Brilliant. Poverty porn may be on the way out ... and reinforces what you said earlier Tish - those people that were all too ready to believe 'benefit scroungers' needed harsher treatment have pretty much had their desires sated by the Condems - the rest of us have just had enough.

A Tory minister has insisted £9,000-a-year tuition fees are not too expensive – because it only costs the same as a 'posh coffee' to pay them back every day.
Universities Minister Greg Clark said if graduates earn £30,000 a year they have to pay back £2.22 a day, which he claimed was a 'phenomenal investment'.
Labour said Mr Clark's 'bizarre' remarks showed the Government was out of touch with public concern over the cost of university.

Government costcutting plans will mean stricter measures for benefit claimants
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/po ... 19224.html
All unemployed people might have to “sign on” at the Jobcentre twice as often if they want to continue receiving benefits, under cost-cutting plans being considered by the Government.

Research by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), published last week, concluded that people who were compelled to sign on every week found a job almost six days faster than those who only had to appear at the Jobcentre once a fortnight.

A source familiar with the pilot projects said the Government was taking the results “very seriously” and that all of the UK’s 1.91 million job-seekers could “potentially” have to sign on once a week in the long term...

The weekly signing-on trials took place in east London and the west of Scotland. In their report for the DWP, researchers said job-seekers who signed weekly “spent at least an average of 2.6 fewer days on benefits than fortnightly signers”...
They really are determined to kick and kick and kick people while they're down. 2 trials - no info re how many people or precise areas but job opportunity levels might well be very unrepresentative of many signing on areas - and a paltry average reduction of 2.6 days fewer on benefits.... sheesh.

There will be people around here for whom that might mean walking a very long way in and out of Cardigan - wasting best part of a day - or spending money they don't have on a bus (if there is one) or taxi. The jobless are being punished more than those convicted of a crime - yet again.

SIR – It has been suggested that the deficit reduction programme set out by George Osborne in his emergency Budget should be watered down and spread over more than one parliament. We believe that this would be a mistake.

So, each writing in our personal capacity, we would encourage George Osborne and the Government to press ahead with his plans to reduce the deficit.
In the long run it will deliver a healthier and more stable economy.

Mr Hunt discussed opportunities for local businesses and explained his fourteen-years running his own business helps him in his every day role in running the NHS.

He then spoke to the audience, addressing the subject of the NHS and refuting the negative rhetoric used by political opponents.
He also made clear when problems are identified with the health service, this Government wanted swift action to ensure they are remedied.
To do this, the Health Secretary explained the Government had introduced “the toughest regime inspection in the world for hospitals, modelled on the Ofsted regime in schools” where inspectors “call a spade a spade” and call for substantive improvements whenever it is deemed necessary.

He said: “We have a long-term plan for the NHS; we are backing a strong NHS with a strong economy. This is why the Labour message on the NHS is failing to get through; in Greece and Portugal they had to cut spending on health because they forgot about the deficit.”

More than £800m a year is being wasted on students who drop out of apprenticeships and A-level courses because their schools and colleges are more interested in getting “bums on seats” than on guiding them to the right subjects

I don't think this is the whole story - the colleges have changed the way they operate because of attendance targets - they actually kick you off the courses quite quickly for poor attendance, even if you are likely to pass. This means those with both physical and health issues get kicked off rapidly, so I'm wondering how many of the quits are actually kicked off for being ill.

Afternoon.

Completely off topic...but I know we have some horse owners on FTN and wonder if anyone can help with some horse etiquette.

As I've mentioned part of my surviving the negativity of the election campaigning is getting out and walking as often as possible.

We pass a lovely chestnut horse in a field and it now comes to say hello.
He/she [didn't examine the undercarriage !] was chewing grass today, no mean feat as the sods were frozen. There seemed to be remnants of porridge oats around the field gate.

Is it acceptable to feed someone's horse a snack ?
Had wondered about carrying an apple or what ever they like as a healthy snack when I'm out walking but don't want to injure the horse's well being or upset its owner.

Is your horse the apple of your eye? Or does he just have his eye on your apple?

Most horses love apples. An apple cut into pieces makes a wonderful treat. Apples and applesauce are used to hide oral medications. But is an apple really as healthy as they say. And can an apple a day keep the vet away?

You'll be glad to know apples are a very healthy treat...for both you and your horse.

Apples or carrots are fine. But some horse owners don't like their animals being fed from the hand at all, so to be on the safe side you could drop the food on the ground. If it's a regular thing, that is, if it's only once in a while I can't see a problem.

Yeah, right.
If that really is the Tories central strategy then its difficult to see them increasing their vote before the election. Simply saying "long term economic plan" on a daily basis isn't going to enspire voters to switch to them from Labour, and its not going to drag back all their traditional voters who've jumped ship to UKIP either. Doubled up with increasingly desperate attacks on Milliband from people who've clearly got a vested interest in stopping Labour it all looks a bit pathetic.

I'm not certain about this - I'm blessed with not being involved with having to manage - but I think the big issue is a combination of (1) schools and colleges being very very keen on getting bums on seats and (2) then making sure that the only students they keep registered after a 'census date' (around the end of September, I think) are not going to fail or drop out - because they payment for the year will be based on their census numbers and they will be heavily penalised for failures or drop-outs from students after that date.

I work at an 11-18 school, and we have moved from having, pretty much, an open access sixth form to being much more proactive about what students come back and what they can do, and invest a lot of time in Y11 in organising what students are moving onto what courses, so our drop out rate is then impressively low, but if you don't put that work in before post-16 you're bound to take in students that you then feel the need to cut.

There is a condition known as Insulin Resistance (well, its more of a syndrome really) that prevents some horses from utilising sugar properly. They can - if not very closely monitored (diet wise) go to develop laminitis, a crippling, painful condition of the feet. (This is a lose explanation of IR in equines, its much more complicated) its unlikely this horse would have it as frozen grass is also a no no so he would be kept in if its frosty, but if were you I'd pop a note on the gate just asking is it of to give him apples and carrots.
