In 1969/70 Barry O'Brien of the DT wrote a two page spread on 1500 students rioting at the Uni of Essex . It was a strike, there were some twenty activists occupying the Students Union . My English sister wrote saying that Hunt looked OK, so I told her to do a bit of research, she swiftly found this long catalogue of sabotage of the NHS ,
Just one example of the whole near-criminal opus …

Just one example of the whole near-criminal opus …
So they flogged off whatever assets they could, cut maintenance budgets etcetc ...” Hospitals now receive on average 10% less for treating a patient than the treatment actually costs the hospital (by the admission of the head of the then regulator, Ian Dalton). And when cash-strapped hospitals missed financial and performance targets that the Public Accounts Committee said were ‘unrealistic’, they were fined, something that – unsurprisingly – has been shown to do nothing to improve performance.
Hunt’s response was to send out “failure is not an option” missives to hapless local NHS executives, instructing them (on pain of having their entire board suspended) to clear their financial shortfalls, while making sure they did so “without compromising patient care”. So that’s all right then! ”

On the English addiction to fining ( do you remember Blair’s on the spot fines for impecunious drunks ?) , I asked my teacher daughter if she knew of a French equivalent to this —

Yes, and also that they never actually happened.
That's the difference between then and now, for all Noo Labour's media fixation and attraction to gimmicks they did also put *some* weight on actual evidence.

On a more serious note, surely they have to find someone who's prepared to stick with *unt as Cx, given the commitment for a financial statement on 31/10. Might narrow the field a bit.

Her leadership campaign will turn out to have lasted longer than her premiership, assuming a replacement does take office before the end of the month.

Re: Thursday 20th October 2022
If they've learned anything from this and there's any sanity left in the Tory party they'll fix the contest so that the candidate with the most support in the parliamentary party (which is Sunak by a mile) ends up unopposed after the rest have been forced to drop out. They shouldn't even have a confirmatory ballot of their members because the mad bastards might rebel and leave the party ungovernable and facing an inevitable general election.
As for the Johnson cultists getting all excited, yes please do bring back the lying sack of shit who had to resign in disgrace after promoting a sex pest and lying about it and who's still facing a standards committee investigation for lying to parliament. See where it gets you. outside the Tory membership his approval ratings were nearly as bad as those of Liz Truss. I would imagine he's Labour's preferred candidate.

So I guess the question is can Johnson get the nominations of 100 MPs? I'm really not sure. It seems unlikely unless Nadine Dorries becomes a master of disguise and votes 50 times, but anything's possible at this stage.

Re: Thursday 20th October 2022
What would be really funny is Johnson wins the leadership contest but loses so many MPs to defections and resignations that he immediately faces a Labour no-confidence vote and ends up getting thumped in the GE that occurs as a result.
Re: Thursday 20th October 2022
There is some sort of conspiracy of silence to NOT describe him as " the disgraced former PM" .Sky'sGoneOut wrote: ↑Thu 20 Oct, 2022 7:06 pm What would be really funny is Johnson wins the leadership contest but loses so many MPs to defections and resignations that he immediately faces a Labour no-confidence vote and ends up getting thumped in the GE that occurs as a result.

Re: Thursday 20th October 2022
The QT audience was asked if they wanted a general election. 95% of them said yes, there were literally about 5 or 6 people saying no. Half the audience voted Tory at the last election. If the Conservatives think they can defy that level of public disquiet for the next 18 months while simultaneously regaining support they're living in cloud cuckoo land.
As for Johnson coming back the idea was about as popular as a dose of the clap, only two people were prepared to say they supported him. One of whom seemed a bit slow, while the other got laughed at.
No review tonight because I'm (unfortunately) stone cold sober but if you want to watch it on telly later Camilla Cavendish is excellent.

Re: Thursday 20th October 2022
The arrogance of these tories is astonishing, Sunak/Johnson really think they can turn things round before a GE?
Learn from history, Major had 5 reasonably successful years and still didn't turn it round.
Can't understand why Sunak in particular would want to do it.
