Apples or carrots are fine. But some horse owners don't like their animals being fed from the hand at all, so to be on the safe side you could drop the food on the ground. If it's a regular thing, that is, if it's only once in a while I can't see a problem.

Nice link. I might see if I can get down to Manchester (or the Great Wen, as we Bury dwellers consider it!) to support the protest. Frankly, I'm better at telling Tories to eff off rather than tweeting, due to the age of my phone (think of a cross between a mobile and Sherlock Holmes' bakelight phone, you'll get the picture), but every little helps.

Some nice posts here today - a very eclectic mix - and my sympathies to Grumpy Old Git on his loss. 98 is a pretty good tally if you have to check out.

'Hero' who walks 21 miles to work EVERY DAY stunned after Good Samaritans raise £100k for car

Determined James Robertson, 56, has trudged the better part of a marathon each day to reach the factory where he works since his car broke down ten years ago.
James, from Detroit, who has a perfect attendance record at his engineering factory, embarks on his herculean daily hike in rain, snow or shine. But earning just £7 an hour, he can't afford to buy a car so he can end the arduous trek.

His boss at the engineering factory, Todd Wilson, said James has a work ethic that would put anyone to shame.
He said: "I set our attendance standard by this man. "I say, if this man can get here, walking all those miles through snow and rain, well I'll tell you, I have people in Pontiac 10 minutes away and they say they can't get here — bull!"

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news ... es-5097782
Now I know this must make me sound bolshy, but if James is such a shining example why didn't his boss give him a bonus. Or raise his wage?

Ministers were warned of badger cull risks, documents show
Risk registers published after freedom of information battle reveal warnings over strong public opposition and risk of making bovine TB problem worse, not better

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/ ... are_btn_tw
Ministers were warned of the severe risks posed by England’s controversial badger cull three years before they began, according to documents released after a two-year legal battle.

Strong public opposition to the policy halting the cull was one of the top-ranked problems assessed by the ‘risk registers’, which are released the day after David Cameron admitted the badger cull is “probably the most unpopular policy I’m responsible for”.

Other significant risks were that the cull could cause an increase in tuberculosis in cattle, rather than decrease it, cost more than the funds available to government agencies and the police, and that “disagreement on the evidence base” would lead to “conflicting messages” to ministers.
And the Tory party have the nerve to be using the meme 'competence or chaos' re themselves or Labour in government.

Can't disagree with any of that. I've not been on the Graun site for a while, and I'm not missing it either. The paper's politics are laughable and offensive in equal part, whilst the new layout is appallingly bad. Presumably, in the same way that Clegg moaned about the FibDems attracting the wrong sort of voter, the Graun will be convinced that the exodus of most of their online readers will be down to them being the wrong sort of reader.

Where on earth does Cameron think he is going to find sponsors for 3,000 more schools given that they're struggling to get new sponsors in even now?
Probably by offering international multi-millionaires/billionaires British Citizenship in return for becoming sponsors... Shit, don't want to give them ideas...

Thanks for that Ohso. I haven't read it yet but will. He is indeed a very decent man. Unlikely to win but he would be able to highlight all matter of very very uncomfortable issues for this coalition - and that would be so worthwhile.

I am currently reeling from so much sickening news - the sort that makes me unable to scroll down webpages in a relaxed manner - animals being taunted and tortured in halal slaughter houses (and non halal too) - Jordanian pilot being burned alive in a cage by IS. I'm unable to deal with this horror face on at present ... cowardly I know ... but it just gets to me in a way I can't cope with sometimes.

The Graun is barely interested, lest it reflect badly on Dave and Nick. It's come to something when it takes the Torygraph to mention the Graph of Doom (not jaws of doom) as we in local government know it. Newcastle is the first: a lot - a lot - of councils will find themselves in the same boat, through no fault of their own. Oh, unless perhaps you class being in the north and not voting Tory as some sort of mortal sin, which the current government clearly does.

No, you're right. It's the Tories attempt to break local government in areas where it's not Tory. Once broken, Pickles will cry salty tears and run those council areas - with bare minimum services - into the ground from London, with no democratic accountability at all. Tell me that's not a horribly convincing scenario, because I think it's coming; Newcastle first.

Yes. For so long I had an awful job, but when my vision was better, it was still difficult to see some bits. Rowson puts in so much detail. Enlarging it didn't help because it just blurred.

From BTL on that badger cull risk register report:
Freeda Brocks 2h ago
On the plus side, support and engagement in direct action to save animals lives is at its highest levels in this country for decades.
The number of sab groups has gone up from 30 four years ago to 44 this year.
Not only are there more sabs, but those sabs have united with middle england conservationists and created a potent force that combines direct action in the field with more mainstream political campaigning.
I like to think of this force as David Cameron's greatest legacy to our countryside, but I won't be applauding him.
This rise in people prepared to take direct action is the most, no probably only, positive outcome of the coalition assault on wildlife and the environment.

I'd like to think there has been a similar increase in people prepared to act on other issues.

I wish there could be a grand anti-Tory, anti-Condem coalition, alliance - groups coming together and putting aside differences - to make one huge stand against this government and what they have done to just about every walk of life in this country (except bankers and fat cats). It would not just be about opposing austerity - it would be about wanting a stop to the demonising, punishing and destroying of those people, animals or ideas they want to take aim at.

Apples or carrots are fine. But some horse owners don't like their animals being fed from the hand at all, so to be on the safe side you could drop the food on the ground. If it's a regular thing, that is, if it's only once in a while I can't see a problem.

I wouldn't feed another owners pony unless I knew I was allowed to do so. Certainly as previously noted many owners don't like hand feeding. The reason for this is some horses get rude and grabby and take to rolling their owners around the floor to see if treats fall out. In my experience they are very adept at rifling pockets. Also if there is another horse in the field issues can be caused.

But on the whole chucking the occasional apple or carrot on the ground probably isn't harmful, although apples must be stood on to break them apart as they can choke on them and care is needed with carrots as well. Horses are a bit rubbish in the robustness stakes.

As a kid growing up in the country, I was always told that you kept your hand absolutely flat and tucked your thumb well away to avoid getting bitten. I imagine that still holds.

There are some lovely horses in the fields next to one of the places I garden for. It was very tempting to think ... oh, I must bring them some carrots, apples etc next time - as they are always keen to come over and have a little chat and nuzzle at the fence when I'm there. However, I've never had an apple or carrot handy .... Just as well as I was then told by the person I'm gardening for that she had been given strict instructions by the horses owner not to feed them any treats as one of them ... the friendliest of course who is usually in a field on its own - is on a strict diet. She's a cob and has put on far too much weight from being greedy - so they were trying to slim her down by limiting the grazing and feed. So we just chat over the fence - and they seem quite happy with that.

Looks like UKIP, in trying to outlaw Muslim food practices, have accidentally got another religious group involved...

UKIP not exactly subtle in their 'we only meant to attack Muslims' message.
Oops.

Maybe other journalists might realise that when you say you want only one law in this country and want Sharia courts banned, that must mean you're not happy with Beth Din either...

Priceless - "we're nice racists. We're not picking on Jews. Yet."

Just when you think that politics in the UK couldn't get any shitter, along come UKIP to undercut your expectations yet again. I mean, what do their supporters think that UKIP in government would actually be like? All the one I know are complete fucking monomaniacs who should never be given any sort of power, on the very real basis that they will harm people, and some people quite badly indeed.

I do occasionally wonder just how stupid the electorate of the UK actually is, but then console myself that even according the wildest polls, only one in five of the population (which is bad enough) is a racist, misogynist, small minded, xenophobic, self-righteous pub bore with the wit of a dead sheep and all its charm too.

A health expert who advised this government during the passage of the Health and Social Care Act in 2012 argues that Labour's plan to integrate health and social care is preferable to the coalition's approach.

Completely off topic...but I know we have some horse owners on FTN and wonder if anyone can help with some horse etiquette.

As I've mentioned part of my surviving the negativity of the election campaigning is getting out and walking as often as possible.

We pass a lovely chestnut horse in a field and it now comes to say hello.
He/she [didn't examine the undercarriage !] was chewing grass today, no mean feat as the sods were frozen. There seemed to be remnants of porridge oats around the field gate.

Is it acceptable to feed someone's horse a snack ?
Had wondered about carrying an apple or what ever they like as a healthy snack when I'm out walking but don't want to injure the horse's well being or upset its owner.
The 'remnants of porridge oats' might just be oats spilt by the horse from it's bucket/feed-bowl if the owners are in the habit of feeding it by the gate or tempting it to be caught. An occasional apple or carrot is welcomed by most horses, and many just love bananas. We have notices everywhere at the yard and at the field asking people not to feed 'treats' to the horses – partly to ensure that their diets are carefully controlled (for health, weight, workload, and for the sake of their teeth – the feed-room operates like a fine restaurant!) and partly so that they're not encouraged to snatch at hands or pockets in search of treats. If you know, or can find out, who owns the horse perhaps you could ask them if they'd mind.
