Spice Girls t-shirt going missing but I got over it. If my Hell Yes t-shirt disappears I'm declaring war.

I didn't really understand the Islington comment. Is it a London thing or a politics thing? I know Corbyn represents part of Islington but don't see how that works as a joke on Starmer. Either way it made Boris look kind of stupid when Starmer calmly explained he was in Camden.

Apparently its that Starmer represents the "Islington mentality" - whatever *that* might actually be.

I made some lentil and carrot soup earlier with cumin and smoked parika, no parsnip unfortunately.

At some point I really must get round to inventing a miniature wind turbine you can strap to your backside because after that soup I'm pretty sure I could power a small town.

More Californians died from COVID-19 on Tuesday than any other day, the latest milestone in an accelerating pandemic that is infecting and hospitalizing residents at levels far eclipsing any seen before.
---
Nearly 1,400 Californians have died from COVID-19 in the last 14 days. Since the pandemic began, the disease has killed more than 20,200 statewide.
---
The sharp spike in fatalities seen over the last few weeks is the realization of what public health officials have long feared — that a tsunami of new coronavirus cases would not only swamp the state’s hospitals with patients, but swell the number of residents dying from the disease.

“Our message is: As much as you can, stay at home,” Dr. Mark Ghaly, California’s health and human services secretary, said Tuesday. “We know that it works. We know that we can bring our transmission rates down.”

Still, conditions statewide are continuing to deteriorate.

California recorded 34,490 new coronavirus cases Monday... .

- Children will be taught how to think, not what to think.

- We'll reform public institutions and defund those who seek to undermine and divide society.

- Police to focus on actual crime and not thought crime.

- Free Speech Act legislation to protect freedom of expression.
Given that the 2024 election will be fought, as most are, on jobs and the economy but even more so probably on "How the government cocked up Brexit"; I can't actually see this sorry bunch doing that well.

They might hoover up some Brexit Party voters but no more than that.

In normal circumstances it would be astonishing to think that four and a half years after the Brexit vote, they're still discussing the deal but then you consider who is on our side and it becomes perfectly believable.

The equivalent of doing your homework on the bus going to school weeks after it was set.

Breaking: In a “frank” discussion tonight, Johnson and von der Leyen agreed that “very large gaps remain,” according to a 10 Downing St source. The pair agreed that by Sunday a “firm decision” had to be made whether it’s deal or no deal. Talks to continue over the next few days.

Given nobody seems to be stopping Laurence Fox making a total arse of himself I'd love to know why he thinks legislation is needed to protect freedom of expression.

Being heckled at his gigs and dropped by his acting agent isn't censorship, it's the consequence of being a dickhead.

In the U.S it's the stated aim of the kind of far right groups Fox so admires, they literally want to bring down soceity and recreate it in their own image, but while they may be on his side of the so called 'culture war' even he's not dumb enough to advocate armed revolution. And there's also the fact he's a massive wuss.

I was watching a Come Dine With Me at the weekend where a splendidly snooty Frenchman claimed that the continental view of Englishmen was that they were overweight and badly dressed. He was shouted down and accused of Gallic arrogance but if he'd taken the argument to a court of law and used the above picture as evidence I suspect it would now be perfectly legal to refer to Englishmen as ill groomed fat bastards.

I mean why the fuck does Johnson always look like he's wearing baggy jodhpurs? He has access to the finest Savile Row tailors and yet they don't seem to be able to make him a pair of trousers that fit. I can only assume his massive arse and skinny legs makes their job impossible. But it still must be quite upsetting to make an expensive suit and see it in action looking like someone has haphazardly stuffed it full of mashed potato.

Ah well what do I know, he's obviously a fine figure of a man, I mean why else would pole dancing American entrepreneurs looking for public contracts and pole climbing Tory socialites looking for money and power sleep with him?

That one is a bit odd since his bestest new mate is most definitely a trad-(ex) teacher. "How to think" sounds very woolly and progressive.

It's getting towards Fox mating season, late December early January.

The males will be barking at night soon competing for territory and the females will begin making that weird eerie call that means they're in heat and trying to attract a mate.

Probably best to keep Laurence and Claire away from each other for a while.
