Morning RFM
On theToady programme neither Diana Johnson nor Katya Adler mentioned that Israel had tried the Rwanda wheeze, and failed. Is it some sort of secret, then ?
I spent some lively months digging on Iona nearly sixty years ago . Not far from the abbey there was a reef of whisky bottles .
I remember one young NI seminarian doing a skit on Ian Paisley and his enemy, who he called 'old red socks' -- the Pope. A warning.
Forecast on target so far, a 'cool' 26, and the tide is making so off for a prowl in the sea before it gets hot.
41 later, and what is worse a very hot night .

Take care everyone .

Denmark are also pushing a Rwanda policy similar to ours, and also don't seem to be making much progress.

Good morning.

So Sunak and Truss pull out, and Sky cancel the debate as a result.

Country (and Tory Central Office) breathe a sigh of relief.

Oh dear...from the Graun.
The Penny Mordaunt campaign has said a statement on the cancellation of the Sky News debate released earlier, which blamed Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss for not being able to debate each other “in a civil way” (see 11.13am), was sent out in error. It has retracted that statement, and instead issued this comment which does not not criticise her rivals.

It seems the UK might just fall short of 40C today, tomorrow may be a different matter.

Well, that didn't take long...

Kemi Badenoch backs net zero in Tory leadership climate U-turn

https://www.theguardian.com/environment ... ate-u-turn
Kemi Badenoch has backed the government’s target of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and vowed not to unpick current climate commitments in an apparent U-turn at the Tory leadership environment hustings.

The MP for Saffron Walden had previously likened the target to “unilateral economic disarmament” but under questioning from Alok Sharma, the Cop26 president, at the hustings in parliament on Monday she said she backed it.
I would imagine the enthusiasm for her might start waning amongst the very-vocal Tory right...

I am now going to hand over the controls seamlessly to someone else.

I don’t know who, but whoever it is, I can tell you this, I can reassure you of this, that the great Rolls-Royce twin engines of this Conservative government will roar on. Fantastic public services. A dynamic free market economy. Each boosting the other and developing, what’s the word I want, millions of tons of trust.

my thermometer is stuck at 39C, and it's going to be a horrible night for people in uninsulated modern buildings, flats etc . My bedroom is warm as the heat eventually gets through a foot of packed cellulose , so i'll be downstairs in relative cool of 24.....

We had a little bit of cloud cover this pm in the South West so peaked around 34°C in the end, which was just about bearable for us but quite hot enough according to two slightly grumpy cats. I'm not looking forward to tonight, though, as our west facing dormer traps the heat in the bedrooms upstairs (whilst also letting in all the cold draughts in the winter). There are loads of 70s chalet style semis like ours up and down the country which could do with a green makeover. It's not just about the money, though, but how to do it, I don't know how to go about it and I don't trust the average cowboy builder to advise me either.

Ouch for Penny Farthing, actually going down in MPs at this stage is not good.

Assuming that Badenoch goes out next, her votes could yet get Truss over the top.
