Good morning.
Daughter home for the weekend but now gone out, wife is upstairs having a nap.
And me, I'm reading a thread about a UK - Japan trade deal that was supposed to be so much better than the EU equivalent.

Re: Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th October 2021
Watched the new Dune film last night that the Guardian's been raving about. Meh. The best thing about it are the space bagpipes. Much like Blade Runner 2049 (same director) it looks nice but the pacing is a total mess and the characters are so unnuterably bland that it's difficult to care what happens to any of them. Lynch's version might be an insane mess but at least it's entertaining, this new one's just boring, even the set and ship designs are dull. If I could sum it up in one word it would be 'beige' and that's not just because of all the sand.
Anyway nice to see CJA making an appearance and now I'm off to Tesco to buy some cardboard vegetables.

I feel a bit distressed about this general increase in appalling/antisocial behaviour. Is there something tangible one can do?https://www.theguardian.com/money/2021/ ... -lockdowns
Hostility towards customer-facing staff has continued even though we’re out of lockdown,” said ICS chief executive Jo Causon. “Around half of employees don’t report hostility because they don’t think it will make any difference. They don’t think the police will act, and they feel it is part of their job to receive abuse.”

The NHS has also been affected. GPs and receptionists warned this month that many are quitting over abuse from patients, while NHS trusts are concerned that many A&E staff are considering moving to less stressful roles because of hostility.

I guess it's the manifestation of the glorious amalgamation of decades of (mean) reality tv, a rampant culture of individualism, a right-wing oriented social media https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... ws-outlets and the BBC having approached "balanced" as meaning that "all views are equal, regardless of the actual body of evidence supporting said views".

Re: Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th October 2021
I'm always a bit sceptical about claims that the public have suddenly become arseholes. They've always been arseholes. I worked on the tills in the Co-op in the late Eighties and had to deal with arseholes all the time. We'd have groups of what would later be called chavs coming in trying to steal booze and when we kicked them out we'd get punched, spat on and bricks through the windows. Ordinary customers were routinely rude, stupid and unpleasant. I worked there through 6'th form, so 16 to 18 and it was the beginning of my long descent from youthful idealism to cynical misanthropy.tinyclanger2 wrote: ↑Sat 23 Oct, 2021 4:50 pm I feel a bit distressed about this general increase in appalling/antisocial behaviour. Unfortunately the sad truth is a significant minority of humans are arseholes. They always have been and always will be. All any society can do is attempt to mitigate for it. You can try harsher measures as Blair did with ASBOs, but as your post suggests it doesn't seem to have solved the problem.
The only way to deal with it effectively would be to selectively breed humans to become more convivial and empathetic, or identify the genes associated with whatever traits we desire and begin genetically manipulating foetuses en masse. However I can't imagine either of those would go down very well (and rightly so).
As AK said above I think the best we can do is try not to be arseholes ourselves. Which I have to admit can be a bit difficult at times.

Anyone else been watching Paris Police 1900 on BBC4? It's really good. Grim, violent, racist, it certainly doesn't portray La Belle Epoch in a good light. I love it.

Apart from the actor playing the young detective. His acting talents appear to be restricted to a single facial expression. Which is one of being in mild to moderate pain, likely of a gastric origin, probably trapped wind.

Returning briefly back to covid:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/ ... -to-thrive
With Covid cases rising, the effectiveness of the government’s plan A – relying on vaccination to allow society to function without restraint – appears to be waning fast. Ministers are now under enormous pressure to adopt some of the measures it outlined in its plan B – compulsory masks, vaccine passports for crowded indoor settings such as nightclubs, and encouraging people to work from home.

Hardly a fair comparison, Consuelo Valdés Chadwick is an actual archeologist, whereas Nadine Dorries thinks archeology is the study of arches.

To be honest that looks pretty expensive to me, there's no way I'm paying a fiver for a bit of fried fish so my first thought would be the saveloy. However saveloys can be dodgy so I'd probably err on the side of caution and go jumbo sausage. It would depend on how much it resembled a horse's willy.
