Morning.
Am a little fragile after some champagne socialism for a friend's birthday last night, so please don't talk too loudly.

Speaking quietly was what Laura Kuenssberg did on Radio 4 this morning, when giving her view on the Tory conference. Gone was the shouty, sneering, partly comic delivery she uses for Labour reporting.
She spoke thoughtfully, calmly, reverentially as if she gave great import to the Tories and their issues, no doubt intended to make the listeners think the Tories deserve the dignity of a proper report.

Today show also mentioned a Tory 'crusade' in house building. Made it sound soooo positive.
I had to log onto FTN to find out that affordable homes schemes are to be squashed under Cameron's foot.

180 degree politics my husband calls it.
They do the opposite of what they say they are doing.
A less polite name would be 'We'll p**s down your neck, tell you it's raining and you should be bloody grateful to us for doing so' politics.

A BuzzFeed News investigation uncovers secret details of a “shady” deal between the offshore empire of a major Tory donor and the nephew of the former Sri Lankan president accused of corruption and war crimes.
What lovely company David Cameron keeps. How the Tories have the gall to moan about Labour being funded by ordinary citizens via the unions, given the dubious lowlife who donate to them is beyond me.

Good to see the Tory stewardship of the NHS is working out so well.

NHS leadership in crisis as running hospitals becomes near-impossible

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2015 ... impossible
“Our member chief executives tell us that they feel under greater pressure than ever before, particularly because there’s a huge, ongoing pressure in managing their financial deficit while continuing to provide the right quality of service”, says Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers. “It therefore seems no accident that we’ve had such a large number of chief execs retiring or resigning over the last 12 months. This is a very worrying trend. It means that just when the NHS needs leadership more than ever, because of the necessity of transforming how care is delivered, people are becoming increasingly reluctant to do these jobs. We can’t afford to lose experienced chief execs as we are currently doing.”
Still, I'm sure it's all the fault of the incompetent NHS and nothing to do with the government.

Amazing report here of people who walked 188 miles from Tredegar to Manchester, sleeping on church floors along the way.

Image

''Marianne’s grandfather Herbert Phillips, a miner from the Bedwelty Pits in Tredegar joined NHS founder Nye Bevan on a series of “hunger marches” in the 1920s.

In 1932, Herbert was among 375 Welsh marchers who joined the Jarrow Marchers and headed to London.

“My grandfather was my hero,” Marianne says. “When I was a child he used to tell me about the thunder of boots marching to the mines in the morning. He had a scar on his wrist lined with coal dust.”

Which is why Corbyn continuing to call for calm and rationality (as he did the other night) is so laudable. You don't have to agree with him on everything to see that.

Sooner or later it might occur to some dunderheads in the MSM that he - and the hope he has engendered amongst several who lose out in the present state of things - is one of the few things still standing against a potential social explosion, with unknowable consequences.

I don't know whether to be reassured by his willingness to talk to people whose views are so opposed to his own, and his acceptance that they may have something of a point, or annoyed at his utter failure to grasp the implications of his own privilege.
I found it annoying, as he effectively writes off anyone with a point as a misfit, part of a tiny minority, whilst accepting that maybe more could be done for them.
The people camping overnight are surely a minority of the protesters, people coming during the day might be taking a day off work and have money for transport, they have just as much right to an opinion.
These are the people for whom the Government’s reforms really might not be working, the exceptions who prove the rule maybe, but exceptions nevertheless.
I'd say the reforms aren't working for at least a quarter of the population, that's a hell of a lot of exceptions.

They're lying about this because they have to - evidence for academies being better because they're academies simply is not there.

Labour have responded:
We've just witnessed the most disgraceful name calling from David Cameron during his leader's speech. According to Cameron, Jeremy Corbyn has a "security-threatening, terrorist-sympathising, Britain-hating ideology". Personalised, playground style attacks.

You'll notice the similarity between the Prime Minister's words and those of the tabloid press, who have smeared Jeremy Corbyn throughout the summer and beyond. The motivations are the same: to drown out debate and make our arguments taboo.
Well, we have a message to David Cameron and the Tory Party: this is a renewed, strengthened and bigger Labour Party you're dealing with - and you've very much got a fight on your hands. But we won't fight it by personalised attacks, we'll fight it by widening the debate and involving people, across communities and in workplaces, to create a better society.

They are right - but they should be very, very assertive about attacking Cameron for his lies.

There was no attempt whatsoever that I can see to arrest him [bin Laden], to put him on trial, to go through that process.
This was an assassination attempt, and is yet another tragedy, upon a tragedy, upon a tragedy.
The World Trade Centre was a tragedy, the attack on Afghanistan was a tragedy, the war in Iraq was a tragedy. Tens of thousands of people have died. Torture has come back on to the world stage, been canonised virtually into law by Guantanamo and Bagram.
Can’t we learn some lessons over this?

He is just kicking the ball into an obligingly open goal, he doesn't do morality. The media should roast him for this bollocks but they won't.

Labour need to put Dan Jarvis up to rebut this. Plus get some headlines actually call David Cameron a lying sack of pig excrement on TV.

Jarvis is an actual soldier who has fought to defend this country, instead of a member of the CCF.

This is profoundly anti democratic and the behaviour of a third world dictator but with our media it will work.

Should we give this it's own thread so we don't forget it?
Over the next five years we will show that the deep problems in our society – they are not inevitable.

That a childhood in care doesn’t have to mean a life of struggle.

That a stint in prison doesn’t mean you’ll get out and do the same thing all over again.

That being black, or Asian, or female, or gay doesn’t mean you’ll be treated differently.

Nothing is written.

And if we’re to be the global success story of the 21st century, we need to write millions of individual success stories.

A Greater Britain – made of greater expectations…

…where renters become homeowners…

…employees become employers…

…a small island becomes an even bigger economy…

…and where extremism is defeated once and for all.

A Greater Britain…

…no more, its people dragged down or held back…

…no more, some children with their noses pressed to the window as they watch the world moving ahead without them.

No – a country raising its sights, its people reaching new heights…

…a Great British take-off – that leaves no-one behind.

That’s our dream – to help you realise your dreams.

A Greater Britain – made of greater hope, greater chances, greater security.

So let’s get out there – all of us – and let’s make it happen.
None of that is going to be realised but they'll win in 2020? :?

I think the rebuttal is rather weak as it stands. They should be addressing it far more aggressively and in principle not just complaining about personal attacks.

This is not going to be good for JC most people will just hear Cameron's words and believe him.

AS verdict, I can't argue with it.
he set out an attractive “one nation prospectus, ranging into areas like poverty, prison reform and racial discrimination that rarely feature so prominently in leader speeches at the Conservative conference. If Michael Heseltine had become Tory leader, he would have sounded like this.

Yet is any of it deliverable? It also sounded like a speech that Cameron may be anxious to forget by 2020. He called for more rehabilitation in prisons, but Chris Grayling pledged the same in the last parliament when he was justice secretary and the change he proposed never materialised. Cameron promised an “all-out assault on poverty”, saying that work was the best route out of poverty, but in-work poverty has been increasing, experts expect poverty on conventional measures to go up by the end of the decade and harsh tax credit cuts are about to come into force. He also deplored the lack of social mobility in the UK, and called for more equality. But on all these issues he had little or nothing to say about the policy levers he might pull to achieve his goals, and there is a danger that he is raising hopes he will not be able to fulfil.
My bold. That's the same issue as always with Cameron & Osborne.

He is a convincing liar it is true but a liar he is. Being a good liar does not make you suitable for an office of state

If you are prepared to lie and there is no one calling you out on it then you will probably gain. The Labour Party can call him that but people will say it is just political opponents

The problem is the media are mainly made up of either friends, acquaintances or liars as well

There are very few journalists prepared to ask difficult questions and they do not work for the BBC or mass market newspapers where most people seem to get their info from

One day people will realise it is just on great big con trick but by then it is all too late

If only they had paid a little bit more interest......perhaps Dom Littlewood will have a show called 'Britain's Greatest Twats' in 10 years time

Good to see our PM acting true to form.
Why would a leopard ever change its spots ?

Lying, cheating, misrepresenting, harming people and telling them it's for their own good is their only game.
The Tories get ever more extreme and the media chunter on about them occupying the middle ground, as if were all just an amusing game.
