I note with barely restrained joy that Dominic Sandbrook has yet another documentary on the BBC. Guess what the theme is? Capitalism is great and is responsible for everything good about Britain, and Britain is considerably better than yowr country to boot. This time his one trick is applied to post-war British popular culture.

And some people STILL think the BBC is left-wing.

Do look it up on Twitter.

I posted the poll results because I was struck by the love him/loathe him effect Corbyn seems to be having. I really didn't mean to upset anyone. I think Corbyn and McDonnell could help Labour formulate some strong, distinctive left of centre policies and identity. I just have some doubts about their ability to sell Labour to the wider electorate, especially older voters. Although they aren't particularly radically left wing, they are seen as rebels, outsiders, and I don't think that goes down so well with older voters, which RobertSnozers identifies as becoming more right wing, whereas I would say becoming more small 'c' conservative, as they get older. As such I wonder whether, on a purely presentational level ( I don't know much about his politics), if an "establishment" type figure like Dan Jarvis might prove more successful. He could be worth the wait, if time with his children is the only thing stopping him standing, but can Corbyn hold out a couple of years?

Edited on account of slow typing to add :smack: as I see Jarvis was already mentioned several comments ago.

We accept that Russian bombs can provoke a terror backlash. Ours can too
Mehdi Hasan
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre ... id-cameron" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
UK’s Stop the War coalition removed from its website a piece that blamed the rise of Islamic State (Isis) and the Paris attacks on “deliberate policies and actions undertaken by the United States and its allies”. The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, scrapped a speech in which he was due to say that Britain’s “disastrous wars” have “increased, not diminished, the threats to our own national security”. Such arguments are verboten in our public discourse.

Isn’t it odd, then, that in the case of Russia, western governments have been keen to link Vladimir Putin’s – and only Vladimir Putin’s – foreign policy to terrorist violence? On 1 October the US government and its allies issued a joint statement declaring that the Russian president’s decision to intervene in Syria would “only fuel more extremism and radicalisation”. Yes, you heard them: it’ll “fuel” it.
Let me be clear: to explain is not to excuse; explication is not justification. There is no grievance on earth that can justify the wanton slaughter of innocent men, women and children, in France or anywhere else.

The savagery of Isis is perhaps without parallel in the modern era. But the point is that it did not emerge from nowhere: as the US president himself has conceded, Isis “grew out of our invasion” of Iraq.

Yet we avert our gaze from the “glaringly evident” and pretend that “they” – the Russians, the Iranians, the Chinese – are attacked for their policies while “we” – Europe, the west, the liberal democracies – are attacked only for our principles. This is the simplistic fantasy, the geopolitical fairytale, that we tell ourselves. It gives us solace and strength in the wake of terrorist atrocities. But it does nothing to stop the next attack.

@Tubby - this is quite informative. It seems there may be quite a few senior Conservative figures who haven't acted as they should according to the complainants. Just seen a trailer clip with the MP for Bath saying the Tories sat on this because they didn't want it to come out and lose them the election ...

Meanwhile, in a universe pretty close to ours - oh, hold on, it is ours - this happens:
Prime Minister David Cameron and senior ministers are to get their own plane for official trips.
An RAF Voyager A330 air-to-air refuelling aircraft will be refitted at a cost of about £10m.

... it will also be available to the Royal Family.
