Morning refit
First small lol of the day goes to Marina --
Alas, Charlie Mullins finds himself simply unable to log off the UK without fanfare, granting a series of landmark interviews on the matter, in which our crystal-tipped boy pensioner, 71, touches on both his fears for inheritance tax and his future with his fiancee, Ra Ra, 33. It was only last year that they were disclosing their plans to marry in St Paul’s cathedral. “We’re allowed to do that because I’ve got an OBE,” explained Charlie, who will now presumably have to plight his latest troth in one of Dubai’s architectural triumphs – a mall in the shape of a gold bar, perhaps, or a phallic golf hotel.

Maybe they should have done an assessment, before ploughing on with the policy? Nah, it's fine, because TINA. Literally no choice but to freeze old, disabled people. Oh well 🤷

Nothing to see here, just the BBC with an article supporting regressive policies. Looks like they've managed to track down all the "I'm all right Jack" pensioners in the country, to tell us Starmer's plans are just fine and dandy. Even the one at the end who is slightly worried, just says she'll go to bed early, to avoid the cold.

I see the JC have looked into Elon Perry and found that there was something dodgy going on...editor to resign? Don't be silly...

And this, well quite.

If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

The JC has now been disguised as a charity, so that's all right ! :-)

BUT why don't the BBC newsreaders give a Health Warning that their superiors are Tories and registered Friends of Israel ?

Same could go for NON-NEGOTIABLE ZIONIST bloke !

Meanwhile, over the pond --

Truth is, there are lots of them.

I personally know some who have cheerfully admitted they don't need it, whilst still criticising the government for proposing they don't get it :)

We all know there are some who are not in that category and will lose out, and didn't need any "assessment" to tell us as much.

That's what campaigning and lobbying ahead of the actual budget is for.

What can you actually argue with in what I posted?

Corbynites shilling for the most insulated from austerity, financially secure and Tory/Brexit voting group in our society. That is what we have come to.

I haven't got a subscription but there's a reasonable amount of 'free' and a wide range of articles before the paywall --

I was reading this in French, then thought of you and English family --

https://www.lemonde.fr/en/opinion/artic ... 96_23.html
One may disagree with Draghi on several key points, not least of which is the precise composition of the investment in question. Nevertheless, this report has the immense merit of challenging the dogma of fiscal austerity. According to some, in Germany but also in France, European countries should repent for their past deficits and enter a long phase of primary surpluses in their public accounts, in other words, a phase in which taxpayers should pay much more in taxes than they receive in expenditure, to urgently repay the interest on the debt and the principal.

The savings windfall
In reality, this austerity dogma is based on economic nonsense. Firstly, because real interest rates (net of inflation) have fallen to historically extremely low levels in Europe and the US over the last 20 years: Less than 1% or 2%, and sometimes even negative levels. This reflects a situation where there is a huge windfall of little-used or misused savings in Europe and worldwide, ready to pour into Western financial systems with virtually no yield. In such a situation, it is the role of public authorities to mobilize these sums and invest them in training, healthcare, research and new technologies, major energy and transport infrastructures, thermal renovation of buildings, and so on.

As for the level of public debt, it is indeed very high, but not unprecedented. It is close to that observed in France in 1789 (around one year's national income), and significantly lower than that seen in the United Kingdom after the Napoleonic Wars and in the 19th century (two years' national income) and in all Western countries after the two World Wars (between two and three years).

War in Ukraine: In Kharkiv, bombed by the Russian army, 'everyone here has a cousin in Russia'

Many residents of Kharkiv, where a Russian strike killed five people on August 30, have relatives on the other side of the border, just a few dozen kilometers away. Some are estranged, others are still in touch, but the wounds run deep and families are being torn apart.

https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international ... 960_4.html

The article cuts off where the cousin in Russia refuses to believe that Russia is bombing Ukraine, it's the other way round !

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Early in the war I watched a YouTube interview of a man from Lviv who described how he'd invited his second cousin from the Donbas to visit, and then he went to Donetsk to watch the football with the other family , maybe 2006 ?

A few years later after the Russian proxies began the civil war he invited the cousin to bring his family to safety in the west .

" That's impossible, we'd be killed by the Nazis" .

Interesting that so many are finally noticing what the Jewish Chronicle in its present iteration is actually like, isn't it? Personally think they *should* have jumped ship en masse after that beyond execrable Douglas Murray "those poor ickle smol bean Nazis actually felt really bad about killing Jews" monstrosity.

(tbf to John Sweeney, he did)

You really aren't covering yourself with glory coming with this crap AK.

I had a few drinks a couple of nights ago with the bloke upstairs I'm friendly with (mentioned him before, staunch catholic hence anti-abortion and dubious views about women's rights but otherwise ok). He retired two years ago and is on the basic state pension living in the same ramshackle massive old house as me with single glazed ancient sash windows and no heating besides a gas fire in his front room. Never mind being insulated from austerity, he's barely insulated from the elements and is spitting feathers that the Labour Party he voted for has taken the £20 a week from him that he previously put in the gas meter.

You can deny the effects this is going to have on poor pensioners until you and you're ilk are as blue in the face as you are in your politics but please understand this isn't just a 'Corbynite' issue. And even if it were it would be nice if you didn't blatantly misrepresent their concerns.
