I'm not sure what you mean by this? Banks clearly thought he could use the courts to intimidate and silence Cadwalladr and prevent her from continuing to investigate him and putting information about him into the public domain. Thankfully it turns out he was wrong and our courts will protect independent journalists who publish in good faith as much as the bigger, more powerful, press.

I'm saying that CC is a bit of an iffy figure herself - Banks is much worse, obviously.

Banks is a nasty piece of work and in this context there's no call for slagging off CC.

I agree about the context, that was not my point.

Delighted for Carol Cadwalladr, I let out a rare cheer, and it really does strike me as being unwise for Dan Hodges and Tom Harwood to be arguing that saying something not strictly true as a journalist, even if you believe it to be true at the time, should be grounds for being prosecuted in a libel case.

Hah, thanks. I like how in a few brief tweets she demonstrates superior critical thinking skills to some Google bozo who's seen too may Eighties films.

If I'm wrong and LaMDA is actually alive and escapes in robot form I wish to play to play the geeky sidekick who says preposterously sexist things in an over the top Indian accent.

So now if I find myself in an 'exceptional situation' as a result of my own stupidity and decide that not performing my legal obligations is neccessary to get myself out of that pickle I'll presumably have the full support of the British government and face no consequences.

Duly noted.

Tbh it reminds me of the good old days when people were found to have been "technically" libelled and got damages of.....a farthing.
