“The consultation clearly shows that there is a huge scepticism about the ISDS instrument,” Cecilia Malmstrom, the EU Trade Commissioner, admitted yesterday. “We need to have an open and frank discussion about investment protection and ISDS in TTIP with EU governments, the European Parliament and civil society before launching any policy recommendations.”
How do you have an open and frank discussion about something that is being negotiated secretly?
Precisely!

Heard that - and said to myself - 'well they would, wouldn't they?'. And shortly afterwards the interviewer said that Labour categorically denied it.

Who knows what UKIP class as 'talking to them'. Standing next to each other at the HoC or Reform Club urinals and passing the time of day?

Two comments to make - Bury North is closer than it looks, but I suspect we'll win it, even if our candidate is a complete twat, and Heywood and Middleton - no, UKIP won't take it. By elections are *not* like general elections. In a by, you can indulge a flight of fancy, safe inthe knowledge it won't affect the government (except in terms of morale, perhaps); in a general election you're electing your MP for the next 4-5 years, and thus protest votes are less evident.

That's why even the current (approx) 16-18% for UKIP is probably bollocks - expect something more like 9-12% in May.

We really need to get this changed. Try the SNP too.
Mr Johnson said: " Under autumn statement plans, Conservatives could be cutting unprotected budgets by 26% after 2015-16, or an extraordinary 41% over the whole period from 2010.
"Even merely to meet their more modest fiscal target, these budgets would need to be cut by more than 15% after 2015-16. Labour would need to implement cuts of only 3%.
"All of this, of course, points to another big difference. If Labour is spending more - and if it doesn't raise taxes - it will be borrowing more and, perhaps more important, presiding over a greater burden of debt.
"The effect of this might be relatively modest in the short term, but borrowing as much as their rule would allow beyond 2020 would mean national debt about £170 billion higher (in today's terms) by the end of the 2020s than would be achieved through a balanced budget.
"So, even if Labour does keep spending cuts to a minimum over the next parliament, further tax increases or spending cuts might prove necessary down the line to reduce risks with the long-term state of the public finances further."

That sums up what Lucas has fallen to.

Less truthful than the Daily Mail.

I am depressed.

Please note: anybody emoji hugging me will get slapped.
To be fair, Ed Balls said at the Conference no new borrowing for investment. Looks like someone had a word, and now they're all talking about current spending. So you can understand Lucas thinking policy as it was.

But very clearly, there was no vote on "£30bn cuts" yesterday.

House price annual inflation was 10.4% in England, 3.1% in Wales, 4.4% in Scotland and 11.7% in Northern Ireland.

House prices continue to increase strongly across the majority of the UK, with prices in London again showing the highest growth.

Annual house price increases in England were driven by an annual increase in London of 15.3% and to a lesser extent increases in the East (11.9%) and the South East (10.8%).

Excluding London and the South East, UK house prices increased by 7.1% in the 12 months to November 2014.

In November 2014, prices paid by first-time buyers were 11.0% higher on average than in November 2013. For owner-occupiers (existing owners), prices increased by 9.5% for the same period.
(my bold)

This isn't a good thing. At all. How much did wages increase? Osborne was crowing this morning about benefits of low inflation (deflation)?

I'm much more worried by the lack of ability to see that it's wrong for any politician to be influencing / demanding which party or parties are represented and how during an election campaign. It should be a decision taken away from political influence - surely that's what press impartiality, balance and freedom is all about. I don't like any of these demands - regardless of where they emanate from. Legally challenge the Ofcom decision if you want to ... that seems fair process ... but don't pressurise broadcasters or ask other political parties to pressurise broadcasters.

Oil price crash threatens the future of the North Sea oilfields
Scottish government pledges to try to preserve offshore energy sector jobs, with prices having fallen 60% in the last six months

http://www.theguardian.com/business/201 ... -oilfields
But I thought the Scottish government didn't attend the recent oil sector's summit to discuss the impact of the oil price crash ...? Scottish Labour went ... but not the Scottish government. Correct me if I'm wrong - but I seem to remember quite a few commentators pointing out how blase Sturgeon seemed to be about this. Obviously not quite so blase now.

Will Al Murray now get his own BBC show, like Nigel Farage's Thursday night 'Question Time' programme?
Oh I do so hope that happens.

Pissing myself at the absolute patheticness (is that even a word?) of this. Are there really people enduring a hell because their chicken tikka masala remains aren't collected the next day? Really? Well if they are, they shouldn't bloody be ordering more tikka than they can eat then - should they Pickles - yes, I'm looking at you Pickles, at you.
Do you really think Pickles has leftovers?
No, you got me there Tonibel. But he obviously has insider knowledge of bins and their contents ... so I wouldn't be too surprised to learn he'd been rooting through the bins for said tikka masala 'remnants'.

Al Murray’s South Thanet bid looks like an effort to stop Nigel Farage http://bit.ly/1KK6nyO" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
66/1 odds of him winning. The bookies say more people are betting on Murray than on Farage.

Very good live too, although I preferred him in the earlier days when he played slightly smaller venues.

Remember this? The wheels of justice certainly do grind slow.
Foster is part of a group of 10 people who either admitted to or were found guilty of committing a range of fraud, forgery and conspiracy charges following a 13-week trial at Reading Crown Court.

Tell me more about free speech and the democratic system Dave. Then tell me about the Gagging Law again. #PMQs
The nerve of the man is astounding. I want most of the Condems legislation abolished as fast as possible - the Gagging Law should be one of the first. We've already seen how it is being used to restrict political bloggers - disgusting.
Absolutely Rebecca. Labour I think have promised to repeal it, so hopefully they do so at the first opportunity, if elected. Talking of protecting our right to free speech look at his quote from IDS.
Meeting security chiefs to discuss increasing email and phone intercept protocols before heading to France to support free speech.

Kafka would have been proud. I can only assume that my past perception of him being as thick as shit was not the disgruntled jaded judgement of a long time lefty, but actually a very accurate judgement that captured his essence, ie, that he really so stupid that he couldn't pour piss out of a boot, even if you printed comprehensive instructions on the boot's sole.

Yes very slow. But that report is very light on information. How much did she and others financially benefit from the fraud? I've got no idea of the scale of the scamming and how much they ripped off the public purse ...

Following the GP resignations, NHS England launched a commissioning process to find a new provider and the public meeting was primarily to introduce Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, the organisation which will take over the running of the surgery on an interim basis from February 2015.

Perhaps we have to wait for the sentencing? Is that how it works? The report says Legal restrictions have prevented Foster's guilty plea from being reported until the end of the trial.
