Six reasons why those who want to shift the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union need to now think in five-year cycles

From the above.
The European Union is all too aware of the rapid convulsions that the European Union issue can cause to the politics of the United Kingdom.

Remember that in 2015 there was a general election in the United Kingdom where every major party was in favour of membership of the European Union – and three prime ministers and two general elections later, the United Kingdom is no longer a member state.

And 2015 was, well, five years ago.

The European Union has no interest in a substantial shift in its relationship with the United Kingdom which could quickly become undone.
Quite.

And I think this is why Starmer needs to be clear as to why he wants Labour to back this trade agreement - it's better than no deal at all, and there will be future opportunities to alter the relationship. Backing the agreement doesn't mean all is lost for ever.

Rupa Huq saying 20 Labour MPs could defy the whip tomorrow and vote against the deal. That's fairly small beer compared to the A50 vote amongst others.

I don't see the point of voting against unless it's "we don't want to be seen voting with Tories" - it's this deal or no deal. That's it. For now anyway.

I note that Blue Labour type Paul Embery has been getting stroppy over his "I'm just reporting what the NHS said" line - just like JHB and Clare Fox had also done. So much so that he wrote an article for that well-known left leaning website..er..UnHerd.

Don't disagree tbh - (Scottish) Labour getting some stick for saying the SNP are "voting for no deal", but that sort of *is* what they are doing innit?

Never voting with the Tories has worked well for the SNP but Labour needs to be more careful, I think, that not voting with the Tories doesn't become voting with the Tory rebels on the extreme side, rather than the more moderate side, of the party (and I appreciate 'moderate' is a rather relative term in this case).

Rather depressing post from Simon Wren-Lewis

It is inevitable that Labour in opposition will not be a champion of social liberalism

Some truth in it for sure, though its more about choosing what to prioritise I would say.

Will there be any ERG rebels? Can't help thinking that, in the end, they'd have rolled over for something softer, such is the lack of protest.

Based on what happened a year ago, they will "discover" what a rubbish deal it was only after they vote for it.

They could embarrass the govt a bit by talking about this
in at least one area the UK and EU have broken new ground, and that is in the battle against climate change. Previous EU trade agreements talked a good game without much substance; this one enshrines commitments on reducing emissions, including those from aviation, and implementing carbon pricing. There are also enforcement mechanisms, both domestic and through the trade agreement.
or
the strongest labour and environment commitments ever seen in a trade deal
Neither of those will be quite what the headbangers had in mind.

I've just bought my daughter a new school coat in the sales. What are the chances of it seeing the inside of a school over the next four weeks, I wonder.

@willow

My daughter’s school head has just emailed (during a much, much needed break) to say School is closed next Monday, to give them some prep time, then will be open for Year 11 and kids who need to be there from other years for the rest of the week.

They are expecting to return to full school as normal the following week, with rapid testing in place. They are asking for DBS cleared volunteers from the community to administer the tests.

I truly admire the fortitude the School are showing. Not sure they should be in this position.

At this point, given no deal is the only alternative, then voting against it is voting for no deal. Abstaining maybe greyer area.
