Interesting stuff at Indie Livethread -
Another -The government has reportedly rented thousands of units of storage space in China for up to 1.6 billion items of unused PPE.
Ministers have admitted that public funds have been used to rent 9,512 storage containers – containing billions of masks, gowns, and gloves – since the start of the pandemic, according to the Mirror.

A corporate boss who advises the government on “levelling up” the north of England is moving hundreds of jobs abroad.
Nestle's UK CEO Stefano Agostini, a member of the UK Investment Council, is overseeing the closure of its confectionery factory in Newcastle.
About 475 jobs will be moved to Czech Republic, Poland, and Bulgaria, the Mirror reports.
Another 98 staff will go at Nestle’s KitKat factory in York.
The GMB union’s northern senior organiser Chris Jukes said: “It’s staggering hypocrisy from the Government.
“Levelling up is not what Agostini is doing in Newcastle.”

Good to know that Harry Redknapp (sp?) has so much in common with the Conservative Party.

https://www.independent.co.uk/independe ... 2018e4e92c" The EU meanwhile twice offered the UK a SPS agreement like the EU has with many other countries that can reduce the required customs checks with up to 80%, the UK twice rejected it.
The EU also offered that if GB sellers put a "NI only" label on their products that only go to NI, these can be exempted from customs checks provided such shipments are entered into a database to which the EU has realtime access. The UK rejected that too "

Good morning.
An expert on Government structures is somewhat unimpressed with the PM's latest.
Gotta love this one...

we have to assume PM had though[t] through all these questions before he decided that this was the structure he wanted

"Camilla WILL be queen" - looks like this is another sign (like Andy being totally cut loose) of the current monarch's influence finally waning.
Its Charles and William who are increasingly calling the shots now.

Good morfternoon.
If, from the outset, I could see that as an obvious problem, you'd have hoped that the Chancellor would have been able to.Thousands of tenants in England could miss out on council tax cut
Rishi Sunak’s rebate plan is a blunt tool to tackle a complex issue, say thinktanks and MPs (Observer)
Re: Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th February 2022
If the government is willing to spend money to temporarily reduce council tax I don't understand why they wouldn't equally be willing to spend money to temporarily reduce VAT on energy - which would much more directly address the issue in a far more straightforward way. If you ask me, the benefit to landlords was a draw not an overlooked problem.PorFavor wrote: ↑Sun 06 Feb, 2022 3:37 pm Good morfternoon.

Ok so I've got a cold, it's not too bad just your usual snots and coughs and sneezes. I tested myself yesterday with a lateral flow test because I had a friend visiting today and it was negative. So just a cold.
I just want to say comparing this cold to Covid is like comparing a monkey to the eruption of Krakatoa.
They're not remotely the same thing.

A thread in which tedious right wing student thanks journalist for printing a story claiming that no in-person lectures...and a couple of Profs pop by to say that it's bollocks...Portes took her to task on this elsewhere as well.

It's in the Conservative Party's "gift". But the best choice of the timing of Boris Johnson's going might differ between the various leadership contenders. And we, and they, won't know who the list of contenders is until . . .
