Ed Miliband said, in a speech/Q&A session today, that in the last year just 490 of 'the most expensive council properties' were sold. Set that against the Tory claim that 15,000 come empty every year and can, therefore, be sold off...

In some ways, Scots unconsciously echo their national bogeyman Margaret Thatcher in their emphasis on individual over social causes of poverty and exclusion. The myth of Scottish difference is pivotal to a certain strain of nationalism. England is a foreign country, greedy where Scotland is generous, mean-spirited where Scotland is compassionate. Scotland shouldn't be independent simply for democratic reasons but for moral ones: We're better than them.
Are we, though? Comparing Scottish and English attitudes towards inequality, tax, and wealth redistribution, John Curtice and Rachel Ormston concluded in 2011 that "Scotland is more social democratic than England – but the difference is only modest”. On 24th March the DWP Select Committee Inquiry’s findings and recommendations were officially published.
http://www.publications.parliament.uk/p ... 4/814.pdf.
The Labour Party have committed to accept all the recommendations in the DWP select Committee Inquiry report.
The DWP has made an initial response to the report but it’s disappointing that it made no reference to the select committee’s recommendations which would help protect vulnerable people from the inappropriate use of sanctions. In contrast Labour have already said they would accept all the select committee’s recommendations.

Re Ronnie Caroll :
Mr Carroll was due to stand as an independent in the election in the Hampstead and Kilburn constituency. There was an exchange on twitter last night saying if a candidate dies during an election campaign the poll is closed, and has to be run at a later date.
I can understand that in a by-election, but will be the case in a GE?
(I did ask last night but can't find either my question or any answer, if there was one. Threads are getting longer....)

I can provide an answer there
The answer is no - if an Independent (as Carroll was here, though he has stood for [micro] parties in the past) or "no description" candidate dies during an election campaign, voting goes on without them on the originally planned day. This is because if a party candidate dies, they can be replaced in short order (and the election go ahead after a short delay, as in Thirsk and Malton last time) whereas Indy/etc people are "sui generis" and thus not replaceable.
Carroll will, however, remain on the ballot paper - it will be interesting to see how much support he gets......

It's painful to watch & listen to someone lying or delusional - Gove seemed to be one or the other or both. Mr. Adam Boulton, interviewing Gove, was excellent in that he raised questions when he heard Gove make contradictory or misleading statements. Gove didn't like being questioned - he actually seemed to blame his incoherence on being asked to make sense.
I watched & heard Dave earlier today interviewed by Mr. Eamonn Holmes. Eight minutes of Dave not telling or not knowing the truth. Holmes didn't move. If I were Dave, Holmes' body language would've frightened the hell out of me. There wasn't any connection going on between the two - at least it seemed that way to me.

My comment on Labour's manifesto: it matters only if Nicola Sturgeon says so
Proud to be part of The Indecent Minority.

If nothing else, I'm taught the wisdom of not lying as a lifestyle choice. Most people don't live like the Tory coalition government have led the last five years - they've made promises they didn't keep & continue to make promises that can't be kept. How do we negotiate with that? It's impossible to be rational with irrational players.Tubby Isaacs wrote:The Tories- taking Policy Exchange drivel and virtually doubling the amount each sale raises.

Well, I think we know which way the G is going.

Ah, bite me, George M. I don't have the energy to create a perfect political party you can vote for in about 22 days.AngryAsWell wrote:Well, I think we know which way the G is going.

I think I posted earlier that the reason that the manifesto launch was in Swindon was due to 2 marginals not the fact that it was a UTC...probably just as well it hadn't been inspected.Tubby Isaacs wrote:Govey's Marginal Seat Disaster tour!
UTC in Walsall North closes, leaving hundreds of kids to find another school place.

If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.

Wouldn't pay too much attention to Monbiot - he's been against Labour for as long as I've been reading the Graun.AngryAsWell wrote:Well, I think we know which way the G is going.
