Just in case the tweet from yesterday gave a false impression that only foods preferred by middle class, remoaner, metropolitan elite types were being affected by Brexit, I feel it necessary to point out that our local Tesco is almost completely out of all frozen vegetables. It's not really acceptable, is it? Imagine if a Labour government had presided over such a shitshow.

That's the test we should apply to everything this useless govt does/doesn't do, isn't it.
We might not be in this mess if the MSM asked themselves that.

I thought Embery's tweet also had a racist edge to it, some of those items being everyday staples for brown people of any social class.

He's totally unrepentant though, like Kilcoyne after this.

Joking about shortages is the Brexit supporters only available response if they won't admit they were wrong.

At the hairdressers last week they were laughing about the McD's milkshake shortage being on the news, but it was presented as a joke anyway, with vox pops of people who were upset by it. They were baffled by my insistence that it certainly is news if a global capitalist organisation is failing to provide its specialist service to its usual standard.

Kilcoyne was whining about being "bullied" on Twitter just the other day (in other words, people were pointing out his arguments were fallacious)

Never mind supermarket shortages, when we got back to my parents house the pub across the road was shut with a note in the window saying they had no beer. Turns out they couldn't get it delivered due to the driver shortage. So a pub run by a brexiter with an almost entirely brexit supporting clientele had to close over the busiest bank holiday weekend as a result of their own stupidity. Oh how my remainer dad and I laughed then went for a pint along the road instead.

Fantastic.
I was thinking about you last week, every weather forecast telling us the best weather was in Scotland.

We've been there in the past in good weather, because we waited until the last minute to book something. Not a viable proposition at present.

The Labour Party
@UKLabour
What’s an extra £1.09 an hour really worth?

If you work 35 hours a week it’s another £38.

Which means more food on the table, new school shoes for the kids, or being able to pay that electricity bill.

This is really lame, particularly that 'or' in the last sentence. Aspirations re heating and eating to be discouraged.

According to Stephen Oppenheimer, even the Saxons failed to replace "us" (ancient britons). In the East of England Saxon DNA only accounts for something like 5% of collective genetic make up. And in general this proportion decreases as you move westwards. Of course there's loads of other DNA from all of "our" other various ancestors.

It was weird being in the Highlands because you'd imagine it to be quite monocultural as it were, but the precise opposite is true, at least in the tourist season. A visit to the Fort William Morrisons revealed a plethora of languages, skin tones, styles of dress, it was like being in a multicultural bazaar.

As for Covid, masks are still a legal requirement indoors in Scotland and that was being adhered to by just about everyone as far as I could tell. Against my better judgement we went to a number of pubs and restaurants which were all absolutely packed and I can't say I felt entirely comfortable, especially after I tried ringing a couple of places to book a table and they were closed due to Covid outbreaks.

On a brighter note the food was really good wherever we went...except the Spice Tandoori in Fort William. Despite decent reviews my chicken Balti was horrible, the worst curry I've had in a long time, lumps of chewy chicken in an orange gloop with barely any vegetables. I'd have complained but the girl serving us was cute and lovely and I didn't have the heart to upset her. The best was seas bass and gnocci in a pesto sauce at the Lochailort Inn, yum.

Splendid isn't it? Though I thought £22 for a 15 minute trip up the side of a mountain was a bit steep if you'll pardon the sort of pun. Also my right ear refused to pop so I spent all my time up there in mild agony. Still, the haggis crisps they sold in the cafe at the top were great so it was worth it.

@sky yes we were very surprised by the multicultural multilingual mix in Fort William - including on the cable car.

Actually my two Spice Tandoori curries were ok - maybe just a bad evening :-(

So funny we’ve been round the same places!!

I miss the 'Like' button, as it gives me pleasure to acknowledge interesting info/ well thought-out contributions/ er ... the existence of others without having to type some deathless prose !

In everyday conversation you don't have to say stuff, a 'nod of approval' and other body-language is very definitely conveyed in a 'like' .

Did you go see the Harry Potter choo-choo train go over the Glenfinnan viaduct?

Image

I had no idea why there were hundreds of people there to watch the train until the childrens book/film connection was explained to me by my dad and brother, which apparently made me some kind of idiot and figure of fun to be mocked for his lamentable lack of fictional child wizard knowledge.

If I may offer an opinion, Leeds have paid £25 million for someone really good at running but pretty shit at football. His attitude is excellent and he'll work his socks off, but unfortunately he can't pass, cross the ball or shoot very well. Then again Bielsa's taken less talented players and got the best out of them so you never know. He's certainly got the energy to fit right into Leeds' style of play.

He's filming, along with a large gaggle of Japanese girls right behind me. Usually I'm quite happy to be in the vicinity of excited Japanese females but they disturbed a golden ringed dragonfly I was admiring.

Talking of insects the midges were fine during the day, it was too hot for them, but the minute the sun went down, and I mean within seconds, the little bastards were out. Also a bumblebee somehow managed to get in the car, probably attached to my leg, and when I reached to get something from my pocket it stung me on the hand. I've never been stung by a bumblebee before and I can confirm that it hurts like fuck. Afterwards it just sauntered up onto my knee and sat there as if nothing had happened.

This one came as a recommendation from one of my dad's mates in the pub. Besides discussing music he was telling me how he hadn't been able to smell anything or get an erection after catching Covid in that very same pub the night England lost in the final of the Euros. He was there supporting England so my sympathy was somewhat limited.
