Cummings is so full of shit.

He did use security as an excuse to drive his family to Durham at the time, this isn't new information, he's trying to rewrite history again. I clearly remember him sitting in front of that table telling a sob story about protesters shouting outside his house and how that meant he had to leave with his family. Unless I'm mistaken and have imagined that for some inexplicable reason. The MPs on the panel certainly seem unaware of it.

JFT96.
Goldberg argued there was no case to answer, and that Metcalf was entitled to remove whole “topics” of relevant evidence from police statements, because he had no legal duty to tell the whole truth to the Taylor inquiry.

Arguing that the legal duty could be the court’s only consideration, Goldberg said: “This court is not a court of morals. This court is not a court of common decency.”

Margaret Aspinall.
“It’s the cover-up of the cover-up of the cover-up,” she said. “Our loved ones went to a football match and were killed, then they and the survivors were branded hooligans, and we’ve been put through a 32-year legal nightmare looking for the truth and accountability. Now they’re saying the police were allowed to change statements and cover up at Taylor. The legal system in this country really has to change.”

I'm not suggesting it does, but he's a fascinating case study in incontinent bullshitting, especially in regard to himself. Unfortunately this makes him such an unreliable narrator that whatever he says today will have little to no effect.

"Cost of protecting Dominic Cummings"
https://www.met.police.uk/foi-ai/metrop ... -cummings/
I note you seek access to the following information:

Information is requested on the total cost to the taxpayer of operations undertaken by the Metropolitan Police and Diplomatic Protection Group (DPG) to protect the home, and streets immediately surrounding the home, of Dominic Cummings, Chief Advisor to the Prime Minister during May 2020; and additionally requesting a figure for the total cost of any similar operations in April 2020./quote]

Not sure how much use this is, but thought reply interesting.
It confirms police were involved when there were protesters outside his house in April, but refusing to confirm or deny any further costs incurred during April or May for security reasons.

"Dominic Cummings may have audio recordings to back up his allegations, say Whitehall sources"
https://inews.co.uk/news/dominic-cummin ... es-1019000
In particular, Downing Street is concerned that Mr Cummings may have a recording of Mr Johnson saying he would prefer to “let the bodies pile high” rather than authorising a second lockdown, which he did eventually concede to last November.
Fingers crossed...

Because Johnson feels right at home surrounded by chaos and liars.

Hancock's made himself indispensable to the PPE profiteers.

We knew nearly all of this last year but the MSM courtiers don't care about the people any more than the govt does.

And again we can hear the refrain of "normal people don't care about this" from the usual suspects.

Even if that is (largely) true, so what?

Indeed. Cummings is revealing little we didn't already know other than that he heroically and selflessly stayed in his position to try to save us all.

Dominic Cummings has a fairly low opinion of the Prime Minister, but nevertheless, was keen enough to utilise every trick in the book to get him into offce.

Reading between the lines, he likes "Michael" (Gove) and "Rishi" (Sunak). He can't stand "Hancock" but how much of his dislike is based on purely personal animosity I can't decide.

Jeremy Hunt, who is responsible for the dangerous mess the country found itself in at the start of Covid (eg the lack of usable PPE) has sickeningly slid into the position of wise elder statesman with no reference ever being made to his part in the disaster.

I agree with Dominic Cummings that Matt Hancock has been kept in post to take all the blame (justifiably or otherwise) for the cock-ups.

It would have been interesting if one of them had asked Cummings why, if taking things out of civil service and Whitehall hands was an inherently superior way of going about things, has the test, track and trace system he was involved in setting up been such an unmitigated disaster?

I don't doubt much of what he's said today about Johnson and his government's shambolic incompetence, or Johnson's cavalier attitude, because we knew most of it already. We know Johnson thinks the mayor from Jaws was a hero, we know he was vehemently opposed to lockdowns, he gave a speech in February 2020 decrying them and saying we'd take economic advantage of any country that had one. We know Johnson had stopped listening to Sage in September and instead was allowing Gupta and Heneghan whisper dangerous nonsense in his ear.

The problem is, despite a couple of bouts of false modesty, Cummings just spent 7 hours stroking his own ego while giving a very convincing performance of an arrogant, psuedo intellectual narcissist and flat out bullshitter when it came to his own misdemeanours.

It'll be fun to witness the fall out from his performance, because performance it was replete with dramatic pauses and poses, but unless he provides hard evidence there'll be no consequences.

The messages he was delivering were right, he was just the wrong person to deliver them.

Yes to all of this. Especially the sheer brass neck of admitting the man he was instrumental in getting elected as PM isn't fit for office and expecting to be applauded for this way too late to be useful piece of information.

Also (and this might have come from a fevered dream of mine, but I don't think so), didn't Dominic Cummings (Dom#1) sing the praises of Dominic Raab (Dom #2)? Hasn't Dom#1 seriously undermined his own credibility by voicing such a deranged opinion?

On second thoughts though, if we were are to take that as an implication that Dom#2 would be a better Prime Minister than Boris Johnson, then . . .

One of the most curious things about his performance is Cummings evidently thinks the country should be run by an intellectual elite (of people who agree with him) so he's essentially a technocrat despite all the bollocks we got from Vote Leave about brexit being democracy vs the 'elite'. He's not a democrat at all. He even admitted trying to fill posts with his own unelected cronies as a buffer against Johnson's ineptitude.

Whether he considers Dominic Raab large of brain enough to be a member of his chosen few we do not know, but he definitely did heap praise on his namesake with the cold, dead eyes.

Anyway, football time.

Regarding the abject failure of the press to properly scrutinise the important things, there's a new video out about Andrew Wakefield and vaccine denial. The effects of his 'study' are still being felt today, with the current anti-vax movement.

I never realised just how much of a scumbag Wakefield is. If you have 1hr 45mins to spare, I would recommend a watch:

The really infuriating part of all this is that almost everyone already knew this, we really didn't need to find out the hard way.

It was the complete and utter predictability of it (certainly once United gave a sloppy goal away) that is most depressing tbh.

But Corbyn.
Yes, but Corbyn. I'm afraid to say once Johnson consolidated almost the entire brexit vote then Labour's only chance was to do the same with the remainers. They did it in 2017 and came within a hair's breadth of winning. Unfortunately a certain Jeremy Corbyn dicked around for the next couple of years, pissed lots of remainers off, lost their votes and got hammered. He's got a lot to answer for but I doubt we'll ever get an apology because he's as vain as Cummings.

(Just venting Gilsey, peace and love and all that :) )

I wouldn't say it was a sloppy goal, more a well worked set piece that Villarreal got right. United just never got properly going and again I'd put that down to Villarreal's excellent organisation. Unai Emery is a proper football manager. Ole Solskjaer, much as I love him, is masquerading as one.

United have one single tactic, and if the opposition don't indulge them they look clueless.

It was a set piece arising from sloppy United play, not least from our goalkeeper

OGS has some things going for him, but he tends to passivity when he should be thinking about changes. Not good on a night like tonight.

Oh, and those who laughed at Maguire's transfer fee are looking a bit foolish right now.

I think you're being a bit harsh about the goal but I agree with the rest. Maguire may not be the most skillful defender ever but he tends to be in the right place at the right time. Like Vidic.
