George Osborne’s week of silence

Chris Leslie MP, Labour’s Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, commenting on George Osborne’s repeated failure to answer serious questions over the Government’s handling allegations of tax avoidance and evasion at HSBC, said:

“We’ve now had a week of silence from George Osborne - the submarine Chancellor still hasn’t surfaced. But it is time he and David Cameron finally started answering questions about HSBC and Lord Green.

“Why has there only been one prosecution out of 1,100 names? Did David Cameron and George Osborne discuss tax evasion at HSBC with Lord Green? Why did they appoint Lord Green as a Tory Minister months after the government received these files? Why did George Osborne and the Treasury sign a deal with the Swiss in 2012 which prevents the UK from actively obtaining similar information in the future?

“In this row over tax evasion David Cameron and George Osborne are now guilty of political evasion.”

The SNP- wasting the Electoral Commission's time.
“I have today written to the Electoral Commission asking them to investigate Sir David Garrard’s eligibility to donate to the Scottish Labour Party.

“Reports that Sir David had placed tens of thousands of pounds into offshore trusts – the kind of arrangements Ed Miliband has been vocal in his opposition to – are not only deeply damaging for Jim Murphy but should also set alarm bells ringing.

“Mr Murphy should publicly state that he will not accept donations from Sir David as long as questions remain over his tax arrangements.

“It was embarrassing for Labour when it emerged that Sir David – who was also involved in the cash for honours row - thought Margaret Thatcher was ‘fantastic’ and ‘wonderful’. And it speaks volumes that a millionaire former Tory donor, now chooses to put his money on the Blairite Jim Murphy.

“But at a time of crippling Westminster cuts to public sector budgets, a zero tolerance approach to tax avoidance is more important than ever. And that is exactly what First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has called for.

“It is time for Labour to show where they truly stand on this issue. Jim Murphy’s party simply cannot take money from anyone who has been involved in the practice of tax avoidance.”
The little known legal principle that if Ed Miliband promises to investigate something then it must be illegal already.

“If Labour were serious about economic recovery they would support the SNP’s alternative to austerity- rather than hitting the most vulnerable people in society the hardest with cuts to public spending.

Labour have voted along with the Tories for continuing Westminster’s austerity agenda in the next Parliament, with £30bn more of cuts. By contrast, the SNP supports real term increases in government investment - which limited to half a per cent each year would see debt reduce as a share of GDP over the course of the next Westminster parliament, but crucially allow a further £180 billion investment in infrastructure, skills and education to further boost the economy.

“Ed Miliband is clearly taking notes from Scotland by announcing policy positions on apprenticeships - Scotland is on course to exceed the target of 25,000 new Modern Apprenticeships this year as testament to the Scottish Government’s commitment to investing in youth employment.

“A vote for the SNP in May will mean a group of SNP MPs holding the balance of power and supporting moves to lock austerity out of Westminster - by requiring Westminster Budgets and welfare policy to meet the more robust standards of equality assessment that already exists in Scotland.”
Fuck off, liars.

Sorry.

And if there's a Tory government - minority or otherwise - after May 7th ... how will they be locking austerity out of Westminster then? What a weird choice of phrase anyway.

Yup, split the vote even further - that'll help won't it......

edit: with GP's entering the political sphere, I wonder what patients with different political opinions do - stay with GP or change ?
Be willing to bet GP's don't even think about that.
I'm pretty sure the National Health Action Party was originally only going to challenge where there wasn't a challenging candidate who voted against the Health and Social Care Act which meant they weren't going to get in Labour's way if they had a chance of winning. Looking at their website now, they seem to be lumping Labour in with those MPs who voted for the H&SCA and are saying Labour's pledge to reverse it doesn't go far enough! My guess is they have been infiltrated (not hard, a lot of doctors are well to do and Tory inclined) and are being used to split the left vote in the same way the right is also bigging up the Green Party. The message from all quarters at the moment appears to be "they're all the same" so vote for anyone but Labour. If Cameron wasn't so monumentally useless it might even have worked.....

Hi all - been lurking as fed up with politics - thank goodness for FTN. :)

Tish, RogerOThornhill and TubbyIsaacs commented on Daley's DT article reference NHS Property Services yesterday.
ROT : She was a bit puzzled as to why NHS property Services was a private limited company owned by the Sec of State. I pointed out gently that it was fairly likely to have been done that way so that it can be sold off in one go...that'd be a nice reduction to the national debt just before the election.
TubbyIsaacs : Just a shame it reduces national assets at the same time.

I've been "at" NHS Property Service ever since it was set up (awful smell). They promised they would put their Asset Register on line. They still haven't (although there are pretty pretties there) and properties are being disposed of for sale and by transfer. No proper Asset Register has been produced for public consumption although there was supposed to be transparency. Some of the Board Papers have redactions in them as well!

NHS Property Services has recently suggested I meet with them.

It does say, in the article, that the Governing Body is still seeking Academy status although two Governors stood down having, apparently, had links to TSAT – the company/trust that the board have just voted against. I wonder that they're not, as far as we know, planning to re-run the vote on Academy status at all. If they're already well on the way to getting out of Special Measures surely that shows that they're doing fine as a school under LA control.

@TeacherROAR Lord Nash letter on p29 of report is disgraceful. This type of dictat and misuse of power doesn't belong in a modern democracy.

@TeacherROAR @Kevin_Maguire The Tories talk of localism and 'big society' yet when parents and governors say No, Nash just dismisses them.

Not sure what's going on there...
Enforced academy conversion. Governing body resisting it.

Incredible, isn't it, those governors?

No sense of conflict of interest at all in the world of academies.

Not least in Lord Nash overseeing himself.

And we still don't know whether or not 'main disabling condition' is the first thing someone writes (often as part of a list of conditions) on their ESA/IB form or if it's the condition which is, in truth, their major disabling condition out of what might be many things! The number of people claiming purely for obesity will be even more vanishingly small (if any at all) that the 0.002% of claimants identified here.

Though on previous evidence, there'll be some link between Ed Miliband and some cartoon villain who isn't white.

Anyone want to come with me (before I respond)?
Where about are you and where would you be thinking of having the meeting? Be nice if someone could be with you if only for backup / moral support.
Thanks for that. Seriously, OK on my own - just wondered if anyone else interested. Their RegOff is in London Road, SE1. I've suggested meeting there, "if that is the site of the Company's Asset Register" :fight:
When is your meeting?

Government should introduce Labour’s compulsory jobs guarantee to get young people off benefits and into paid work

Rachel Reeves MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting ahead of David Cameron’s speech, said:

"With youth unemployment rising, not falling, the government should introduce Labour’s compulsory jobs guarantee to get young people off benefits and into paid work.

'Under David Cameron young people can spend years claiming benefit without being offered and required to take up paid work. Labour's compulsory jobs guarantee would ensure young people are given the chance to learn, earn and contribute.”

'The choice we face in May is clear. A Tory failing plan which has abandoned thousands of young people or Labour’s plan to get young jobseekers back to work.”

I'm supportive of a jobs guarantee if it's paying properly & is connected to 'learn, earn & contribute'. I know Reeves isn't thoroughly enjoyed here. I'd like anyone without employment & wanting work have access to a job paying decent wages.

Apologies for the lengthy quote - please read the parts I've bolded if anything.
New figures show Government undermining apprenticeship quality

• Almost four in 10 firms are unaware the in-work training they provide is branded an apprenticeship by the Government
• The proportion of apprenticeship starts by young people down by almost a quarter under the Tory-led Government

New concerns have emerged on the quality and status of the apprenticeships created under the Tory-led Government as the Business Department’s own research has found almost four in 10 firms offering apprenticeships don’t even realise they are doing so.

Since 2010, in-work training schemes for existing employees have been rebadged as apprenticeships by the Government, to fix their struggling figures. This has shifted their focus away from new entrants to the workforce and raised concerns that the apprenticeship ‘gold standard’ has been undermined.

The new research comes as the proportion of apprenticeship starts made up by 16 to 24 year olds has fallen significantly from 82.3 per cent when the last Labour government left office, to 63.2 per cent last year.

BIS research also finds that two-thirds of employers recruiting apprentices from existing staff don’t consider their qualifications to be apprenticeships at all, and this number is increasing.

The proportion of apprenticeships made up by over 25s have more than doubled, from 17.4 per cent in 2009/10 to 36.7 per cent in 2013/14.

Among apprentices over 25 years old, 93 per cent already worked for their employer before starting their apprenticeship, raising concerns that existing training programmes for those already in work are simply being rebadged as apprenticeships.

The Government’s Apprenticeship Pay Survey has found that 21 per cent of apprentices receive no formal training, rising to 24 per cent for the 19-24 age group, while 15 per cent of apprentices are not receiving the relevant National Minimum Wage.

Under Labour’s plans, all apprenticeships would last a minimum of two years and be quality Level Three qualifications and involve proper training.

If PF isn't around tomorrow, perhaps it's because she has stumped up a tenner to hear Dave speak !

From Guido & reproduced here in its entirety to save you from having to ruin your sleep after visiting his site:
This pinged into the inboxes of some lucky Tories in the south of England this afternoon. The line in bold has sparked local outrage:

commencing at 2.30pm

Due to security requirements, attendees must
PRE-REGISTER FOR THE EVENT

Accepted applicants will be advised of the event location by email on Monday evening.
A donation of £10 per head, payable upon entrance, would be much appreciated to cover the costs of the event.

Making money from room-meat. Guido is awaiting comment to find out whether this is new standard procedure. They’ve dropped the prices from last week though, down from £5,000-a-plate to a tenner on the door…

UPDATE: A co-conspirator gets in touch to say it was the same in Northfield. Birmingham last Friday. Ten pound a head…

Not sure I've ever agreed with Guido on anything but surely charging supporters to see 'Dave on tour' is beyond the pale ?!
