In a year we'll remember the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War. Can we ask Eastwood or Spielberg to do an unashamedly patriotic film? The sort of blockbuster our arts sector is embarrassed by, even as it trousers £1.5bn of taxpayers's covid cash.

Maybe he doesn't know any British film directors...

NHS chiefs fear collision course with ministers over Covid backlog

Had a similar case in retail (though obviously on a much smaller scale) where one of our shops ended up with a backlog in unpacking due to disruption during a refit which they then got stuck with going into the Christmas season. Ended up in a mess, boxes everywhere, delayed customer orders etc. I was asked to look into it and found nothing wrong with their systems. They were running a very tight ship up until the refit and that was the problem. There wasn't any slack that could be filled in order to catch up and I'm pleased to say head office agreed with my assessment and stumped up the cash for extra temps to work on the backlog outside normal hours.
The NHS is in exactly the same situation. They will never catch up with resources set for normal times, the backlog will simply become entrenched. They will need more equipment (especially MRIs) and more staff working routine appointments outside regular hours. This should have been anticipated and investment in training and new equipment should have begun a year ago. It's not rocket science, it's basic logistics.

The really tricky part is that even if they were prepared to stump up the cash, it's far from certain there would be enough staff.

That's why they should have expanded recruitment for training a year ago, as soon as routine appointments were paused, with a long term plan for the expansion of certain key areas to increase capacity as soon as possible. If they're only thinking about how to deal with the backlog now, the Dept of Health has already failed in their remit to maintain a universal health care service. There is no excuse for failing to anticipate and address these issues.

EU/Single Market freedom of movement would help too, but we can't have that.

I'd be surprised if Simon Stevens hasn't been banging on about this to Hancock for a year now.

Incidentally, I'm regretting that I failed to mention here my prediction, back in January, that the vaccine rollout would grind to a halt once the need for 12 week second doses came round.
3 weeks ago they were telling us that they'd double the vax capacity so it could carry on, I hope someone's got that on record for the Inquiry which isn't going to happen.

But in the current usage:

I've said it before and will again, getting so many of these twonks in one place might have a slightly beneficial effect overall.

It might be quite a fun (?) thing to do to sit and watch a day's output and do a running commentary on here...any volunteers for this task (should you choose to accept it)?
