Morning all.
That IDS piece in the Guardian is shocking, fawning uncritically. Typical lefties.
The BBC news app top headlines are currently
UK accuses Russia over Syria airstrikes - based on an interview Fallon gave the Sun. Jesus wept.
Aid workers die in Afghan city bombing - I'm sure it'd be the same headline if the Russian's had said they might be to blame.

Morning.
Just read last night's thread and about Boris Johnson boasting about extracting £93m from Osborne by means of his overpaid Telegraphpropaganda column.
Just looked up the following definitions of words which sprang to mind.
Corruption - dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.
Extortion (also called shakedown, outwrestling, and exaction) is a criminal offense of obtaining money, property, or services from a person, entity, or institution, through coercion.
Theft Act 1968 Blackmail.
A person is guilty of blackmail if, with a view to gain for himself or another or with intent to cause loss to another, he makes any unwarranted demand with menaces; and for this purpose a demand with menaces is unwarranted unless the person making it does so in the belief—
(a)that he has reasonable grounds for making the demand; and
(b)that the use of the menaces is a proper means of reinforcing the demand

Editing to add: I am told that he has apparently since changed his views on hunting ... but as someone else said it's hard to trust a U turn when it coincides with needing votes. So I'd still like to hear a clear public statement from him to say he is against hunting and badger culls.

Britain's nuclear submarines are "completely useless" against modern warfare, and the £20bn spent on renewing them is a waste of money, retired senior military officers said yesterday.
The former head of the armed forces Field Marshal Lord Bramall, backed by two senior generals, argued that the huge sums being spent on replacing the delapidated submarines that carry the Trident ballistic missiles could be better used to buy conventional weapons which are badly needed by the armed forces.

Sorry for the source ... and their reporting style.
Cameron's back-to-work scheme for 'troubled families' has cost £26,000 for each claimant who took a job
Cameron's Troubled Families scheme has cost £448million in three years
But it has steered just 17,000 benefit claimants into work during that period
That equates to cost of more than £26,000 for each claimant who took a job
It would've been cheaper for taxpayers to maintain their family on handouts
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... k-job.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
... The Prime Minister has lavished praise on the scheme, which he said this summer was a ‘real Government success’ that had ‘tackled worklessness, addiction, truancy and anti-social behaviour’.
But a Department of Work and Pensions assessment found that, of 101,000 people on benefits who had been singled out by the scheme, only 27,000 started a job.
More than a third of those soon dropped out of work, with just 17,000 managing to keep a job for three months – the period regarded as ‘a sustained job outcome’ for most of those involved.
There is no guarantee that they stayed in work longer.

Tory peer Lord Hanningfield has been charged with expenses fraud after allegedly claiming £3,300 in full-day allowances while spending less than 40 minutes in parliament.
The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed today that the 75-year-old, whose real name is Paul White, has been charged with false accounting in relation to claims submitted in July 2013 for the £300 daily allowance at the House of Lords.

This is getting ridiculous. Why doesn't the UK government simply get together with French authorities and sort this situation out. By not allowing them to apply for asylum in the UK from Calais, we're just encouraging them to try to get into the UK illegally by dangerous means. We hear about those who are sadly unsuccessful, but how many are succeeding and disappearing into the shadow economy? Surely it's better for society for all newcomers to be here legally, working and making a life for themselves legally, than coming here anyway but working and living illegally and profiting criminals rather than the economy.More than 100 refugees and migrants storm French terminal in what officials describe as an organised attack

I can't quite get my head around this story. Am I right in thinking these supposed stalwarts of the BBC have clubbed together to take the piss out of Robert Peston? Like playground bullies? Or is the whole article a spoof? Clearly Peston has upset the BBC with his impartial questioning of Tory government activities, as he came in for Labour leader style treatment on HIGNFY last night for not wearing a tie. As everyone laughed at his disheveled appearance, the challenging question he posed to Osborne was studiously ignored. I hope he does go to ITV and goes up against Marr, he might just bring some much needed balance back into British political debate.BBC heavyweights in spoof plea to make Robert Peston stay

Tory government demonstrate how not to prevent bovine tuberculosis.
Barbarous, unwarranted, dangerous, ineffectual and expensive
According to the information in the article, the badger cull has cost £4.49m (excluding delay costs)
588 badgers have been shot dead
£7,800 ≈ cost of killing one badger

Following on from my by-election review yesterday, have had a little snippet in another place re one of the contests (in Fife)
This saw the biggest Labour-SNP swing in recent weeks - a spy on the ground suggests that this is not unconnected with the Labour candidate being a strong defender of travellers rights, and the Nats busily running scare campaigns against the possibility of local sites being set up for them.
Yup, that left wing inclusive anti-racist SNP again.......

Just one example in a five year voting history of materially damaging social security provisions for people who don't have the Goldsmith's advantages. Nothing wrong with getting born wealthy. Yesterday, I was asked about a post I'd written about Goldsmith. I wrote Goldsmith is a 'spoiled puppy' and a 'dilettante' because his wealthy family is financing his London Mayoral election campaign and his environmental convictions waver. He turn tails, changes his mind in order to satisfy personal ambition. Goldsmith recently married a member of the Rothschild family, very successful bankers that familial dynasty. Goldsmith and his heiress wife share common ancestry. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with marrying a Rothschild heiress either. Rothschild support for Goldsmith's London mayoral campaign. Goldsmith wants to be mayor of London. Bankers and London and Rothschild and Goldsmith.
How many social housing tenants have been displaced in London alone, Zac Goldsmith, thanks to your Tory party legislation? I don't like wealthy people who actively cause harm to those who aren't wealthy through their political action. Goldsmith is one.

Thanks Ohso and JA. Thanks also for your reply yesterday JA - didn't get a chance to get back to you. Plenty in his voting record to condemn him though merely being a Tory is enough really. I have heard some people say there was a time when it was thought he'd join the Greens. If that is true I'm bloody glad he didn't! Or maybe he tried and we turned him down. Loyal Tory GoldsmithJust one example in a five year voting history of materially damaging social security provisions for people who don't have the Goldsmith's advantages. Nothing wrong with getting born wealthy. It's a disgraceful shame to support legislation needlessly imposing hardship on people who are not wealthy. That's what Goldsmith has done.Zac Goldsmith MP, Richmond Park voted not to add proposed exclusions from a reduction in housing benefits due to being deemed to have excess bedrooms.

Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservative.

Looks like Ashcroft's going for Cameron's PR image of being happily married.
Mail headline today:
Samantha Cameron left furious over 'untrue smear against her marriage' to husband David in Lord Ashcroft's bombshell biography of the PM
Mrs Cameron says the book contains an old rumour about their marriage
It is due to be published on Monday in Lord Ashcroft's book Call Me Dave

We'll have to wait and see what the allegations are but interesting that Tory spin is presenting ever fragrant Sam as being put out about it.

I'm not happy the Tory conference is in Manchester.ohsocynical wrote:Goodness. Manchester is an exciting place to be this weekend. All sorts of protests converging on the Tory conference.
Wonder if it'll be on the main BBC news page? If it's anythng like the huge NHS rally last year, then no...
Manchester is a nice place.

I wish he'd change his mind, his party and make a clean break with that which isn't good for himself, others and the world.Tizme1 wrote:Thanks Ohso and JA. It would be nice to think so.
It can happen.

Samantha Cameron is an extraordinary looking woman, in my opinion.
Her beauty is fascinating to me though not conventional.
I know very little about her and don't wish to, particularly.
I'll not mention this topic here again.

I had to reduce it a bit to get it to fit.
Gave me a laugh though.

I don't share your awe of her 'beauty' JA.
To me all that doe eyed stuff is a put up job, as is the embarrassing gawping at her husband, treating him as if he had found a cure for cancer in kittens.

i'm convinced that the Tory decision to meet in Manchester is a bit of trolling, just because Labour have 96 out of 96 councillors there

No, it's just that they like a challenge (given their grasp of geography regarding anywhere north of Esher).
