Oh dear. Just done a ring-around of the really hardcore eurosceptics. They’re not happy and threatening trouble http://specc.ie/1xZyWCs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They were never going to be happy were they ... surely everyone knew that.

Dave might just be realising that chasing the Ukip boat is futile - utterly futile - and he needs to keep some kind of safe, and not wince making embarrassing, avenue open re Europe.
You could see his speech as being reasonably realistic. A fair bit of his reforms are probably in the pipeline anyway- the richer countries don't like paying benefits to migrants.

He's just stuck with a stupid party, who he's failed to control.
Exactly it's a gross failure of leadership. He's W E A K. Passable in a schoolboy debate but utterly lacking in leadership skills.

And I still can't quite believe he says a key negotiating point is something Angela Merkel says is non-negotiable. Talk about picking your fights.

They are very definitely a stupid party - wish they weren't quite so destructive with it. Benign and stupid - OKish (not necessarily in govt) but nasty and stupid, definitely not.

Interesting that Cameron indicated some of his proposals would need treaty changes ... I wonder if the other European members will see it the same way. You're right about some of the richer countries also having issues - the report on WATO from Denmark bears that out ... they spoke to people there who didn't want immigrants to have any rights to benefits at all.

I want to see a level playing field re employment of unskilled labour in particular. This Mirror report is depressing ... http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/ne ... sh-4709994" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Did Cameron say anything about clamping down on such recruitment practices?

Dave's speech put me in mind of a saying, something about labouring mightily and bringing forth a mouse.
Hardly enough in it to justify the buildup.

Btw, I've been into town this pm for an eye test, was hoping to report that Black Friday had passed Middlesbrough by, but sadly not.

The next of those Leaders Live sessions is with Nigel Farage. His chosen topics are the EU, democracy and immigration. No surprise there then.

Now the young audience, internetters get to choose the 4th topic. So if you are, or know someone, aged 16 to 24 who wants to give Nigel something a bit more challenging and challengeable for him to respond to you can vote for the 4th topic here:

David Cameron has taken a stiff Twitter jab to the chin after the Czech Republic's Europe Minister responded to the PM’s immigration speech by posting a picture of Czech pilots serving in the RAF during the Second World War.
Tomas Prouza posted the picture on Friday, having been upset by Cameron’s suggestion that EU immigrants should only be allowed to claim welfare after they had been in the UK for four years.
He responded by posting the following tweet, with the words: "These Czechs 'worked' in the #UK for less than four years. No benefits for them?"

I'd be tempted to choose 'workers' rights', since our departure from the EU would see the absolute destruction of them in the UK.

Would probably be a bit of an eye opener for the 'people's army' to learn how much UKIP hate wroking people's rights...

How Osborne watered down his deficit reduction vote
The Chancellor has shifted his focus from an absolute surplus to a current surplus.

http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/20 ... ction-vote
No Autumn Statement or Budget passes without George Osborne laying a trap for Labour. Delivering the former on Wednesday, Osborne the Chancellor is expected to announce plans to stage a vote on his pledge to eliminate the structural current deficit by 2017-18. The aim is to force Labour, which has promised to eradicate the current deficit by 2020 at the latest (giving it more flexibility than Osborne), to oppose the commitment and be exposed as fiscally "irresponsible". Osborne hopes to persuade the Lib Dems, who support the 2017-18 target but want tax rises to play a continued role in deficit reduction, to join forces with the Tories, reanimating the two-against-one dynamic that enabled the coalition to trash Labour's economic record in the months after the 2010 general election...
It's just depressing ... this constant point scoring and dodgy tactics that takes up so much of the time and resources of our government and parliament ... paid for by us mere plebs.

You'd like to think the Lib Dems might just rise above this one ... and refuse to do the deal. But I doubt it ... some of them still have eyes on power post 2015 no doubt.

Oh look! Blackburn planning a new Workhouse.
"It was bought by Blackburn with Darwen Council and now the borough is poised to sell it to a Lancashire-based charity which helps 'marginalised people back into stable, independent living'.
The charity's associated social enterprise will run the site as a recycling centre for items such as metal, scrap cars, tyres, plastics, TVs and redundant household items for sale.
The money raised from the recycling operation will help provide the homeless and others on the margins of society with training, education, work experience and employment

A rose by any other name an all that.

Welcome back to the 19th century - just as the Tories want it.

The odd thing is, if most people read that article, they wouldn't make the connection to the Poor Laws and workhouses of Victorian England unless you damn well pointed it out to them.

I have gone in with a two footed challenge, if anybody else still bothers with it I would encourage them to have a go. Don't let the buggers re-write history.

Despite the fact it keeps the story alive, it's actually pretty sympathetic to all parties and paints a very different picture of her than the bullshit the meeja have dispensed so far. One point chimed big with me: she's an effective left wing MP - they had to get rid of her by any means. I just hope that Miliband will have the guts to say fuck it, she's too good to sideline and is where we're at as a party (and then lay into the Oxbridge educted meeja that promulgated the storm).

The only thing about the original Thornbury photo was that it laid itself open to wide interpretation.

And weren't the Oxbridge educated, over privileged, overpaid, unconnected Westminster fixated hacks quick to prove that it was actually them, and not her, who are the snobs, as they morphed over their views onto her photo.

Scum. The lot of them.

This is beyond sick, whatever their intentions.
Cheer up (sarcasm, me) - many would understand straight away ('up to 10 otherwise homeless people would live at the site under supervision'!?!) 'otherwise homeless' people are being considered "surplus stock" or whatever it is Tories call human beings who aren't friends or family these days.

Thank you! I haven't checked my e-mail today so this is the first I've read of this. And just last night I told ErnstRemarx I'd like to work enthusiastically to support my community. The knock on the door is for you, CitizenJA! Labour needs me!

The first thing I thought of when I saw 'Mobilisation Assistant' was a request for helpers for people with mobility limitations - getting those people places they couldn't get to on their own.

Well in fairness that could be included in election campaigning & job description, finding people who need help getting about and helping them. :)

Probably the best quote I've yet read about the whole Thornberry saga, from someone who I suspect knows what they're actually talking about as opposed to 90% of the BTL on the Graun article:

"Seriously, the whole "incident" was entirely artificial. Why anyone would trust the Tories or the writers of The Sun to know anything about the working class I will never know - unless they imagine that all those journos and sub editors moonlight as brickies or something.

End of the day, the person being criticised was not "the working class", but the kind of guy that most working class people hate just as much as anyone else. There's one on every street or estate but, crucially, there's very rarely MORE than one. When he hangs his flag, people don't follow suit. It's not because they're too scared of the PC thugs; it's because they think he's an asshole and want nothing to do with him."

Er, yeah. That nails it. Nothing more remains to be said - I see exactly this when out door knocking. You see an England flag flying in the front garden or off a window and you quickly realise that, World Cup or not, you're just about to have a very unfulfilling conversation - if they can be arsed to answer the door, which frequently they're not.

I'm afraid I've seen it more times than I feel comfortable with, and it tells me that either some people are irredeemably thick or else the lumpen proletariat (thiose Marx saw as uninvolved and uninterested in politics) has - as it ever has - a sizeable vote.

Either way, I don't buy the meeja's bullshit on this. Every last journalist writing about it would avoid that house and its inhabitants like the fucking plague, and everyone knows it, since they are of exactly the same class of people as the politicians that they slag off - although some are actually posher and richer, which makes them even better shills for the rich, moneyed and influential, for whom they draw their pay.

To mobilise and support the Labour Party’s members and supporters in campaigning in the run up to the next General Election.

That's the thing about community, society, civilisation - cooperative effort with all the people is required to get a task successfully completed.

Nah, you are too charitable, they are lining this up for a pop at Ed for sacking her. Don't forget the Guardians role in this.

Crikey, Cameron in that speech.

Pumped up, talking out of his arse, and furiously backpedalling, all at the same time.
