UKIP are saying what you need to look at is the share of the vote and anything above eight or nine percent is outperforming public expectations. Is that pre-emptive disaster management?

Maidstone stayed Tory, although her vote share was reduced. And our Labour vote was up on last time, albeit only about 1%. Yesterday, with all its optimism, seems a lifetime away now.

Morning all.

I got up at 6am, turned the tv on, turned the tv off and went back to bed with the tablet. I've just finished catching up with ftn's overnight coverage.

It's a weird thing, but I was pottering around about 10pm last night when the exit polls were about to come out when I suddenly didn't want to hear them. I turned the tv off and went to bed. I'm glad I did. It seems the Scottish polls were right, godammit. Not to mention the LD collapse. My dad said on Weds that it was going to turn a sea of blue from North Somerset to Land's End, just like the 80's. I can't believe he's right. I thought at least David Laws would hang on. I blame Clegg - Charles Kennedy wouldn't have let this happen. And now Kennedy is gone. What a strange night. I haven't checked Rees-Mogg, but he's bound to have got back in. Can't look at the tv. Anyone got the katest nos?

If Ed Miliband resigns or is pushed out, I will resign my membership.

He is a good man, an effective politician, and a socialist.

The great British public have been blind to evidence and deaf to reason - if the Labour party choose to follow their self-harming idiocy and get rid of the man whose personal attributes got people like me to join, then there is no hope for them. Murdoch and Dacre et al will have won.

The potential this country had to change course 24 hours ago has gone; we can expect viciousness on a grand scale, more poverty, less justice, and a government of such venality and incompetence we will see more social division and the end of the union.

I am gutted, I am angry, and if I could emigrate I would. I had hope yesterday, now all I have is a sick trepidation.
This "victory" for Cameron is based on lies, and I predict some serious social unrest at some point.

If what's left of the Libbing dead go into another deal with the Tories, we are fucked. If they don't, and finally show some backbone, it's possible that Cameron might face some opposition - but it's not looking good, and Clegg is what stands between the Tories and hope. Again.

@pk1 yes bad news from Colne Valley - but not all bad

Jane increased Labour's vote by several thousand to nearly 20,000 - which was more than enough to be elected in 2001 and 2005 for Labour.

Unfortunately the Tory increased his vote by a similar amount.

The Lib Dems on the other hand slumped from around 17,000 to around 4,000.

It feels to me that one of the stories of the night is that the Lib Dems did too badly! I always thought they would hold on to their orange book true Liberal types, but clearly not.

Enough. I haven't cried yet and it can't be far off...

My husband's back asleep, but I think he will say make no hasty decisions, by resigning [he's a member too] we would give the right wing press & the SNP succour, they could use loss of membership as an effective attack.

In the short term though I am letting my sulky inner child loose.
Will do research on Scottish products & services, and any SNP donors amongst them will not benefit from my purchasing them. That's the only power I have.
Eric may be able to help on that.

It will become apparent in the next few weeks what the SNP really wanted.

I am so sick of sociopathic greed. There is no point in having another foot-in-the-door labour. We need to make sure that Labour continues to develop into a genuine alternative for your average citizen (working or otherwise). Labour seriously needs to keep it's eye on the ball, taking cameron to task and not getting caught up in another leadership contest.

I wouldn't rush to quit just yet. There is a serious debate to be had in Labour and your voice should be heard.

Ed probably will resign, but I really think he should at least give it a month for the dust to settle (he probably won't though). He will view this as a pretty personal defeat, but again it isn't. This is far more complex. The Lib Dems no longer exist, what does that mean and should some steps be taken to re-align centre left politics. How does Labour decouple Scotland from England so they don't poison each other? How can Labour fight the lock the elite have on the levers of power (BBC/Press)? How can Labour accomodate English Nationalism? How can Labour be seen as economically safe whilst still standing for its core values?

The answer to these questions goes beyond questions like is the party too left wing. There is no future for the party as a pale copy of the Tories.

Ah, now that's less of a surprise than Yeovil, but it was one of the ones I was hoping the LDs could hold into to deny the Tories. The LDs always needed to do well to keep the Tories in check in places Labour can't win. With less tactical voting, it may improve Labour's vote share, but I guess that won't do them much good now.

agree - now is not the time to let Labour go into navel-gazing. It needs to be on the Tories' back while continuing the process of building itself into a grassroots-driven representation of the majoriy of people.

I'm not sure what Labour can do to be honest, it's the electorate who have turned insane and it them who are going to have to realise what they've just done. They've clearly stopped listening to Labour.

Some people just like punching themselves in the face and living in fear it seems.
