Bung de bung de bung de bung. Sorry, being unduly cynical in my middle age!

I trained there every weekend when I was 15/16 (I was a swimmer)

Used to chat to the likes of Geoff Capes. Nice bloke. David Bedford was a miserable git.

Where did you hear about this, letsskip? The website doesn't say anything and the buildings are listed - plus there's been a lot of money spent on it in the past few years upgrading the facilities.

Guess who is the executive chairman of the group involved? Why, Sebastian Bloody Lord Muckybrass Coe.

Clearly not happy with the millions he made out of the Olympics, he wants more.

Surprise surprise. Not.

The other odd bit from Gibb's speech was when he talked up free schools.
This was why this government launched the free schools programme in 2010. We wanted to provide outlets for idealism - opportunities for dedicated groups of individuals who believed they could improve school provision.

Such groups of individuals have exceeded our expectations. The best academy chains, such as Ark Schools and the Harris Federation, have expanded and replicated their proven success. Ark Schools have opened 3 free schools, with 8 more in development. Likewise, the Harris Federation has opened 8 free schools, with 5 more in development.
Right...so talking up free schools by using the two best-known academy chains as examples?

I do wish someone would ask them the question of "What's the difference between free schools and ordinary academies when you use academy chains as examples of great free schools?"
If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

New ‘Solar Cloth’ Allows Solar Cells To Be Stretched Across Parking Lots, Stadiums
"According to Solar Cloth Company, there are about 320 square miles of roof space and 135 square miles of parking space in the U.K. that could be covered by solar cloth, and if all of these spaces were covered, the solar power produced would be enough to power the U.K.’s grid three times. "

Solar is also starting to show up in new places, moving away from the traditional rooftop model. This week, the Netherlands unveiled the world’s first solar bike lane, a project that’s only predicted to create enough energy to power two or three homes but which, if this first test is successful, could be scaled up in the future. One couple also wants to make solar roads a reality in the U.S., replacing asphalt with hexagonal solar panels covered by protective glass. .. :)

New Era tenants fear eviction by Christmas after rent promise rescinded
US-based Westbrook Partners reneges on deal not to raise rents again until 2016, after Tory MP’s firm quits consortium
http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014 ... -christmas
Bastards.
Attention has now shifted to Westbrook, a multinational company whose London portfolio of properties also includes Dolphin Square, a block of 1930s apartments in central London long popular with MPs.

In April, Westbrook was labelled a “predatory landlord” by tenants in Three Borough Pool, a group of 44 buildings in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.

After protests outside New York city hall, the US attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, forced Westbrook and the three other owners of Three Borough Pool to make repairs to the 1,592 properties, resolve thousands of building violations and provide tenants with more than $1m in rebates for illegal fees and overcharges.
Wasn't it Ed Miliband who identified the problem with 'predatory' businesses a while back ... and got derided for it?

And this is why we really do need rent controls and regulation back.

As previously noted on FTN Solar Power is certainly taking off in Australia.

http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre ... nt-compete

The problem is the UK doesn't get much sun (in Manchester you would presumably need to coat "blimps" in solar cloth and tether them so they rise above the cloud tops).

Things to watch for: unit price per generated Watt, efficiency and cheap domestic power storage. It looks like it works in Oz. Maybe in twenty years it will work here.

Being able to wrap your house in solar cells would be way cool.

When they say sub sample what do they mean? If it is a chunk of a national poll forget it. That approach is utter garbage as the sample size is always way too small and the profile usually hopelessly out.

As soon as interest rates dropped to nothing BTL took on a life of its own. I'm pretty sure if interest rates went up, a lot of BTL landlords would sell up. Many of them only went into renting houses because it gives a better return than most other investments.

'Bad back' stopped golfing MP Glyn Davies canvassing
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-30074116
A Welsh Tory MP has dismissed criticism he ignored calls to campaign in a Kent by-election, but visited the area to play golf, as "a silly story".

The Sunday Times has said Montgomeryshire's Glyn Davies, 70, was just seven miles (11 km) from Rochester when he played on a nearby course.

But he told BBC Wales he cannot canvass because he has a bad back and cannot walk far.

Mr Davies said he could play golf because he used a buggy.

Conservative Chief Whip Michael Gove is understood to have had ordered MPs to visit the area three times before Thursday's by-election against Mark Reckless, the Tory MP who defected to UKIP.

But Mr Davies admitted he had not visited the area once, but did go to the nearby Tudor Park Marriott Hotel and Country Club with his wife for bed and breakfast and a round of golf.
He must be one of the 100 MPs who have apparently refused to go to Rochester and canvas - as ordered by Dave. But, of course, that wider context is missing from this story and the BBC Wales news item I watched earlier.

Editing to add: Oh, and another triumph of Gove's whipping .... by whatever, he's proving his real worth in this job, isn't he.

Labour experiencing ‘squeaky bum time’, says Sadiq Khan
Opposition MPs told to stop complaining and help win election, as poll shows Ed Miliband taking four-point lead over Tories

I love Sadiq Khan he

“We lost really badly and people forget that. But we’re competitive again, and we’ve great set of candidates and policies. Politics is a team sport. It’s really easy to blame the leader.

Gove was, and is, fucking useless. As Education Secretary he was fucking useless, and as Chief Whip I don't imagine he's disappointed anyone by being so crap at it that no-one's scared of him and his office. It can't help trying to maintain discipline in a party that loathes its leader as much as the Tories clearly do, but you'd have thought that threatening to withdraw the whip from the most egregious examples might sober some of the other UKIP bound sheep. Apparently not, or else I'm sure we'd have heard about it happening. Gove and Cameron are being trampled on.

This is, of course, bad news for Ed Miliband, as I'm sure you'd agree. The recent disaster of three unnamed MPs calling for him to step down simply show how poor his ability to deal with such widespread parliamentary dissent is, whereas Cameron is still bouyant and in tip top form, exuding confidence, despite 100 of his own MPs including 11 cabinet minsters telling him to fuck off when ordered to go to R&S.

There you go Mr. Wintour - I've written your central thesis for you for tomorrow's Graun knife job on Miliband. If I can figure out a way to include bigging up brave Nicky Clegg and the Fibs, I'll let you know.

Cameron urging Labour, Liberal Democrats and Greens to vote Conservative to defeat the Purple Shirts was desperation so cynical it betrayed Tory blind panic.

Yes - I've been listening to it. He said Cameron and co will want to say that many Labour voters switched to UKIP and that was what did it .... along with the usual 'it's a by election, they're very unpredictable and often used as a protest, people vote differently at general elections'.

It makes political sense for Cameron to warn of a second crash. They need macroeconomy to be the big issue: http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/20 ... -help-them" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; …
Another point Rafael Behr made on the Westminster Hour ... he said Osborne and others at the Treasury want Cameron to shut up about immigration and focus on the economy which they see as the central issue and centre ground ... that the more Cameron talks about immigration the more he validates UKIP and the more people support them.

Well of course it'll be Miliband's fault rather than Cameron's. It stands to reason doesn't it? If Miliband was any good, then he'd have lost R&S to Labour instead of to a party that has had - and continues to have - absolutely no serious scrtuiny in the meeja. Why would they be interested in doing that? It would simply bring UKIP back down to earth as their fruitcake policies were exposed and how I ask you would restoration of the Labour vs Tory 12015 election sell them papers or get them viewers?

Nah, far better to interfere in the political process by stating that Labour are the one's in meltdown, ignoring Cameron's problems with the Tories - and trust me, they're going to be very, very major indeed as of Friday morning, regardless of the likely and anticipated rescue job by the likes of Wintour and Watt - and failing to pull up UKIP in any way, preferring to buy into the "we're the happy People's Army" bullshit.

I'm pissed off to the back teeth with the sort of treatment that the meeja now dish out to the various parties and I'm very tempted to get back onto Twitter and other outlets to pull the fuckers up about it.

Beside that, I'd liek to echo what Ephe said earlier about the experts and analysts on this forum. When I see a meeja story, I come here first to establish that it's not bullshit. That's how useful this place is. I can't trust most of the meeja but this place is different, and I think it's about time we started advertising the place so any ideas are gratefully received. If any of you have an intro into people with influence (for example, I'll probably be meeting MP Liz McInnes shortly) then let them know of FTN and the sterling work it does.

Let's face it, if a piece of shit like Guido "Paul stains the world of politics" Fawkes right wing troll fest can become a 'goto' political website, then anything is, literally, possible...

Think you will find more respected sources have been saying the same for a number of months.

Let the good times roll!
Cue "Well, it's like this...we need to make more cuts" in the Autumn Statement.

And "The economy is too fragile to let Labour ruin it again" next year.

Some interesting results in there:
An exclusive poll by Survation suggests as many as a quarter of a million people believe their relationship with a friend or family member has been permanently damaged as a result of the run-up to September 18.
and
The poll also shows if there was a referendum today, Scots would vote against it for a second time.

It found 44 would vote Yes and 49 per cent, No. If you strip out the seven per cent not sure, that means 53 per cent No and 47 per cent Yes.

We have a serious article on another world economic crisis and what do we get? The usual brainless comments about David Cameron!

I don't know why some people bother.

Our Glorious Ronsealed Fishpointer General has written an article in the Guardian.

Is there no beginning to his talents?

It's utter bilge - and "I forged agreements", "I brought leaders together", I, I, I, I, ......zzzzzzzzz.......

Showmaster posted "He's pissed again" which will, no doubt, get modded.

Orwell was right. Permanent fear, permanent crisis........we are at war with..... Cameron's at war with us.

How I despise the ridiculous preening popinjay.
