Me too. A man who can compose a speech like that - and he meant it - would have made a damn good leader.ErnstRemarx wrote:One of the best political passages of all time.Toby Latimer wrote:Here is the Kinnock original
If Margaret Thatcher is re-elected as prime minister on Thursday, I warn you. I warn you that you will have pain – when healing and relief depend upon payment. I warn you that you will have ignorance – when talents are untended and wits are wasted, when learning is a privilege and not a right. I warn you that you will have poverty – when pensions slip and benefits are whittled away by a government that won’t pay in an economy that can't pay. I warn you that you will be cold – when fuel charges are used as a tax system that the rich don't notice and the poor can't afford.
I warn you that you must not expect work – when many cannot spend, more will not be able to earn. When they don't earn, they don't spend. When they don't spend, work dies. I warn you not to go into the streets alone after dark or into the streets in large crowds of protest in the light. I warn you that you will be quiet – when the curfew of fear and the gibbet of unemployment make you obedient. I warn you that you will have defence of a sort – with a risk and at a price that passes all understanding. I warn you that you will be home-bound – when fares and transport bills kill leisure and lock you up. I warn you that you will borrow less – when credit, loans, mortgages and easy payments are refused to people on your melting income.
If Margaret Thatcher wins on Thursday, I warn you not to be ordinary. I warn you not to be young. I warn you not to fall ill. I warn you not to get old.
Kinnock was horribly underrated. I still have a lot of time for him, and find his vision prescient indeed.

New Number 10 denial "We have no record of any government minister being made aware by HMRC of any alleged wrong doing by HSBC employees".
“The new allegations that HSBC colluded to help wealthy people and rich corporations hide money and avoid taxes are very serious, and, if true, the Department of Justice should reconsider the earlier deferred prosecution agreement it entered into with HSBC and prosecute the new violations to the full extent of the law.”
Warren’s intervention will further stoke the scandal in Washington, where members of the Senate banking committee are preparing to grill a representative of the Federal Reserve on Tuesday over how much regulators knew about US tax evasion connected to HSBC Switzerland.

Compare and contrast the pillorying of the Crystal Methodist and the easy ride that the Tory press are giving Stephen Green...
Interesting that the charge against Flowers was that he didn't have a banking background - Green of course does...but sections of the press seem quite happy to swallow the line that he didn't know what one of his companies was up to. Do they not have a corporate audit?

It's more disappointing that AS has chosen to misrepresent Longworh.
I was watching Sky news at that time & yes, Longworth did say that but added that he understood EM had a diary commitment & that he had addressed business leaders back in November & at other times.John Longworth, the BCC director general, told Sky News that Ed Miliband’s absence from the BCC conference was “disappointing”.
It was disappointing because I think it was a great opportunity, a platform for the business community, businesses from all over the country, to set out the case.

A few nice links from my other spiritual home...
Regarding HSBC and the government's complicity -

Another heart in mouth moment...

And finally an editorial of such clarity and good sense, that I am reminded why I like the MS and don't bother with shit like the Graun:

I believe that's what passes for self restraint in some circles. I've never been to one. I'd have been a hopeless Roman.ohsocynical wrote:Only four? GoodnessEx-IMF chief Dominque Strass-Kahn insists he 'only went to four orgies a year'
