From sky last night, he must have seen that tweet.
there are no alt-right panelists on to explain why Russia invading Ukraine is all the fault of 'woke' lefties in favour of LGBT rights, which appears to be their preferred narrative this evening.

Of course Russia is still likely to "win" this war, but already it seems fairly clear its not going as smoothly for them as they expected.

Putin apparently appealing to Ukrainian forces to stop fighting, would he be saying this if a hoped for quick clean victory was going to plan?

Should we be concerned that Johnson's Russian is good enough to do this? Alternatively, maybe it isn't and he'll make a complete fool of himself.
Not a great look either way, imo.

This war is shining a bright light on the really, really bad place the UK is in.

Immigration paranoia extends to potential UKR refugees.

And the tory party is hopelessly compromised by its blatant entanglement with the very top of the Russian state.

Thanks everyone. Hard to keep reading the news in recent days/last couple of years/etc so massively appreicate the insights i get from the nest.

Never expected that the 70s/80s would look like eutopia but here we are.

The news services (notably the BBC but far from just them) really noticeably went downhill after the Tories regained power in 2010.

It's starting to feel a bit like we (which I mean in the broadest possible sense globally) somehow squandered democracy in general. Possibly by focusing too much attention on (in the UK at least) fire pits, patios and (culinary) foams.

Good evening.

Still with gout and not in great shape I did go for a swim which relieves the pressure on my back but we've had a look to see what I can/can't eat and well, let's just say bread and water looks favourite...

A blog from Lawrence Freedman. And yes, that comment about Putin having to implore Ukranian military to overthrow their own government doesn't indicate that it's all going to plan.

Good morfternoon.

I fervently hope that, in tonight's vote, China, even if it's only in its own self-interest, opts to play both ends against the middle and abstains.

The Royal Opera House have cancelled a tour from Russia’s Bolshoi Ballet following the invasion of Ukraine.
The Moscow-based ballet company, who were set to return to London this summer, has been called off as Kyiv was hit by air strikes and Russian fighters closed in on Kyiv. In a statement, the Royal Opera House said: “A summer season of the Bolshoi Ballet at the Royal Opera House had been in the final stages of planning. “Unfortunately, under the current circumstances, the season cannot now go ahead.”

Putin has got so high on his own supply, its far from inconceivable that he expected Russian troops would be welcomed as liberators.

@gilsey

Yes. I consider China's abstention is a bit of a result. But India (our mate Modi) . . .? And we're also quite fond of the UAE.
