The response from Yorkshire CC doesn't surpise me at all. 'Paki' is common parlance in Yorkshire. As an outsider coming from the North East I have to say the level of overt, casual racism you get down here is absolutely shocking. As is the attitude that it's all just a bit of banter and anyway isn't paki just short for Pakistani? It's like they're proud of it.

I'm not so sure it's about the optics. The problem Paterson has is it seems plenty of Tory MPs like him about as much as we do and he's not part of Johnson's loyal clique of untouchables.
