At the same time the BBC set up an independent review into their current Child protection and whistleblowing policies (this is what was taken away from the Smith Review) and this independent report is already in, whilst the Smith Review has yet to finish and will still put forward its own recommendations.

This is what I meant yesterday. Infighting and feeding an anti-Labour media.

I've always thought Livingstone to be a loose cannon, no great fan of him, but Jones seems to be fanning the flames.

I think Kevan Jones claimed that Ken Livingstone's appointment as co-chair would damage Labour's credibility. I don't know what else, if anything, he said on the subject, though. Must have been more, surely, to elicit any response at all - let alone the one he got? I'll have a look around.

He inferred that Livingstone didn't know anything about defence, which was wrong.

He didn't know something that he should have known, which is also true of Ken. Pity they can't just stop shouting their mouths off.

I wonder if Babies Against the Bomb will be making a return under the Trident review
Under Livingstone, the GLC pursued a variety of radical socialist measures: sponsoring an "Antiracist Year," providing city grants to such groups as "Babies Against the Bomb," and declaring London a "nuclear-free zone."

I presume he means people with mental health issues.

Well, as someone who has suffered bouts of anxiety, depression and lives with OCD I do not need Livingstone to apologise to me.

What I would like is for the party to stop feeding the media negative Labour headlines.
That would do my state of mind a lot of good.

When I said about resigning membership yesterday Anatoly seemed to think it was because I see Corbyn as some sort of saviour.

I don't, it is about more than him and I only voted for him because there was no one amongst the other three candidates that seemed appealing.
If there'd be a strong 'moderate' with no baggage and strong electoral appeal I'd have voted for them.

The self-destructiveness of some in the party makes it feel like walking away would be sensible, if only to protect my own mental health.

Worse because of the weather, can't get out and walk it off. Even the hilltops are soaked and squelchy. My husband slipped yesterday and nearly smacked his face on a protruding tree root.

Well, there was a bit of LibDem good news yesterday when that slimeball Rennard was forced out :)

I'm not too disheartened about Syria, either. If the government does get backing for some sort of military response, it will only be after condceding almost everything that Labour and their own backbench critics have asked for. The cabinet minister quoted earlier is just indulging in bravado to their captive media to conceal that fact ;)

Hi everyone.
Have been lurking at times, but pretty depressing reading when I drop in.These are dark days indeed, weather, political and global, financial, personal and worldwide too.
So,what to do?
Hey,it's nearly Christmas,Hannukah etc.All festivals of light and hope to shine through the dark days and nights ahead.
Get cooking those cakes and pies, fill the house with delicious smells.Light the fires and candles, write some cards.Buy some gifts(tk maxx sells some terrific scented candles online which make the same brand on ebay look expensive),make presents if you're skint.Take the dogs out and get cold and blown around,or husband if you have no dogs, come home, warm up,read a lovely book.
Glass of wine.French.
Think about the bravery of Paris, and the love sent there from around the world.

Things will get better eventually.

It's the gung ho, almost gleeful sounding, proclamation 'we're going to war' that sticks in my craw. Utterly chilling. I accept I'm probably unwelcome here nowadays but I'm truly shocked at the ease with which, collectively, you are refusing to acknowledge the depths Ken Livingstone has sunk to with his insulting remarks.

What would your reaction have been if it had been a Tory MP who had said it ?

How would you have responded if it had been aimed at somebody you know ?

What would your reaction have been if it had been directed at you ?

He's an utter disgrace but so too are those who refuse to demand he is removed from his position. You would have been demanding Cameron sack any Tory cabinet member, no matter how junior a position they held in that cabinet, yet because Ken has apparently apologised to Kevan Jones we should all just accept it & move on ?

Disgusting !

Hello PK - you are certainly welcome here in my book.

Sad you feel that we've collectively failed to register criticism of Livingstone's behaviour loudly enough. I have no hesitation in saying it was disgusting and he should never, ever have said it. But I think people here have condemned him ... so don't quite see it as you do.

If it does happen it will be no comfort at all to think that I've had conversations in which everyone agreed that if things looked dodgy for Dave he would find a way to go to war, just like Thatcher did, amidst the jingoism of that time it. felt like hope died for the duration, and I don't really want a return to that. It just felt as if it was coming, by the Cenotaph this year, I am praying that it will not happen, our intervention will only make things worse. We are already there to some degree, I don't see the need, except that of course there will be money to make and the markets already show how the warmongers are rubbing their hands at the prospect.

Outrage isn't that good for mental health. So sometimes resisting the urge to feel disgusted is a good place to start, that's what I'm trying to do.

Even if it was a Tory who said it, what good does it do me to go ballistic ?
None, bad for my mental and physical health even if it allows for a few moments of my self-righteousness.

I'm not defending Livingstone, to me he is as much part of Labour's problems as people like Danzcuk. It's a wider thing. Since the onset of social media outrage and disgust have lost their real currency because there's always a new thing to irk coming along at the next key stroke.

I baked yesterday to take my mind off things, and because we repay the two friends who kindly take Mr Ohso and myself to the hospital and pick him up when he's had treatment with a cake each, as they won't take money for the petrol...

So two lemon drizzles are for them, but I have chocolate cake, pork pies and sausage rolls made with my own flaky pastry. Oh and there are a few cheesy bites made from a small bit of left over flaky pastry and vintage cheddar. Those were an experiment and are fantastic.

What would you like?

PS bashing a large lump of frozen butter flat with a rolling pin is very therapuetic.

Actually there are people in government who have done a thousandfold worse and more and nothing will dislodge them at all. KL behaved very badly, that will stick, it is a punishment in itself, he is a loose canon, and it is likely he won't stay in place. Yes it was bad, and offensive and stupid, but doesn't remotely compare to the likes of bad things set in place by the likes of Freud, Grayling, IDS, Gove, and the frontbench crew that Cameron and Osbourne assembled. They may have manners when it suits them, but by all the gods I don't believe in, including them, their actions make Livingstones crude words seem featherlight in comparison. That is the state we are in. What insults those two men exchanged is really not that important, that they put themselves above opposing this fascist government is. And yes, Ken should apologise also to any offence he may have caused to people with mental health issues.

Sky Broadband customers to receive letters demanding cash for downloaded porn films
The letters are thought to be an example of ‘speculative invoicing’, where companies send demands for money in the hope people will be scared into paying

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style ... 38956.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
That headline could almost make you think it was Sky itself doing this to its customers - no? It's not - it's yet another scam from the ever resourceful criminal gangs.

But this has been going on for a long time. I remember receiving some quite threatening emails where I used to work demanding payment for adult films - billed / emailed to the company name. Trouble was I had reason at the time to think there might just have been a possibility someone had bought said stuff ... thankfully they hadn't.

Amazing what people can get away with though. A previous workplace were stunned to receive a phone bill for thousands of pounds and find out that one of their volunteer receptionists was gaily using premium rate sex chat lines whilst answering and directing all the incoming calls. Some switchboard technique eh.

Why on earth is a Trident review being announced today anyway?

Ken Livingstone was an excellent London Mayor, but he's divisive. An opponent and a supporter of Trident is sensible, but there must have been other people available. For a start, there were 94 Labour MPs who voted in 2007 for "Trident case not proven".

It's not a left/right thing particularly with Corbyn's appointments. Katy Clark is well to the left and nobody much has complained about her. Andrew Fisher is over promoted but not a bad appointment to a Corbyn team, even with his unfortunate tweets. But Seumas Milne and Ken Livingstone are poor.

McDonnell, the muck up where Osborne caught him out notwithstanding, has done much better than Corbyn.

I want Corbyn to do well, for all sorts of reasons. But he has to improve.

Oh come on PK. I presume it was aimed at me, so maybe OhSo's not that far off the mark.

It's just interesting that we haven't heard from you, despite people, including myself, asking after you and hoping you'd pop in.

But it's like when you haven't seen someone for yonks, they turn up at the door and shout 'Disgusting' at you and just have a go.
You wonder why they couldn't be arsed to respond when you've asked how they were, or invited them in for a cuppa previously yet seem to be ready to go ballistic when they've peeked through the letterbox and seen something they don't like.

If you want to go in umbrage, then no one can stop you.
But it seems as if you came in wanting a response. Isn't it called 'flaming' ?

Isn't the thing about Livingstone that he is on the NEC? A front bencher and NEC member is usually how these committees are chaired IIRC.

And this was always going to have one co-chair on each "side" due to its sensitivity. Not sure what alternatives there were to Ken in that case......

JC isn't responsible for him behaving like a pillock, and demanded he apologise almost immediately which is all he could really do.

Agree that Milne doesn't seem the most inspired appointment (though I still suspect others were approached first) I thought that at least he knew how the media works and so could advise Jez on how best to cope with their inevitable bear traps - not so much sign of that on Monday, though?

As is Abbott imo, it's only been two months & the right wing press are having it gifted to them on a plate.

Just noticed - while idly looking out the bathroom window as you do - that our rotary clothes dryer seems to have gone. It's just not there. I wonder if it was picked up by Storm Barney and has sailed away into or over the woods. Watch out Emlyn, it's coming your way.

Abbott is one of those (there are always a few) promoted on the basis of loyalty rather than ability.

Though she also somehow managed to keep a job under Ed for ages despite putting her foot in it with depressing regularity.

Hard not to see a degree of tokenism at least partly explaining her charmed life, tbh.

Thanks for the procedural info - would make sense.

I would just like them all - whoever they are, whoever they follow or don't follow - to calm down. It feels to a relative outsider as though there is some kind of collective frenzy going on ... it just needs to be steady, sensible preparation and allowing themselves the time to get things done in the right way.

I also have to keep reminding myself that it's just over 2 months - 2 months for pete's sake - that Corbyn was elected leader.
