One was an unopened bottle of Taylor's 'crusted' Port from 1973. I told him it was probably worth a bit of money so not to open it but he's payed no attention and has just been round in a very merry mood offering me a glass. It was extremely tasty and probably the most expensive drink I've ever had. For free.
If he'd enjoy having drunk it tell him; if he'd regret having done so, don't.

Someone will need to tell PF to PTO.

He came and knocked on my door and asked, 'So you think this might have been worth some money then?'
I showed him and he seemed completely unfazed but it transpired he'd also been drinking some 50 year old rum liqueur that had also been in the drinks cabinet, but opened. I had a tiny taste and it was like Tia Maria meets radioactive waste.
With the label in near pristine condition I reckon that bottle of Port must have been worth at least £400.
Did I mention he voted for Brexit and got thrown out of a local pub for loudly slagging off Muslims?
He's not a common or garden racist though, he's a devout Catholic who hates all other religions equally so at least he's consistent. It's funny how old hippies turn out.

I remember sitting up drinking with him one night and him telling me the liberal left hated Catholics and I responded with all honesty that in all my years as a lefty I'd never heard anyone mention Catholics at all. Nobody cared anymore and he was fighting yesterday's battles. Unless he wanted to campaign for a United Ireland.
He went back to the pub he'd been thrown out of (The Preston, it's part of the North Bar franchise and very middle class lefty) and complained they were stifling his free speech, was refused service and tonight was the first time I'd really talked to him about it. I did my best to point out free speech doesn't mean you can just wander in to whatever establishment you like and vent your spleen without consequence but he'd become intermittently unresponsive so I took him upstairs to bed.

Though there is certainly such a thing as anti-Catholic prejudice still lurking with some, remember Paul Mason's comments on RLB?
Ah I see, it makes sense to abbreviate her in more ways than one.

That's more cryptic than RLB.

Another byelection coming up - in Chesham and Amersham where Cheryl Gillan has just died.
Safe enough for the Tories on paper.

I've been to Swindon today - which is not something I get to say very often. My son had to have the Pfizer jab specifically so we were offered a slot at the hospital there (he has IBD). I'm not sure why we had to go so far but the roads were quiet so it only took about 3 hours altogether but Easter Monday has been a bit of a right off as a result.
I haven't even been offered a jab yet, though. It's nice to still be a "youngster" but I am starting to feel a bit left out. Like there's two worlds opening up - the 'have jabs' and the 'jab nots'.

Good evening.
The publicity-hungry HT of the Best School in England (sic) has been at it again...
Katharine Birbalsingh is the headteacher of the Michaela community school, a free (or charter) school in Wembley Park, north-west London, and the only head prepared to speak openly. She prides herself on Michaela’s stringent discipline.
“We’re super-strict,” she says, “so this nonsense doesn’t happen with us. Our boys would never treat our girls like that. It just wouldn’t happen.”
The problem is that you cannot assume that - and the Keeping Children Safe in Education says this:
41. Staff working with children are advised to maintain an attitude of ‘it could happen here’ where safeguarding is concerned
But her fan-club backs her up despite me and others pointing this out. How many organisations in the past have said "Oh, it can't happen here..."?
CWU Hartlepool by-election poll: Conservative 49%, Labour 42%. More importantly shows massive support for transformative policies (69% support free broadband, 67% more investment in public services, 57% support renationalising Royal Mail) – @davewardgs https://t.co/A1ysC5Zh4g" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
