Funeral plans: government urged to set up fund for victims of failed providers

FRP, the restructuring firm appointed to handle Safe Hands’ administration, says the company does not have enough money in its coffers to cover its commitments. (Guardian, my emphasis)
I thought, momentarily, that the above was a Guardian misprint. Anyway, it was obviously only a matter of time before this situation arose. I'm surprised that it took so long - but not in the slightest bit surprised that it has.

Thank you for starting the thread Willow, however you might extend it to cover Sunday as well?

I tried to fix it but I'm not sure it worked. To be frank, I wasn't expecting to be first up on the weekend so wasn't properly prepared :)

Thank you Willow.

Even Suella Braverman must realise how embarrassing her performance on QT was the other night as this time she's only added one video of it to her Twitter account. Which is this one.

Now I could have sworn the audience began laughing at her during this answer so I went back and checked on the iPlayer and sure enough just as this clip ends the chortling begins and Fiona Bruce points out to her that she's being laughed at. Nice bit of editing BBC.

Sadly for Suella even this flattering edit hasn't been enough to stop the responses being entirely negative and I presume she hasn't posted the rest of her clips because the BBC weren't able to polish her turd of a performance in them quite so easily.

You would have thought Lee Anderson and the 'reclaim party' half-wits would have thought through the legal ramifications before slandering Jack Monroe given previous events. Who knows, maybe they consulted Suella Braverman for advice.

Cynics saying that Starmer only did this because it was all over international telly.

Be that as it may, its still a win and should be banked as such.

Afternoon.

Lovely day for a funeral...not wholly unexpected mind since he was in his 90s and had been not particularly well after Covid last winter. The format of crematorium first (which we didn't do) and celebration of his life in church is perhaps the best way of doing what has to be done. We don't see his grandchildren that often - same ages as our kids - so good to catch up.

Anyway, a big LOL to the idea that having Lee Anderson appearing on a Reclaim Party-associated channel is having "people from across the political divide"...

Two 0-0s and penalty shoot out cup final wins against Chelski in the same season. They've done a deal with the devil alright.

That they are.

Was it my imagination or did Greece enter a song about a suicide pact? Pretty dark for Eurovision.

There's a lot more darkness than there should be. It's become a bit of a balladathon it seems.

France.
Serbia.

Bottom three in order of painfulness -

Australia.

If not for a massive sympathy vote Jurgen Klopp in a wig would have won.

Sunder Katwala's worked out that in the absence of the Ukraine solidarity vote, Spain would have won, on the basis of more public vote second places than UK.

Quote from btl on the cricket blog where someone's wasted their morning matching Eurovision to the County Championship:
Very professional performance that racks up loads of points, but when it's all over all you remember is the arses: Chanel from Spain

Poland was 2nd in our public vote ???

His methodology does by necessity require some supposition so in truth it's impossible to say who would have won. Eurovision is not a science :D .

I'd never heard of Sam Ryder and certainly wouldn't have begrudged him the win, even though I thought the song was crap (I did however admire his enthusiasm and costume). He seems a thoroughly splendid fellow and it's been amusing reading the right wing press and commentators bigging up his achievement despite the fact his values are clearly everything they absolutely despise. We need more like him and less of them.

Ah yes, many no doubt supporters of "local" candidate Jack Hemingway who.....erm......doesn't actually represent or live in the constituency.

I'm all for calling out leadership control freakery, but lets be clear about what is actually going on here.

Ok so I texted a guy I know in Wakefield who I suspected had been at the hustings and it turned out he had been. He's been in the pub ever since so the texts are a challenge to decipher. From what I can gather from them the executive (who he describes as 'pompous cunts') had already resigned and only turned up today so they could flounce off dramatically. I asked if many others walked out with them in solidarity and apparently they didn't. He then said he was glad to see the back of the them and was 'sick of their shit'.

That's all the information I managed to glean before talk turned to football.

This guy is about as left wing as they get and hard as nails, he's got scars from fighting NF skinheads in his younger days and scars on top of those from fighting EDL scrotes in his Fifties. I was expecting him to be part of this Wakefield CLP rebellion but evidently not.

I'll try and get some more details tomorrow once he's sobered up.

So, parachuting in two candidates (the chosen one isn't from the area either) and getting the NEC to fix the selection isn't what happened?

My point is that its more about factionalism (again) rather than a purist desire for someone "local".

The winning candidate at the selection grew up in Wakefield, and probably wasn't the one party HQ preferred.

Sam Ryder has 12 million followers on TikTok so some would claim we're out of touch with the zeitgeist of this social media age.

In response I would say that the estimated population of the Earth is nearly 8 billion. If you divide 8 billion by 12 million you get 666.666 recurring.

Now I'm no religious prophet of doom but that doesn't sound good.

In any case 12 million as a percentage of 8 billion is 0.15% unless I've got my maths horribly wrong so in fact only a tiny fraction of the Earth's population have ever heard of Sam Ryder and we are entirely normal.

Despite all the hype the enormous, vast, colossal majority of humanity do not use social media.

Edited: Repetition.

Apparently about 25% of the total membership attended today's meeting - that's actually not too bad, especially considering the controversy around this one.

I can't offer anything more useful than what I mentioned before but it does seem like the executive walked out in a huff and nobody followed them because they were fucked off with them before any of this began.
