Is there a problem with the sound in the BBC's coverage of the Labour Party Conference? It only ever sounds as if one or two people are applauding. It makes it sound a lack-lustre affair. Or is this common to all of their conference coverage? I can't rightly remember (other than to say that I do remember that it was the same for the last Labour Party Conference).

BBC Parliament has flipped to covering the Scottish Parliament. So I assume Ed Miliband's speech is to be broadcast on BBC News24 (which means there's no escape from Andrew Neil). I'm confused.

BBC2, but still no escape from Andrew Neil I'm afraid.
He hasn't been as bad as Jo Coburn so far.

Did any FTNers take up the Labour email asking for their pics to put up behind Ed today ?

Before the details were made clear in Miliband’s speech, shares in British American Tobacco and Imperial Tobacco were down by around 1.5%, underperforming the rest of the market.

If I recall correctly, the same happened last year with the energy companies - didn't affect them for long & certainly hasn't put any of them out of business.

UK public finances show no improvement

The latest UK public finances are out, and they show that Britain borrowed more last month than in August 2013, despite the strong growth over the last year.

VAT receipts increased by £0.3 billion, or 3.2% to £10.2 billion
income tax related payments increased by £0.3 billion, or 2.4% to £11.3 billion
stamp duties (on shares, land & property) increased by £0.2 billion, or 24.1% to £1.3 billion
corporation tax increased by £0.2 billion, or 17.2% to £1.5 billion

I get the feeling the nay-sayers don't think so, which I find appalling. If we can't rescue our health service, the lower and middle classes are going to be forking out appalling sums for decent health care if not going bankrupt. The slightly younger generation have been spoilt when it comes to their free healthcare. Some of them really have no idea. I daresay when it comes to polling day they'll vote for Labour, but the negative and snide comments aren't doing much to get the don't-knowers on board.

A few pennies extra on taxes or even dare I say it capped family allowance for a bit is less than peanuts if we don't get the Tories out. We've all spoken about the huge sums the Tories have wasted, but the public don't really know about it because of the lies. There will be some huge black holes of debt in many of the departments.

I can't be bothered to read the Michael White article which you mention above. But that doesn't stop me from wondering who Michael White considers to be the "big beasts". I'd take a guess that he means super-annuated "Blairites", though.

Michael White is an irrelevance, has been for years. All this internet here was fields the last time he wrote something worth reading.

Watching Ed talking without a script to a massive room filled with people & finding it hard to reconcile the person I'm watching with the common perception of him being awkward, inept & unable to lead a country.

What he's doing takes balls far bigger than any of his detractors possess.

I picture them hunched over a table in a cafe or over their desks, sniggering because they're being clever and upsetting the regulars...They probably won't even lift their sorry asses off a chair and vote.

If it didn't mean the innocent would suffer I'd say serves em right when they are on the phone arguing with the insurance company because they can't afford test strips for their diabetes or have a handicapped child and have to hold a fund raising event in the neighbourhood in order to get a correct diagnoses and assessment. Or getting in a drunken rage in A&E because they don't think they should pay for their self inflicted injuries. And chances are they're well educated if not well brought up.
I can't see working class kids bothering to waste their time trolling...I think they'd feel it's a bit childish.

I thought it was brave how he defended both the Union and the EU from an internationalist standpoint. He more or less explicitly told Murdoch and the rest to bugger off and I admire him for it.
