Ed Miliband - 11 December 2014

"Two thirds of people moving into work are paid less than the living wage....totally undermined the government's deficit plan. Last week, the Office of Budget Responsibility confirmed that income tax and national insurance receipts are £43 billion a year lower than forecast in 2010. Sixty percent of the drop in tax receipts in the last year is because of weaker wage growth. And it is set to get worse as wage growth has been revised down until 2017. Exactly the same pattern as we saw under the Tories in the 1980s. This time, higher tax credit bills and higher housing benefit bills subsidising a low wage economy....successful deficit reduction strategy depends upon reform of our economy. That is the biggest lesson of the failures of this government.

Productive investment in our infrastructure should be seen differently from day to day spending because it often has a greater economic return. Indeed, the history of our country has been a failure to invest in our infrastructure and our economic foundations, which are so important for competitiveness, growth and tax revenues....an economy based on high wages and high skills, common sense spending reductions and fair choices on tax. This draws the right distinction between current and capital spending.

...reforming the banks, transforming vocational education, a revolution in apprenticeships, helping nurture the businesses of tomorrow: all are part of building the economy we need to both deliver for working people... Unless we fundamentally reshape our economy, we will only ever be able to compensate people for unfairness and inequality....we have a different economic strategy building a higher wage, higher skill economy, not the low wage, low skill economy we have. Putting our young people back to work will improve tax revenues and cut the social security bill. Raising the minimum wage will do the same. So will dealing with the scandal of zero-hours contracts and ensuring people have more regular hours.

...those with the broadest shoulders bear the greatest burden so that we can meet our mission of a country that works for working people. And we will also need to do a lot more to tackle one of the biggest scandals in our country: tax avoidance by some multinational firms.

This is what I mean by fairer, different choices so we can build a fairer, more equal country...we are determined to do everything we can to protect everyday taxpayers from bearing an increased burden and to do all we can to protect public services...those who have done best, under this government and indeed under the last, must pay their fair share....we must pull together as a society not drift apart and we cannot do that if deficit reduction is simply on the backs of everyday people.

This government famously claimed that we were all in it together. The reality has been completely the opposite.

..the Conservative Party has pledged to make tax cuts when they have absolutely no idea how they will fund them. This year, they have asked families with children to contribute five times more to deficit reduction than the banks. And now for the future, theirs is the only deficit reduction plan in history which seems to involve asking the wealthy to pay nothing more.Tax cuts that will cost over £7 billion a year at the end of the Parliament. And even more, £16 billion a year, if they happen earlier in the Parliament. The Tories cannot say how they would fund their tax cuts skewed to help the wealthiest. This is not responsible and not right. And the British people should be in no doubt what the Tory promise means: they will pay the price for tax cuts one way or another.

They will pay the price in higher VAT or even bigger cuts to public services. We already know from this Parliament what that means: a low wage, low skill economy, falling tax revenues and higher social security bills. So we know what the result will be: the Tories might be able to deliver the cuts they have promised, but they won't be able to cut the deficit as they promised. I want the British people to know what this really means: it is a recipe for the disintegration of our public services...a permanent cost of living crisis because we won't be investing in the skills, infrastructure and education we need for good quality jobs."

Firstly, repeats of Q are as rare as hen's teeth.
Secondly, as surreal as it is, it will probably still make more sense than the babblings of Farage and Brand.
Having spotted the parallel myself some time ago, I am hugely gratified to note that if you enter "Russell Brand Waldo" into Twitter, loads of others have observed that Brand is little more than Waldo from "Black Mirror" made flesh. Only with a thesaurus and an incredibly irritating habit of turning up on Match of the Day.

It's all too close for comfort, isn't it? Ed's integrity and ability seem obvious to me but then I'm rarely in tune with the public at large. I wasn't keen on Blair and he won with a landslide and I rather liked Brown and he lost. Which doesn't auger well I'm afraid!

I really would like to see what kind of PM Ed would make though. His detractors have made me waiver on occasion but then David Owen gave up his position as a cross-bench peer in order to donate to his campaign, an endorsement I don't take lightly as I have always admired David Owen's commitment to social democrat principles, especially the way he fought against the Health and Social Care Act in the Lords. It made me hopeful that Ed Miliband really could be the person to take this country in a different direction.

Breaking: Homeowners burn through £24m Green Deal vouchers in one day
http://m.businessgreen.com/bg/news/2386 ... in-one-day
Solid wall insulation element of £30m Home Improvement Fund closes but consumers can still apply for other energy efficiency measures
Just a day after re-opening its popular Green Deal Home Improvement Fund (GDHIF) the government has been forced to close applications to a £24m pot allocated for solid wall insulation, following a rush of applications.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) yesterday launched a second phase of the GDHIF, offering households up to £5,600 for certain energy savings measures. Of the £30m budget, £24m was earmarked for solid-wall insulation projects and the remaining £6m for households installing selected energy efficiency upgrades, such as double glazing, boilers, cavity wall and floor insulation.
BusinessGreen enquired this morning about the uptake of the scheme and was told by a spokeswoman that DECC was unable to release an update. But hours later DECC issued a statement, confirming that all £24m worth of solid wall insulation vouchers have now been allocated...

Interesting article ... although I can't claim to understand much about the back history of the companies / developers involved here. But - the bit detailing the Guardian's involvement is a bit of a shocker - and the general smear tactics being deployed are also good to have spelled out so plainly.

It's that time of the week when I put the plexiglass shield in front of the telly and wait for my eyes and ears to be ill down my face. Which is to say, Question Time - not just Farage and Brand but Mordaunt and Camilla Cavendish as well. I can't help but feel for Mary Creagh who will probably spend most of the time being aggressively shouted over in between being aggressively told to detail the cuts she favours. Apparently, the Sparrow's doing a liveblog.

Anyhoo, my weekly rant is here:

http://onebuttonmonkey.com/obm/2014/12/ ... rbury.html

Other than that, it's probably best I don't go on about the speech today, as I know I'm to the left of some - it's old ground, and while the speech omitted a fair bit of detail that I might have been more angry about, my early fury hasn't entirely ebbed away. All I wanted to say is that while fewer cuts are better than more cuts, what we're looking at is a difference of degree, not type. My problem is, primarily, one of type. That's one of the reasons I was so sad to see a general retreat from challenging the austerity-is-the-only-choice myth, and am so very glum about next May. Anyway, feel free to look the other way when I'm moaning about the shadow front bench in the tirade about BBCQT. I try and keep the thing on an equal-opportunities-insultant basis as a feeble attempt at scathing socialist impartiality.

Mansion Tax (And additional Stamp Duty Tax, thank you Mr Osborne)

"Bankers" bonuses. How someone is determined as a 'banker' in law is still a mystery to me. Does this include Hedge Fund Managers? Pension funds? Ethical investors in developing African States? I guess it will be a more general tax on ex gratia payments and performance related bonuses over a certain amount regardless of what the individual actually does for a living.

Bringing back the 50% tax band.

The rest of the financial strategy seems to be aimed at cutting departments slowly, and looking at cuts on a year by year basis rather than the short sharp shock of the Coalition, and hoping that investment in education and skills reaps tax receipts high enough to close the deficit.

Much as I would love it to be the case, I'm not convinced that that's enough for a five year programme, and the more I hear the above 'tinkerings' mentioned, the more I think that there's not much left in the cupboard.
I think there is more than that. It is highly significant IMO that Labour are only saying they will match Tory spending plans for *one* year - and Balls seems, happily, to have resurrected the "borrow to invest" option that appeared to have been junked in his ill-starred conference speech.

Make no mistake, things will be difficult if Labour win next year - but they can still make a difference in all sorts of ways.

Let's not forget that the Attlee government also had "no money".
I know you weren't pushing the Attlee comparison too far, but modern demographics are a big impediment to anything like that. Not just in Britain, everywhere.

A Christmas carol: Will the Ministry of Justice appeal the prison book ban ruling?
http://www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2014/12 ... eal-the-pr
There is one idea at the heart of the Ministry of Justice policies and our approach to prison at Christmas. It's about whether we give up on people. Of course, many people behind bars have committed terrible crimes. Others have committed lots of minor crimes. Some have even committed victimless crimes. Whichever category they fall into, cutting them off from society leaves them with nothing to lose. And people with nothing to lose only go downwards. It's investment – in family, training, education and work - which gives people the reasons to stop committing crime.

Removing books from prisoners, forcing them to wear dirty underwear, making it expensive to stay in contact with their families – this is a dehumanisation process. It is giving up on people. It's this kind of attitude that leads the justice secretary to describe a 69% rise in prison suicides as a "blip".

Home Office granted citizenship to people with 'very poor immigration histories'
Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration warns there are no checks for good character before British citizenship decisions

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/ ... ories.html
The reports were delivered to the Home Office several months ago, but published on the day of two major speeches by the Prime Minister and the Labour leader Ed Miliband.
Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, accused Mrs May of burying “bad news”...
I heard her response to being asked why she had delayed publication of the inspector's reports for so long ... as many as 10 reports held up by her apparently ... and never happened before as the Inspector previously published his / her own reports as and when they were ready. To say she was unconvincing is a gross understatement ... weasel words and prevarication. Hallmarks of this government. If we don't like what it says ... deny it, withold it, delay it, say we don't believe it, don't recognise it, ... any number of excuses ... all amounting to big squirrels.

I remember they tried to create a sense of gross scandal when Burnham wanted the CQC not to drop bombshell reports without the NHS having time to think about them.

Yet in other areas it's perfectly OK for inspectors to have their reports kept on the minister's desk for months.

Mind says back-to-work scheme is not suitable
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-30421799
... Mind says 5% of people on the Work Programme in Wales with a mental health condition found work, compared with 21% of people with no problems.

It wants a separate, specialist scheme, saying the current one is ineffective...

A DWP spokeswoman said: "Mind are overlooking the fact that previous jobs schemes simply didn't do enough for people with mental health conditions.
..
"It has already helped thousands of people with mental health conditions into work, instead of just writing people off on sickness benefits as often happened in the past."...

The free market isn't free. Its cost is measured in human despair and truncated lives. That we have a situation in one of the richest economies in the world where people, including children, do not have enough to eat, is nothing short of a crime. Jeepers. Listening the weather assault that's just started outside .......... rain lashing down on the veluxes and wind whipping around the roof ........................... and we're supposed to be outside the worst areas ... supposed to be anyway.

I think it will be an early morning walk down the track tomorrow to check if anything is down before I drive anywhere.

Unless they are Tory politicians in which case anything goes. Frankly IDS deserves the very worst treatment that can be devised.

Sorry. I'm assuming - from the NoMorePage3 source - that this vile clip is from the Sun.

Evening folks,
Interesting cartoon in the latest Eye. Entitled "Paedophile Shock", it features a police lineup of 'the usual suspects', including a judge, tv person, a pop singer, a bishop, a politician, a police and a man wearing a crown....

Further comment is probably best given a body swerve.

@Trumpton_UKIP any chance that you could stop tweeting? You're being really disrespectful to our party. Please stop.

Best thing I've read all week. The Trumpton Tweets are really funny. Looks like taking the wee works.

There's a bandstand in Neath, in the gardens by the bus station and library, in a corner there is a stone with the names of 5 men who died in the Spanish Civil War, young men who died fighting hatred, now there is a UKIPNeath, I am ashamed, on the upside I hope to bump into them on my travels one day, I am not a gobby person in real life, but when something needs saying I will, let one of them cross my path or knock my door. I relish the prospect.
