I don't understand why they can't be working on a 'development' plan of sorts - what needs to change first, and then sequentially, in order to create the right conditions for a Citizens Income to be introduced. That would show to a lot of people that they are thinking about delivery and how to get to it ... They need to have a five, ten, fifteen and 20 year plan. That would be honesty and competence in evidence alongside the vision.
Absolutely.

It doesn't help when you've got a load of people all voting for their own radical ideas. Parties find it hard enough when they're suggesting relatively small changes to government policy.

Well, you've hit on what mature, responsible, practical, realistic & competent democratic governance is all about. We all can't get everything we want. It's best to have compassionate, decent people in leadership positions who've practised governance - not spoiled, overindulged, foolish men like Dave & his marauders thinking they're either good at it or born to rule. They're not. They're crap.

The MP is a non-executive director of Alliance Medical Group who were granted cancer scanning services in Staffordshire, Cheshire, Shropshire and Lancashire last December. The contract to diagnose illnesses was said to be £7m cheaper than the NHS alternative put forward by the Royal Stoke’s trust.

During Health Questions, Labour MP Jamie Reed asked Jeremy Hunt whether the Department of Health had any contact with Sir Malcolm before the contract was awarded by the government.

Mr Reed asked: “Can the secretary of state explain why the more expensive private sector bid was chosen over the better value NHS which provides these services?

“And will the Secretary of State today confirm, because this is a matter of profound public interest, that no contact took place between his department and the board of Alliance Medical, including at any point with current board member, the right honourable member for Kensington?”

The Health Secretary responded that he admired the Labour MPs "chutzpah" but said "it all behoves him to come and talk to us about privatisation.”

I've just watched C4 + 1 news. Caroline Lucas, for once, less than her usual self assured, easy going interviewee although good in her defence of Bennett. But she did guarantee that the manifesto will be fully costed and worked through when it is launched. Will be interesting to see what it contains - what they have prioritised for the next 5 years.

The interviewer, Cathy Newman, had pointed out to Lucas that the key originator of the Citizens Income has now said he thinks it is not workable ... and another way would need to be found of providing a similar safety net.

Your police helicopter service is being closed - sorry Wales you get none.
I'm scandalised by this, if it goes ahead Wales will have NO police helicopter coverage. None.

I see that Toady's done the ultimate click-bait article over at the DT by suggesting that Carswell is positioning himself for a leadership bid after the election. And the top-rated comment?

"Douglas Carswell is manoeuvres"
More quality journalism from the Common Purpose hippy hacks at the EU loving DT
:D

Common Purpose? What is it about them that makes the frothers so worked up?

I won't keep it up, don't worry.

I'd like to see some nods to PR, but would make the threshold for election quite high. The BNP got Richard Barmbrook on the London Assembly with 5.2%.

Can anybody out there please explain to me the difference between an "error of judgement" and a mistake?
I don't think there is much difference (as I think you're suggesting). Although an "error of judgement" carries, to me, the implication that quite a lost of consideration went into making it. Which is a bit worse than a simple mistake. That is to say that, even after applying his great intellect, Malcolm Rifkind still got it wrong.

Edited to add -

Or even:

3 + 34 = 38 is a mistake (usually) unless you're Iain Smith or similar;

spending weeks agonising over how to decorate your living room and then opting for purple with orange stripes (and realising that, after you've done the painting, you hate it) is an error of judgement (apologies to anyone here who has opted for such a style statement).
[My bold]

Never stripes, my dear. The Horror!

But orange flowers on a purple background. Or, perhaps the other way around. I've been racking my brain over how to redecorate and don't want to simply do white, yet again. Thank you :)

Tech Eph,

I've been looking for the HS2 journey times to and from Manchester. There used to be a very clear page. The HS2 stuff is now under gov.uk, and I can't find it anywhere.
